Chapter 5 - THE DEAD MAN AT THE GATENo one spoke.

Claire stood frozen behind Marcus.
Her father's face appeared beyond the glass doors.
Gray hair.
Tall frame.
Black cane.
The exact posture she remembered from childhood.
Lily whispered:
“Grandpa?”
Claire grabbed her daughter.
“Stay behind me.”
Officer Davis moved toward the entrance.
“Everyone stay where you are.”
Julian smiled.
“You wanted the truth.”
Marcus glared at him.
“What did you do?”
Julian said nothing.
The front door opened.
The old man walked inside.
Claire's legs nearly gave out.
“Dad?”
The man looked at her.
“Claire.”
Her breath caught.
He had the same voice.
The same eyes.
But there was something colder about him.
Officer Davis raised his weapon.
“Stop right there.”
The man stopped.
“My name is Victor Vale.”
Claire whispered:
“That is my father's name.”
Victor smiled.
“Because I am your father.”
Davis looked toward Marcus.
“Stay back.”
Claire shook her head.
“My father died.”
Victor replied calmly:
“The man buried under that name did.”
Claire frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Victor slowly removed his glove.
“Your mother never knew the difference.”
Emily stepped forward.
“You abandoned us.”
Victor looked at her.
“No.”
“You let Claire believe I was dead.”
“I protected the family.”
“You destroyed it.”
Victor's expression hardened.
“I built it.”
Julian stepped closer.
“Victor, we need to leave.”
Victor looked at him.
“No.”
Julian froze.
“What?”
“You made a mistake.”
Claire suddenly understood.
Julian wasn't Victor's partner anymore.
He was expendable.
Victor looked toward the basement.
“Where is the ledger?”
Officer Davis intervened.
“You're not taking anything.”
Victor smiled.
“You don't understand what you're holding.”
Davis said, “Then explain.”
Victor looked at Claire.
“Your family's fortune was never yours.”
Claire stiffened.
“What?”
“Your father built the trust through shell companies. The trust was designed to move money between countries without triggering certain investigations.”
Davis said, “That's financial fraud.”
Victor nodded.
“Perhaps.”
He seemed almost amused.
“But the money is only one part.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“What is the other part?”
Victor looked directly at him.
“People.”
Silence.
Marcus frowned.
Victor continued.
“Politicians.”
“Lawyers.”
“Bankers.”
“Judges.”
“All of them paid.”
Claire felt sick.
“You used our family to buy people?”
Victor shook his head.
“I used our family to control them.”
Officer Davis signaled his team.
“Arrest him.”
The officers moved.
Then every light in the house went out.
Darkness swallowed the hallway.
Lily screamed.
A gunshot exploded upstairs.
Everyone ducked.
Marcus reached for Claire.
“Get Lily down!”
Officer Davis shouted commands.
Another gunshot.
Glass shattered.
When the emergency lights came on, Victor was gone.
Julian was gone too.
Claire looked toward the front door.
Marcus shouted:
“They escaped!”
Davis ran outside.
The black SUV was already disappearing down the road.
But something remained behind.
A small black suitcase.
Marcus opened it.
Inside was a single hard drive.
No documents.
No money.
Just one label:
CLAIRE VALE.
She stared at it.
“What is that?”
Marcus plugged it into the recovered laptop.
A folder appeared.
Inside were videos.
Hundreds of them.
Claire opened the first.
It showed her sleeping.
The second showed Lily at school.
The third showed Marcus leaving his apartment.
Claire whispered:
“They've been watching us.”
Marcus opened another.
The date was yesterday.
The video showed Claire standing in her kitchen.
But she was alone.
A voice from behind the camera said:
“Tomorrow, Marcus will come for you.”
Claire went cold.
The video continued.
“Let him.”
Then Victor's voice said:
“He'll lead us to the final account.”
Marcus slowly looked at Claire.
“What final account?”
Claire shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Then another video opened automatically.
It showed Emily.
Sitting in the hidden room.
Before she escaped.
Emily looked directly into the camera.
She whispered:
“If you're watching this, it means Victor has already found the last key.”
The screen went black.
May you like
Then one word appeared.
NINETEEN.
