Chapter 1 - THE HEAVY PADLOCK“Who put this heavy padlock on the basement door?”

Marcus stared at the thick black lock hanging from a chain that looked strong enough to restrain a warehouse gate.
The question seemed to freeze the entire hallway.
Julian stood three steps away, one hand inside his coat pocket.
“Claire wanted extra security for her personal items.”
Marcus slowly turned toward him.
“Her personal items?”
“That’s what I said.”
Julian’s voice was calm, almost bored.
That calmness made Marcus angrier.
The house had always been open. The basement door had never needed more than an ordinary brass latch. Marcus had known this family for years. He had watched Claire raise Lily there. He had attended birthdays, Christmas dinners, and quiet Sunday mornings.
There had never been a chain.
Never a padlock.
And certainly never a reason for Claire to lock herself out of her own basement.
Before Marcus could answer, Lily appeared at the top of the stairs.
Her face was pale.
“Mommy is inside that room right now!”
Marcus looked at her.
“What?”
Lily pointed at the basement door.
“Mommy is inside.”
Julian's expression changed.
Only for a second.
But Marcus saw it.
“You lying snake,” Marcus said. “You locked her in there!”
Julian stepped forward.
“Get your hands off me right now!”
Marcus grabbed the front of Julian's shirt.
“Then open the door.”
Julian pushed him away.
“You are not touching my property.”
“This is Claire's home too.”
“You don't know what you're talking about.”
Lily began crying.
“She screamed.”
Marcus immediately turned toward her.
“When?”
“Last night.”
Julian's face hardened.
“Children imagine things.”
Lily shook her head.
“No.”
Marcus looked back at Julian.
“What did you do to her?”
Julian gave a humorless smile.
“You're making a scene over a locked door.”
Sirens sounded outside.
Julian's smile disappeared.
Two police vehicles stopped near the house.
Officer Davis stepped out with another officer behind him.
Marcus moved toward the front door.
“Cut that heavy chain right now, officer!”
Davis held up a document.
“Stand back. We have a search warrant.”
Julian stared at the paper.
“You have no right to break my personal lock!”
Officer Davis looked at the basement.
“The warrant covers the residence and any secured area relevant to the investigation.”
Julian took a step forward.
“This is harassment.”
Davis ignored him.
“Step away from the door.”
A bolt cutter appeared.
Julian suddenly lunged toward the chain.
Marcus blocked him.
Julian's eyes burned.
“You don't understand what you're doing.”
Marcus stared directly into his face.
“Watch me break every single lie you built here today.”
The chain snapped.
The sound echoed through the house.
Everyone went silent.
Officer Davis opened the basement door.
Cold air spilled upstairs.
“Claire?” Marcus shouted.
No answer.
“Claire!”
Then, from somewhere below, came a weak voice.
“Marcus?”
His heart stopped.
He ran down the stairs.
“Claire!”
She was sitting on the concrete floor with one wrist tied to a pipe.
Her face was bruised.
Her hair was tangled.
And there was dried blood near her temple.
Marcus dropped to his knees.
“Oh my God.”
Claire looked at him through swollen eyes.
“Marcus…”
“You're safe now.”
She began to cry.
“No.”
Marcus frowned.
“What?”
Claire looked toward the darkest corner of the basement.
“You shouldn't have opened the door.”
Officer Davis crouched beside her.
“Why?”
Claire's lips trembled.
“Because Julian didn't lock me in here to hide me.”
She pointed toward the wall.
“He locked something else in here.”
Marcus turned.
At first, he saw nothing.
Then a tiny red light blinked in the darkness.
A security camera.
And beside it was a second light.
Green.
Recording.
Claire whispered:
“Everything Julian said tonight… is being recorded.”
Marcus looked at Julian.
Julian was no longer smiling.
Then the camera rotated toward them.
And a hidden speaker crackled to life.
Julian's own voice filled the basement.
“Once Claire tells them where the money is, she doesn't leave this house alive.”
Silence.
Julian's face went white.
May you like
And Lily screamed.
“That's Daddy's voice.”
