Chapter 14 - THE NIGHT THE TRUTH BURNEDEverything happened at once.

Gunfire.

Shouting.

Broken glass.

Davis returned fire while Marcus pulled Claire and Lily behind a concrete wall.

Nathan dragged Mara into another room.

Julian disappeared through a side door.

Claire looked around.

“Where's Julian?”

Marcus shouted:

“Don't worry about him!”

But Claire knew better.

He had disappeared exactly when things became dangerous.

Again.

Then the fire alarm sounded.

Smoke filled the corridor.

Someone had started the fire.

Davis shouted:

“Get out!”

Claire grabbed Lily.

Marcus took Emily's hand.

Mara remained behind.

Claire stopped.

“Mom!”

Mara looked at her.

“Go.”

“I won't leave you.”

Mara smiled.

“I left you once.”

She looked toward the flames.

“I won't do it again.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

Mara pushed her toward the exit.

“Take Lily.”

The ceiling groaned.

Marcus grabbed Claire.

They ran.

Behind them, Mara disappeared into smoke.

Outside, the clinic burned.

Victor stood beside the vehicles.

He watched the building like a man attending a funeral.

Then he looked at Claire.

“You have no idea what you've inherited.”

Claire stepped forward.

“Everything you stole.”

Victor smiled.

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Your family's sins.”

He raised a phone.

A video appeared.

Mara.

Alive.

Bound to a chair.

Claire froze.

“You didn't kill her.”

Victor smiled.

“I never intended to.”

He looked toward Lily.

“I need the child.”

Marcus stepped in front of her.

Victor's men raised weapons.

Victor said:

“One step and she dies.”

Davis aimed his weapon.

Victor laughed.

“You think you can arrest me?”

He nodded toward the burning clinic.

“There are no witnesses.”

Then Julian appeared.

He walked out of the flames.

Everyone stared.

His face was bleeding.

In his hand was a small device.

Victor's smile disappeared.

“Where did you get that?”

Julian answered:

“From the room under the room.”

Claire stared.

“What?”

Julian looked at her.

“The final archive.”

He held up the device.

“It contains everything.”

Victor's face changed.

Julian pressed a button.

Screens around the property activated.

Every confession.

Every payment.

Every disappearance.

Every recording.

Every name.

Victor stared at the broadcasts.

People around the world were watching.

Banks.

Newsrooms.

Police departments.

Government agencies.

The truth had gone public.

Julian looked at Claire.

“I was wrong.”

Claire said nothing.

“I thought protecting Victor would protect me.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“You sold your soul for nothing.”

Julian nodded.

“I know.”

Victor screamed:

“Kill him!”

His men raised their weapons.

Police sirens suddenly filled the road.

Dozens of officers surrounded the property.

Davis smiled faintly.

“You should have checked your phones.”

The archive had already transmitted everything.

Victor stared at Claire.

“You think you've won.”

Claire looked at him.

“I don't need to win.”

She pointed toward Lily.

“I just need my daughter alive.”

Victor's men dropped their weapons.

Victor was arrested.

Julian surrendered.

The fire was extinguished.

And for the first time in decades, the Vale family's secrets belonged to the public.

But one mystery remained.

Mara.

Claire searched the burned clinic.

Nothing.

No body.

No blood.

No sign.

Then, beneath a collapsed wall, Marcus found a silver pendant.

The same kind Mara always wore.

Claire opened it.

Inside was a small piece of paper.

Five words.

FIND ME BEFORE NATHAN.

Claire looked at her father.

Nathan had gone pale.

“Why?”

He didn't answer.

Marcus turned toward him.

“Nathan?”

Nathan whispered:

“She knows what I did.”

Claire's heart sank.

“What did you do?”

Nathan looked toward the burning building.

May you like

“I started all of this.”

Then he walked away.
