Chapter 13 - THE MAN BEHIND MARCUSThe lights returned.

Nathan stood in the doorway.
Everyone froze.
Claire stared.
“How?”
Nathan looked at her.
“I escaped.”
Davis raised his weapon.
“Hands where I can see them.”
Nathan obeyed.
Marcus stared at him.
“You know me.”
Nathan nodded.
“You don't remember.”
Marcus shook his head.
“Remember what?”
Mara answered.
“You were one of the children.”
Marcus looked confused.
“What children?”
“The children used as witnesses.”
Claire's eyes widened.
“What?”
Mara continued.
“Victor needed people who could carry information without understanding what they had seen.”
Marcus laughed nervously.
“You're saying I was a witness as a child?”
“Yes.”
Nathan looked at him.
“You saw the first transfer.”
Marcus stared.
“What transfer?”
“The night Claire was born.”
Silence.
Claire turned toward him.
“You were there?”
Marcus shook his head.
“I don't remember.”
Nathan said:
“They erased your memory.”
Julian slowly stepped forward.
“How?”
“Drugs.”
Marcus looked sick.
Davis asked:
“Who authorized it?”
Nathan answered:
“Victor.”
Marcus stared at the old man.
“Why me?”
“Because you were Nathan's son.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
Nathan nodded.
“Marcus is my son.”
The room seemed to tilt.
Marcus stared at him.
“No.”
Nathan continued:
“Your mother believed you were safer with another family.”
Marcus stepped back.
“You're lying.”
Mara shook her head.
“No.”
She showed him a birth certificate.
Nathan Cross.
Father.
Unknown mother.
Marcus Reed.
Child.
Claire looked at Marcus.
They had known each other for years.
But she had never known they were family.
Nathan pointed toward the red folder.
“There is one more truth.”
“What?”
“Claire's mother and I had a plan.”
Mara looked down.
“We planned to expose the trust.”
Nathan said:
“But Victor found out.”
“So you disappeared.”
“Yes.”
Marcus asked:
“Then why did Victor leave Claire alive?”
Nathan answered:
“Because Claire inherited the one thing he couldn't steal.”
Claire looked at the folder.
“What?”
“Proof.”
Mara opened it.
Inside was an old cassette tape.
No digital file.
No backup.
One original recording.
Recorded decades ago.
Mara inserted it into an old player.
Victor's younger voice filled the room.
“We need the child.”
A second voice.
Nathan.
“No.”
Victor:
“If Claire is born, she becomes the beneficiary.”
Nathan:
“Then destroy the agreement.”
Victor:
“I'd rather control the child.”
Mara covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
Victor said:
“Once the girl turns twenty-one, the trust activates automatically.”
Claire's eyes widened.
She whispered:
“That was yesterday.”
Everyone turned toward her.
Julian suddenly stepped back.
“What?”
Claire looked at him.
“My birthday was yesterday.”
Mara closed her eyes.
“The trust just activated.”
A notification appeared on the laptop.
FINAL BENEFICIARY CONFIRMED.
Then another message.
TRANSFER COMPLETE.
Claire stared.
“What transferred?”
Nathan whispered:
“Everything.”
“All the money?”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“The ownership.”
Claire's phone began vibrating.
One notification.
Then another.
Then dozens.
Bank.
Property.
Companies.
Offshore accounts.
Trust holdings.
Everything was now in Claire's name.
She had become the legal owner of the entire network.
Victor had spent twenty years trying to control the trust.
But now it belonged to Claire.
Mara looked terrified.
“That's not the worst part.”
Claire turned.
“What?”
Mara pointed toward Lily.
“The trust doesn't end with you.”
She swallowed.
“It passes to Lily if you die.”
Claire froze.
Then the doors exploded inward.
Victor's men stormed the clinic.
And behind them stood Victor.
May you like
He smiled.
“My granddaughter.”
