Chapter 12 - THE BLUE DOORThe door opened.

A woman stepped through.
Mara Vale.
Claire stared at her mother.
Older.
Elegant.
Calm.
Alive.
Emily stood beside Claire.
“You let us believe you were dead.”
Mara looked at her.
“You were safer that way.”
“Safer from what?”
“From Victor.”
Claire stepped forward.
“You used us.”
Mara looked directly at her.
“I protected you.”
“You imprisoned Emily.”
“I hid her.”
“You watched my daughter.”
“I watched over her.”
Claire's voice cracked.
“You lied.”
Mara's eyes softened.
“I lied because the truth would have killed you.”
Marcus stepped between them.
“Then start telling the truth.”
Mara looked at him.
“You are Marcus Reed.”
He froze.
“You know me.”
“I know everything about you.”
Davis raised his weapon.
“You're under arrest.”
Mara smiled.
“Not yet.”
She pressed a button.
The doors locked.
Alarm shutters dropped.
The room sealed.
Davis tried the handle.
“Open this.”
Mara ignored him.
She looked at Claire.
“Your father made one mistake.”
“Which one?”
“He trusted Victor.”
Claire frowned.
Mara continued.
“Victor became obsessed with controlling the trust. Nathan wanted to expose him. I wanted to protect my daughters.”
Emily interrupted.
“You left me.”
“I saved you.”
“You let me disappear.”
Mara's expression cracked.
“I watched you every day.”
Emily stepped closer.
“Then why didn't you come?”
Mara didn't answer.
Claire stared.
Because the answer was worse than she expected.
Mara finally said:
“Because every person who tried to rescue you died.”
Silence.
She named them.
Lawyers.
Investigators.
A judge.
Two police officers.
A banker.
Every time someone approached the truth, they disappeared.
Marcus looked at Davis.
“This is bigger than the family.”
Mara nodded.
“Much bigger.”
She opened a hidden compartment.
Inside was a second red folder.
“This contains everything.”
Claire took it.
“Why give it to me now?”
“Because I no longer have time.”
“What does that mean?”
Mara looked toward Lily.
“They found the final location.”
A sound echoed outside.
Vehicles.
Many of them.
Mara's face changed.
“They're here.”
Davis looked out a window.
Multiple black SUVs surrounded the clinic.
Marcus said:
“Victor.”
Mara shook her head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
Mara looked at Claire.
“The people Victor was afraid of.”
She opened the folder.
The first page contained a list of names.
At the bottom was one marked in red.
MARCUS REED.
Marcus froze.
“What?”
Claire looked at him.
Mara said quietly:
“He has been part of this since before you met Julian.”
Marcus stepped back.
“No.”
Mara pointed to another document.
A photograph of a young Marcus standing beside Nathan.
The date was nineteen years earlier.
Marcus stared.
“I don't remember this.”
Mara whispered:
“Because they erased your memory of it.”
Claire looked at Marcus.
“Why would you be involved?”
Marcus's face turned pale.
“I wasn't.”
Mara shook her head.
“You were.”
Then the lights went out.
A gunshot exploded.
Glass shattered.
Mara pushed Lily to the floor.
Marcus grabbed Claire.
Davis fired toward the window.
And in the darkness, someone whispered:
“Marcus.”
He turned.
A voice only he could recognize.
May you like
Nathan.
But Nathan was supposed to be miles away.
