Chapter 9 - The Brother No One MentionedThe Hamilton Family Had Erased a Man From History

Adam had no brother.

That was what everyone believed.

But Elias had documents proving otherwise.

A birth certificate.

Two children.

Adam Hamilton.

Adrian Hamilton.

Twin brothers.

Adrian had disappeared when he was nineteen.

Margaret had declared him dead.

No funeral had been held.

No body recovered.

No explanation given.

Daniel found photographs from an old family album.

Two boys stood beside their mother.

They were nearly impossible to distinguish.

Clara stared.

"This is him."

Elias nodded.

"Adrian."

"Where is he?"

"No one knows."

Then Rachel spoke.

"I know."

Everyone looked at her.

Rachel lowered her eyes.

"Adrian never disappeared."

She explained.

Adrian had been blamed for stealing money from the family company.

Margaret had used the accusation to force him out.

But Adrian had not stolen anything.

He had discovered Margaret's financial crimes.

He threatened to expose her.

She destroyed his reputation.

Then she told everyone he had fled.

Rachel had later discovered Adrian was alive.

But before she could contact him, Margaret threatened Idan.

So Rachel disappeared instead.

Clara asked:

"Why would Adrian help Margaret?"

"He wouldn't."

Elias looked toward the hallway.

"Someone has been using Adrian's identity."

Daniel's face changed.

"The man in the photographs."

Elias nodded.

"A fake Adrian."

Clara remembered the hidden room.

Someone had dressed as Adam.

Someone had moved through the mansion at night.

Someone had manipulated security footage.

And now someone had kidnapped Idan.

They returned to the courthouse.

There, a police officer delivered devastating news.

The Hamilton trust had been emptied.

Every dollar.

Thirty million.

Gone.

Daniel examined the transaction.

"Someone used Adam's digital signature."

Adam stared at the screen.

"I never signed this."

Elias shook his head.

"That means they copied your identity."

Clara thought about Margaret's secret room.

"The box."

"What box?"

"The one Idan told me about."

She remembered the brass key.

It was gone.

Unless they had another.

Daniel suddenly stood.

"Wait."

He opened the photo of the hidden room.

There was a small safe beneath the desk.

"What if the box contains the digital authorization key?"

They returned to the mansion.

Police officers surrounded the property.

Inside the hidden room, the safe was empty.

Margaret watched silently.

Then Clara noticed a loose floorboard.

She lifted it.

Beneath it was another compartment.

Inside was a recorder.

They played it.

Margaret's voice.

"Adrian, you were always too stubborn."

A man's voice answered.

"You will pay for what you did."

Margaret laughed.

"No one will believe you."

Clara's heart raced.

Then Adrian said:

"Someone will."

The recording ended.

Daniel rewound it.

In the background, another voice could be heard.

A child.

Idan.

But the recording was made years ago.

He was much younger.

The boy said:

"Grandma, why does that man look like Dad?"

Clara turned toward Adam.

Adam looked sick.

He remembered.

Years ago, Idan had once mentioned seeing a stranger in the mansion.

They had dismissed it as a dream.

Now it was clear.

Adrian had been visiting.

Margaret had known.

Then why had he remained hidden?

A police officer entered.

"We found something outside."

A black envelope.

Inside was an old passport.

ADRIAN HAMILTON

And a current photograph.

Adrian was alive.

He was living only three miles away.

Clara looked at the photo.

Then at Adam.

The two brothers looked almost identical.

But there was one difference.

Adrian had a scar.

Across his cheek.

The same scar as the man who had appeared in the photograph.

Clara whispered:

"It isn't a fake."

Elias looked at her.

"What?"

"Adrian is the man who came back."

Before anyone could respond, every phone in the room received the same message.

Come to the cemetery alone.

Attached was a photograph.

Rachel Hamilton's grave.

Except Rachel had never been buried there.

And on the stone was a fresh inscription:

CLARA, YOU WERE NEVER THE TARGET.
