Chapter 5 - The Man Behind the NameThe Secret Margaret Buried for Eight Years

Daniel spent the entire night tracing Elias Carter.

By sunrise, he had found a corporation.

Hamilton Holdings had once employed a financial consultant named Elias Carter.

Eight years earlier, the man had disappeared.

His official record said he died in a boating accident.

Daniel looked at Clara.

"He's supposedly dead."

"Supposedly?"

"The body was never publicly identified."

Clara remembered the shadow behind the library.

"The man I saw."

"Could have been him."

Daniel opened another file.

Elias had worked directly with Margaret.

They had exchanged thousands of dollars.

Then, eight years earlier, a major transfer occurred.

Thirty million dollars.

The recipient was a private trust.

The beneficiary?

Idan Hamilton.

Clara frowned.

"If Idan was his son, why hide it?"

Daniel stared at the numbers.

"Because it wasn't only about family."

He found another document.

The trust had a clause.

Idan could only access the money at age twenty-one.

But there was another condition.

If Adam died before Idan turned twenty-one, control of the trust would pass to Margaret.

Clara's blood went cold.

"So Margaret has control of everything?"

"Not everything."

Daniel pointed to the final page.

"There is a second beneficiary."

Rachel Hamilton.

Idan's mother.

But Rachel had supposedly died years earlier.

Clara felt a chill.

"What if Rachel was not dead?"

Daniel looked at her.

They both understood.

The case was no longer about a necklace.

It was about a family whose official story might have been completely fabricated.

That afternoon, Idan called Clara from a hidden number.

"Clara?"

"Idan! Where are you?"

"At home."

"Are you alone?"

"No."

He whispered.

"Grandma is talking to someone."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"Can you see him?"

A pause.

Then Idan whispered:

"He has a scar on his face."

Clara's heart pounded.

"Idan, go to your room."

"Why?"

"Just do it."

Before she could say more, the call ended.

Daniel immediately called the police.

But there was a problem.

The police had already received another complaint.

This time, it accused Clara of witness tampering.

Someone claimed she had pressured Idan to lie.

Clara stared at Daniel in disbelief.

"They're trying to destroy me."

Daniel nodded.

"They're trying to make every piece of evidence look contaminated."

At the next hearing, the judge allowed the prosecution to present testimony suggesting Clara had manipulated the child.

Margaret sat quietly.

Too quietly.

Then something unexpected happened.

Idan was called into the courtroom.

Clara's heart broke.

He stood beside his grandmother.

The judge asked him a simple question.

"Do you know the defendant?"

Idan looked toward Clara.

"Yes."

"Do you trust her?"

"Yes."

"Has she ever asked you to lie?"

"No."

Margaret's attorney objected.

But the judge allowed the answer.

Then Idan said:

"Grandma told me Clara stole the emerald."

Margaret stiffened.

Idan continued.

"But that's not why she wants Clara gone."

The courtroom became silent.

The judge leaned forward.

"What do you mean?"

Idan looked at his grandmother.

"Because Clara saw the secret room."

Margaret's face drained of color.

Adam stood abruptly.

"Idan, stop."

The boy turned toward his father.

"Dad, why are you scared?"

No one spoke.

Then Idan reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a folded photograph.

"I found this in Grandma's room."

The judge asked for it.

The bailiff took it.

The photo was enlarged on the courtroom screen.

It showed Margaret standing beside a man with a scar across his cheek.

Clara recognized him.

So did Adam.

He whispered:

"Elias."

Margaret closed her eyes.

And the courtroom doors suddenly opened.

A man walked in.

Scar across his face.

Older.

Alive.

Elias Carter.

He looked directly at Margaret.

Then at Adam.

Then at Idan.

May you like

And finally at Clara.

"I believe," he said calmly, "we need to talk about what happened to Rachel."
