Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be DeadRachel's Voice Returns From the Past

Chaos erupted in the courtroom.

Reporters shouted questions.

Court officers tried to clear the aisle.

Margaret looked as though she had aged twenty years in thirty seconds.

Adam could not move.

Elias Carter stood beneath the courtroom lights.

He was supposed to be dead.

But he was alive.

The judge demanded order.

"Elias Carter, identify yourself."

He did.

Then he said:

"I am here because I know who actually took the emerald."

Everyone turned toward Clara.

Elias continued.

"Clara did not steal it."

The room went silent.

He walked forward.

"I was present in the Hamilton mansion the night the necklace disappeared."

Margaret's attorney objected.

But Elias had proof.

Security logs.

Private bank records.

And an old audio recording.

The recording played.

Margaret's voice filled the courtroom.

"Clara will be blamed."

Another voice answered.

"Adam?"

"No. He trusts me."

The recording ended.

Adam covered his face.

Margaret whispered:

"You betrayed me."

Elias looked at her.

"You betrayed everyone."

The judge demanded an explanation.

Elias finally revealed the story.

Years earlier, Rachel Hamilton had discovered that Adam was not Idan's biological father.

She had also discovered that Margaret had arranged a secret financial scheme involving Elias.

Rachel planned to expose her.

But before she could, Rachel disappeared.

The family announced that Rachel had died unexpectedly.

She had not.

Elias had helped her escape.

Clara stared at him.

"Where is she?"

Elias looked at Idan.

"Your mother is alive."

The boy's face crumpled.

"Where?"

Before Elias could answer, the courtroom doors opened again.

A woman stepped inside.

Older.

Thin.

Her hair streaked with gray.

Adam turned.

His face went white.

"Rachel?"

Clara felt tears fill her eyes.

Rachel walked toward her son.

"I am sorry."

Adam could barely breathe.

"You were dead."

"I had to disappear."

"Why?"

Rachel looked at Margaret.

"Because your mother threatened to destroy our son."

Idan ran toward her.

"Mom?"

Rachel dropped to her knees.

He threw his arms around her.

Clara watched them embrace.

After eight years, a mother held her child again.

Margaret stood motionless.

But then she smiled.

A small, frightening smile.

"You think this changes anything?"

Everyone looked at her.

She turned to the judge.

"I have one final piece of evidence."

She reached into her purse.

A small envelope.

Inside was a handwritten confession.

Clara's confession.

Or so it appeared.

Clara's blood ran cold.

She had never written it.

The judge read it.

The handwriting resembled Clara's.

The words described the theft in detail.

Daniel whispered:

"This could destroy us."

Margaret looked straight at Clara.

"You wanted truth."

She smiled.

"Now you have it."

The judge ordered the evidence submitted.

Clara stared at the forged confession.

Then she noticed something strange.

At the bottom of the page was a date.

The date was twelve years old.

Clara looked at Daniel.

"Daniel."

"What?"

"I couldn't have written this."

"Why?"

Clara pointed to the signature.

"Because twelve years ago, I could barely write English."

Daniel looked again.

Then his eyes widened.

"Who was teaching you?"

Clara whispered:

"Rachel."

Rachel heard her name.

She stepped forward.

"I know who forged it."

Everyone turned.

Rachel looked at Margaret.

"You did."

May you like

Margaret laughed.

Then the courthouse lights suddenly went out.
