Chapter 9: The Bloodline Nobody Knew Existed

For a moment, nobody moved.

The room that had witnessed the beginning of my daughter's life now felt like a courtroom.

Every person standing there was waiting for one thing.

The truth.

But Eleanor Vale had spent twenty-nine years hiding the truth.

She did not reveal secrets.

She traded them.

Piece by piece.

Only when she had no other choice.

"What are you saying?" Caleb asked.

His voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

I knew that tone.

It was the sound of someone trying desperately not to break.

Eleanor looked at him.

"I am saying the test revealed something impossible."

Clara stepped forward.

"Impossible?"

Eleanor looked at her.

"You don't know everything."

A bitter smile appeared on Clara's face.

"No."

She glanced around the room.

"Apparently nobody does."

The baby in my arms moved again.

I looked down at her tiny fingers wrapped around mine.

She was so small.

Yet somehow, her existence had shaken an entire empire.

"Tell us," Caleb said.

Eleanor hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

She wasn't deciding whether to tell the truth.

She was deciding how much of it she could survive revealing.

"Six months ago," Eleanor began, "when I arranged Mara's genetic screening..."

My eyes narrowed.

"You didn't arrange it to check if the baby was healthy."

Silence.

Caleb looked at his mother.

"You used my wife."

Eleanor ignored him.

"The results showed something unusual."

"What unusual?" Clara asked.

Eleanor looked at my daughter.

"The child carried a genetic sequence that did not match the expected family pattern."

My heart tightened.

"What does that mean?"

Nobody answered.

Then Caleb spoke.

"Mom."

His voice hardened.

"Say it clearly."

Eleanor looked away.

"The baby carries a marker from the Vale family line."

Caleb frowned.

"She is my daughter."

"Yes."

"Then what is the problem?"

Eleanor swallowed.

"The problem is that the marker came from a branch of the family that was supposed to be gone."

The room became silent.

Clara's expression changed.

"Impossible."

Eleanor looked at her.

"You know it isn't."

"No."

Clara shook her head.

"The only people from that branch..."

She stopped.

Her face turned pale.

"Wait."

A terrible realization crossed her eyes.

"What did you find?"

Eleanor didn't answer.

Clara stepped closer.

"What did you find?"

Finally, Eleanor whispered:

"The Holloway line."

The name meant nothing to me.

But everyone else reacted.

Caleb looked confused.

Lucinda looked frightened.

And Clara...

Clara looked like someone had just opened a grave.

"No."

Her voice was barely audible.

"No, that can't be."

I looked between them.

"Who are the Holloways?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Clara looked at me.

And I saw something I never expected.

Pity.

"Mara..."

She took a breath.

"The Holloway family was connected to the Vale family long before your husband was born."

I frowned.

"How?"

Clara looked at Eleanor.

"Tell her."

Eleanor remained silent.

Clara continued.

"Thirty years ago, Jonathan discovered that our family had another hidden branch."

"Another child?"

I asked.

Clara nodded slowly.

"Another daughter."

My heart sank.

Another daughter?

How many secrets did this family have?

"Who was she?"

Clara's eyes moved toward Eleanor.

"Her name was Evelyn."

The room changed.

Not because I knew the name.

Because Eleanor reacted.

A tiny movement.

A brief flicker of fear.

But I saw it.

"Eleanor?"

Caleb noticed too.

"Who is Evelyn?"

Nobody answered.

Then Eleanor said:

"She was dangerous."

The words shocked me.

Dangerous.

A person.

A child.

A daughter.

They kept describing people like they were threats.

Like they were problems to remove.

"Why?"

I asked.

"Why was she dangerous?"

Eleanor looked at me.

"Because she knew."

"Knew what?"

"The truth about Jonathan."

Clara shook her head.

"No."

Her voice was firm.

"Evelyn knew the truth about you."

Eleanor's expression hardened.

"You don't understand."

"I understand perfectly."

Clara stepped closer.

"You always thought people were dangerous because they knew too much."

A pause.

"But they weren't dangerous."

She pointed toward the letter.

"Your lies were."

Caleb looked overwhelmed.

"Wait."

He looked at his mother.

"Are you telling me my father had two daughters?"

Eleanor didn't respond.

"Clara."

Clara nodded.

"Yes."

"And Evelyn?"

Clara looked down.

"She disappeared."

Another missing person.

Another secret.

Another life erased.

My chest tightened.

"And my daughter?"

Everyone looked at me.

"How is she connected to Evelyn?"

Eleanor answered.

"Because your daughter has the same marker."

I stared at her.

"What?"

"The same genetic signature."

She looked terrified.

"The same one Evelyn carried."

The room went silent.

I looked down at my baby.

My daughter.

My innocent little girl.

And suddenly the fear that had been surrounding her birth made sense.

Not because she was sick.

Not because something was wrong.

Because she represented a person Eleanor had tried to erase.

A person whose existence could expose everything.

"Where is Evelyn now?" Caleb asked.

No one answered.

Then the sound of a phone ringing interrupted the room.

Everyone turned.

The sound came from the table.

Eleanor's phone.

She looked at the screen.

And her face changed.

Not fear this time.

Shock.

"What?"

Caleb watched her.

"Who is it?"

Eleanor didn't answer.

The phone continued ringing.

Finally, Clara walked over.

"Answer it."

Eleanor stared at the screen.

"No."

Clara's voice became cold.

"Answer."

Slowly...

Eleanor pressed the button.

"Hello?"

For several seconds, nobody heard anything.

Then Eleanor's expression collapsed.

The phone almost slipped from her hand.

"Where are you?"

A pause.

Her breathing became uneven.

"No."

Another pause.

"That's impossible."

Caleb stepped closer.

"Mom?"

Eleanor looked at him.

Her lips trembled.

Then the voice on the phone spoke loudly enough for everyone nearby to hear.

A woman's voice.

Older.

Calm.

Alive.

"Hello, Eleanor."

Everyone froze.

Because Clara whispered the name before anyone else could.

"Evelyn."

The woman on the phone laughed softly.

A sound full of twenty-nine years of anger.

"I thought you would recognize my voice."

Eleanor couldn't speak.

Then Evelyn continued:

"I heard there was a baby born tonight."

A pause.

"And I heard you tried to lock her mother away."

My blood ran cold.

How did she know?

The voice became colder.

"That was your mistake, Eleanor."

Silence.

"You spent your entire life burying the past."

A pause.

"But tonight..."

The woman laughed quietly.

"Tonight, the past was born again."

I held my daughter tighter.

And for the first time since she entered this world...

I understood.

My baby was not the end of the secret.

She was the beginning of the final revelation.

Because Evelyn Holloway was alive.

And she was coming to Hawthorne Manor.
