Chapter 2: The Voice Behind the Wall

The first thing I did was scream.
Not because I thought Eleanor would suddenly change her mind.
Not because I believed the woman who had just locked me away would suddenly remember I was carrying her granddaughter.
I screamed because my body needed someone to hear me.
Anyone.
"HELP!"
My voice bounced against the marble walls.
The sound came back smaller.
Weaker.
Like even the room itself had decided I was alone.
I grabbed the door handle again and pulled until my fingers hurt.
Nothing.
The lock didn't move.
"Eleanor!"
I hit the door with the side of my fist.
"OPEN THIS DOOR!"
Silence.
Then, faintly...
Music.
The orchestra.
The wedding.
The cruelest soundtrack imaginable.
Outside this bathroom, Lucinda Vale was about to begin the happiest moment of her life.
Inside, I was fighting to make sure my daughter had one.
Another contraction came.
This one was different.
Stronger.
Closer.
I slid down against the door, breathing through the pain.
I remembered everything my doctor had told me.
Stay calm.
Breathe.
Don't panic.
But no one had explained what to do when the person who was supposed to help you became the person trapping you.
I placed both hands over my stomach.
"It's okay, sweetheart."
My voice trembled.
"I know you're scared."
A strange thing happened.
Talking to my daughter made the fear slightly quieter.
Because this wasn't just about me anymore.
It was about her.
My little girl.
The baby Eleanor claimed she couldn't wait to meet.
The baby she had bought clothes for.
The baby whose name she had chosen before Caleb and I even agreed.
She had once stood beside my crib and whispered:
"You're going to make this family whole."
I remembered that moment.
I remembered believing her.
And now I wondered if that had ever been real.
The contraction faded.
I forced myself to stand.
I needed another way out.
The bathroom was large.
Beautiful.
Expensive.
A place designed to make people feel comfortable.
But luxury had never felt so much like a cage.
The walls were decorated with white marble imported from Italy.
The bathtub was enormous.
The gold fixtures probably cost more than my first car.
Everything was perfect.
Everything except the fact that the door was locked.
I checked the windows.
Nothing.
The bridal suite was on the second floor.
The window overlooked the garden.
Too high.
Too dangerous.
I couldn't risk falling.
I moved back toward the vanity.
Then I stopped.
Something caught my eye.
A small reflection.
Near the mirror.
My wedding ring.
The tiny diamond hidden beneath the main stone.
My hands shook as I touched it.
A year ago, Caleb had given me this ring.
Not because his family approved.
Because he didn't care.
He told me something I never forgot.
"Mara, everyone in my family owns something expensive."
He smiled.
"But I wanted to give you something meaningful."
Then he explained the hidden compartment.
Inside was a tiny emergency chip.
Not because he expected something like this.
Because Caleb had spent his childhood surrounded by people who solved problems by controlling them.
His father had once told him:
"Never put your entire life in someone else's hands."
At the time, I thought it was just another strange habit from the wealthy world he came from.
Now I understood.
I pressed the small section beneath the diamond.
A tiny light blinked.
The emergency signal activated.
My heartbeat raced.
Caleb would receive it.
If he had his phone.
If he noticed.
If Eleanor hadn't found some way to stop him.
I closed my eyes.
Please.
Please see it.
Outside, the music suddenly stopped.
The ceremony was starting.
A wave of voices moved through the hallway.
Guests.
Footsteps.
People walking past only meters away.
I screamed again.
"HELP!"
This time, I heard something.
A voice.
A woman's voice.
"Hello?"
I froze.
Someone was outside.
"Please!"
I ran to the door as quickly as my body allowed.
"Please help me!"
The footsteps stopped.
"Who's there?"
"It's Mara Ellery! I'm locked inside!"
A pause.
Then confusion.
"Locked?"
"Yes! Please get Eleanor or Caleb!"
The woman didn't answer immediately.
Then I heard a whisper.
"Oh my God."
Hope rushed through me.
"Please! Please call someone!"
But then another voice appeared.
A familiar one.
Eleanor.
"What are you doing here?"
My blood turned cold.
The woman outside was silent.
Eleanor continued.
"This area is private."
"I heard someone calling for help."
"It's nothing."
My heart sank.
"It's not nothing," I shouted.
"Eleanor locked me in here!"
The hallway went silent.
For one beautiful second...
I thought someone believed me.
Then Eleanor spoke.
Her voice was calm.
Controlled.
The voice she used when convincing people she was right.
"Mara is having an emotional episode."
My mouth opened.
An emotional episode?
"She's pregnant," Eleanor continued. "She's frightened. She doesn't know what she's saying."
I slammed my hand against the door.
"No!"
The woman outside hesitated.
"Eleanor..."
"Please," Eleanor said softly.
"I need you to trust me."
That sentence.
Those four words.
They explained everything about Eleanor Vale.
She didn't demand obedience.
She didn't threaten people.
She made them feel like trusting her was the only reasonable choice.
It was how she built companies.
How she controlled employees.
How she controlled her family.
And apparently...
How she controlled witnesses.
The footsteps moved away.
"No!"
I screamed.
"WAIT!"
But they were gone.
I pressed my forehead against the door.
Tears burned my eyes.
The world had become a strange place where a billionaire woman could lock a pregnant woman away...
And convince someone else to walk away.
Then my phone suddenly vibrated.
Not my actual phone.
The emergency chip.
A small signal.
A response.
My breath stopped.
A message appeared through the ring's tiny display.
CALeb received alert.
I nearly collapsed.
He knew.
Caleb knew.
I whispered:
"Please come."
But then another message appeared.
One that made my blood run cold.
Message blocked.
My heart stopped.
Blocked?
Impossible.
The chip wasn't connected to the house network.
It used a separate emergency frequency.
Unless...
Someone knew about it.
Someone had prepared for it.
Someone had anticipated every way I could call for help.
Slowly, I turned toward the locked door.
My fear changed into something else.
Understanding.
Eleanor hadn't acted impulsively.
This wasn't a cruel decision made in the heat of the moment.
She had planned.
She knew where my phone was.
She knew about Caleb.
She knew about the emergency ring.
Because someone had told her.
But who?
The answer came a few seconds later.
A shadow appeared beneath the door.
A man's shoes.
I froze.
"Eleanor?" I whispered.
No answer.
Then a man's voice spoke.
Low.
Calm.
Terrifyingly familiar.
"Mara."
My blood ran cold.
Because I knew that voice.
It wasn't a stranger.
It wasn't a security guard.
It wasn't a wedding employee.
It was someone who should have been on my side.
Someone who had promised to protect me.
Someone whose name was impossible to believe.
"Adrian?"
The fiancé standing at the chapel altar.
Lucinda's future husband.
The man who was supposed to become part of the Vale family.
He stood outside the door.
And he said something I would remember forever.
"Mara, you need to understand something."
I held my breath.
"The baby cannot be born tonight."
My hand moved instinctively over my stomach.
Another contraction began.
And suddenly...
I understood.
Eleanor wasn't acting alone.
This wasn't about one woman trying to save a wedding.
This was about an entire family trying to bury a truth.
A truth connected to my daughter.
A truth they were willing to lock me away to protect.
And Adrian Moss had just proven one thing.
The enemy wasn't standing outside.
May you like
The enemy was inside the family.
