Chapter 14: The Secret Hidden in My Own Blood

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

Not because of the pain.

Not because of exhaustion.

Not because of everything Eleanor had done.

But because of one sentence.

"The genetic match wasn't Jonathan."

A pause.

"It was your father."

My father.

The words didn't belong in this room.

Not in Hawthorne Manor.

Not among the Vale family's secrets.

Not beside the woman who had spent the night destroying every truth we thought we knew.

My father had nothing to do with this.

At least...

That was what I believed.

"Mara."

Caleb's voice pulled me back.

I looked at him.

He looked as confused as I felt.

"What does she mean?"

I shook my head.

"I don't know."

And for once...

I wasn't afraid to say it.

Because I truly didn't know.

My entire life had suddenly become a question mark.

A story someone else had been writing without me knowing.

Eleanor watched me carefully.

And that made my stomach turn.

Because she knew something.

Something about my family.

Something about my past.

Something I had never been told.

"What do you know?" I asked.

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Eleanor didn't answer immediately.

Of course she didn't.

Even now, with everything falling apart, she still measured every word.

"I know your father."

The room became silent.

I stared at her.

"You knew him?"

She nodded.

"Years ago."

"How?"

Eleanor looked away.

"He worked with Jonathan."

My heart sank.

My father.

Connected to Jonathan Vale.

Connected to Eleanor.

Connected to this nightmare.

"No."

I shook my head.

"That's impossible."

Clara stepped forward.

"Why?"

I looked at her.

"Because my father never mentioned any of this."

Clara's expression softened.

"Mara..."

She glanced at Eleanor.

"That doesn't mean it didn't happen."

The words hurt because they were true.

I knew my father.

Or at least...

I thought I did.

He had always been quiet.

Private.

He avoided talking about his past.

Whenever I asked about his younger years, he changed the subject.

I had always assumed it was because he didn't like remembering difficult times.

But now...

I wondered what else he had been hiding.

"What was my father involved in?"

Eleanor remained silent.

Caleb stepped closer.

"Answer her."

Something about the way he said it made Eleanor look at him.

Not as her son.

As someone who no longer belonged to her.

Finally, she spoke.

"Your father was Jonathan's closest friend."

I froze.

"What?"

Clara looked shocked.

"I didn't know that."

Eleanor nodded.

"Because Jonathan kept it hidden."

"Why?"

Eleanor looked at me.

"Because your father helped him."

"Helped him with what?"

A long pause.

"The investigation."

The room went silent.

My father wasn't connected to the crime.

He was connected to exposing it.

"He knew what you were doing?"

Eleanor's face hardened.

"Yes."

"And he helped Jonathan stop you?"

She didn't answer.

But she didn't need to.

I felt dizzy.

My father wasn't just someone who had nothing to do with this.

He had been part of the fight against Eleanor.

A fight that apparently continued decades later.

Then I remembered something.

A memory from when I was a child.

My father sitting at the kitchen table late at night.

A stack of old papers in front of him.

I had asked:

"Dad, what are those?"

He quickly covered them.

"Nothing, sweetheart."

At the time, I believed him.

Now I wondered.

Had he been protecting me?

Or preparing for this moment?

"Mara."

Caleb touched my shoulder.

"Are you okay?"

I looked at him.

"No."

The honesty surprised everyone.

"No, I'm not."

I looked around the room.

"Everyone keeps saying they protected someone."

My voice trembled.

"But nobody protected me."

Silence.

"I grew up believing my family was normal."

A pause.

"I married into this family believing I knew who you all were."

I looked at Eleanor.

"But everyone had a secret."

My eyes filled.

"Everyone except me."

Caleb immediately held my hand.

"You know the truth now."

I looked at him.

"Do I?"

Because that was the terrifying part.

Every answer created another question.

Then Adrian suddenly spoke.

"There is something else."

Everyone turned.

Lucinda looked at him with pain in her eyes.

"Of course there is."

Her voice was bitter.

"Apparently everyone has something else."

Adrian looked ashamed.

"I found something in the vault years ago."

Caleb's expression changed.

"What?"

Adrian swallowed.

"Before I met Lucinda."

Eleanor looked at him sharply.

"You went into the vault?"

Adrian nodded.

"And I saw the documents."

"What documents?"

Adrian looked at me.

"Your father's name."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

"He was listed as one of the people Jonathan trusted."

Clara stepped forward.

"Show me."

Adrian shook his head.

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because I didn't take copies."

A pause.

"I was scared."

Nobody spoke.

Then Caleb asked:

"Why tell us now?"

Adrian looked at Lucinda.

"Because I don't want to be like them."

He looked toward Eleanor.

"I spent years protecting a lie."

His voice cracked.

"And I lost the person I loved because of it."

Lucinda looked away.

The pain between them was obvious.

But there was no time to fix broken hearts.

Not tonight.

Not yet.

Then my daughter made a small sound.

Everyone looked at her.

And suddenly the room became quiet.

A newborn child.

A new beginning.

A chance to end what had continued for generations.

Clara approached slowly.

"May I?"

I hesitated.

Not because I didn't trust her.

Because everything about this night had taught me to be careful.

Then I looked at her.

The woman who had lost twenty-nine years.

The woman who had been erased.

The woman who returned not for revenge...

But for truth.

I nodded.

Clara gently touched my daughter's tiny hand.

Tears filled her eyes.

"She has your courage."

I smiled sadly.

"I don't feel very courageous."

Clara looked at me.

"Courage isn't feeling fearless."

A pause.

"It's choosing to stand anyway."

Before I could answer, Eleanor spoke.

"You need to leave."

Everyone turned.

"What?"

Eleanor looked toward the windows.

The confidence had returned slightly.

But this time it wasn't control.

It was urgency.

"Everyone needs to leave Hawthorne Manor."

Caleb frowned.

"Why?"

Eleanor looked at the darkness outside.

"Because if Evelyn knows about the vault..."

She stopped.

"What?"

Eleanor whispered:

"Then someone else knows too."

The room became cold.

"Who?"

Eleanor looked toward the entrance.

And everyone followed her gaze.

The main doors of Hawthorne Manor opened.

A figure stood outside.

A person nobody expected.

Someone holding a folder filled with documents.

Someone who looked directly at Eleanor.

And said:

"You should have destroyed the evidence when you had the chance."

Eleanor stepped back.

Because she recognized the person.

And so did I.

Not from memory.

From the photographs my father kept hidden for years.

The person standing at the door was connected to my family.

To the Vale family.

To the secret.

And the name they spoke next changed everything.

"My name is Daniel Ellery."

My heart stopped.

Ellery.

My last name.

My family.

"My father was Thomas Ellery."

The man looked at me.

"And he was Jonathan Vale's final witness."

The truth had not ended.

May you like

It had only reached my side of the family.
