Chapter 13: Amelia’s Final Message

The paper trembled in Clara’s hands.

Not because it was old.

Not because it was fragile.

Because the words written on it carried the weight of a woman who had spent twenty-nine years waiting for someone to finally find them.

Amelia.

A name that had existed only as a shadow.

A daughter nobody knew.

A person Eleanor Vale had tried to erase.

And now, somehow, her final message had survived.

For the first time that night, Eleanor looked truly defeated.

Not angry.

Not powerful.

Not calculating.

Defeated.

Because there was one thing Eleanor had never been able to control.

The voices of the people she silenced.

"Mara."

Caleb looked at me.

"Can I see it?"

Clara hesitated.

Then she handed him the paper.

His eyes moved across the page.

The longer he read...

The more his expression changed.

"What does it say?" Lucinda asked.

Caleb didn't answer.

He just stared.

Finally, he whispered:

"She knew everything."

Eleanor's face tightened.

"Give me that."

Nobody moved.

"Caleb."

Her voice became sharp.

"Give me the letter."

For years, that voice had worked.

The voice of a mother.

A billionaire.

A woman used to being obeyed.

But Caleb didn't move.

"No."

The single word shocked everyone.

Especially Eleanor.

"No?"

Caleb looked at her.

"You don't get to take anything else."

A silence followed.

The sentence was simple.

But it carried years of pain.

Years of being controlled.

Years of believing his family was something it wasn't.

Eleanor looked at him.

"You are my son."

Caleb's expression broke slightly.

"That's the problem."

The words hurt her.

I could see it.

Because despite everything she had done...

She still expected her son to belong to her.

"I spent my entire life trying to protect you."

Caleb shook his head.

"No."

He looked at Clara.

"She spent her entire life protecting herself."

Nobody argued.

Because the evidence was standing everywhere.

Clara took the letter back.

"I need to read this."

She unfolded it carefully.

Then she began.

"My name is Amelia Vale."

Her voice shook.

"I do not know who will find this letter."

A pause.

"But if you are reading it, then Eleanor failed."

Everyone became still.

"Eleanor always believed she could control the future."

Clara glanced at her.

"She believed money could bury anything."

She continued.

"But she forgot something."

Her eyes lowered to the paper.

"Truth does not disappear."

The room was silent.

"Twenty-nine years ago, I discovered what Eleanor had done."

Clara stopped.

Then continued.

"She had been changing records."

Caleb looked up.

"Changing what records?"

Clara read:

"Birth certificates. Financial documents. Family records."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"She wasn't just hiding people."

Clara whispered.

"She was rewriting history."

Lucinda shook her head.

"No..."

She looked devastated.

"My whole family..."

She couldn't finish.

Because the truth was too painful.

Clara continued.

"Jonathan found out before I could expose her."

She swallowed.

"He told me to run."

A pause.

"He said Eleanor would destroy anyone who threatened her perfect image."

Eleanor closed her eyes.

But Clara kept reading.

"Jonathan wanted to go public."

Everyone listened.

"But he never got the chance."

The room became colder.

"He died before he could tell the world."

Caleb looked at Eleanor.

"Because of you."

Eleanor didn't answer.

The letter continued.

"I escaped that night."

Clara stopped.

Everyone looked at her.

"You escaped?"

Clara nodded.

"I wasn't the only one."

The room froze.

"What?"

Clara looked at the letter again.

"Amelia wrote this before she disappeared."

She read:

"'If Clara survived, then she must find the others.'"

My heart skipped.

"The others?"

Caleb stepped forward.

"What does that mean?"

Clara looked at Eleanor.

"It means we weren't the only ones."

Everyone became silent.

Eleanor looked away.

And that was the moment I knew.

There were still secrets.

More than anyone imagined.

"How many?" Caleb asked.

Clara's voice was quiet.

"I don't know."

The answer frightened everyone.

Because not knowing was worse.

It meant the damage was bigger than they understood.

Adrian suddenly spoke.

"I know."

Everyone turned.

Lucinda stared at him.

"What?"

Adrian looked exhausted.

"There were records."

Caleb narrowed his eyes.

"What records?"

"The ones Eleanor kept hidden."

"Where?"

Adrian hesitated.

Then:

"The family vault."

Eleanor immediately reacted.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

The reaction was too strong.

Too immediate.

"You don't go there."

Caleb stepped closer.

"Why?"

Silence.

"Mom."

No answer.

"Why can't we go to the vault?"

Eleanor looked at him.

Because for the first time...

She had no explanation.

No excuse.

No story.

Only fear.

"The vault contains things that should remain buried."

Clara laughed quietly.

"That sounds exactly like you."

Eleanor looked at her.

"You don't understand."

"No."

Clara's voice hardened.

"We understand perfectly."

She held Amelia's letter.

"You spent your entire life burying people."

A pause.

"But you forgot something."

She looked at my daughter.

"Buried things don't always stay buried."

The baby started crying again.

Everyone turned.

I held her closer.

And strangely...

Her cry felt powerful.

Like a tiny voice cutting through decades of silence.

Caleb touched her forehead.

"She needs rest."

I nodded.

But before we could move, Eleanor spoke.

"Mara."

I stopped.

I looked at her.

For the first time, I saw something different.

Not hatred.

Not annoyance.

Fear mixed with regret.

"You need to know something."

Caleb immediately stepped between us.

"No."

Eleanor looked at him.

"This concerns her."

I held my daughter tighter.

"What?"

Eleanor took a breath.

"The genetic test."

My stomach tightened.

"What about it?"

She looked at my baby.

"The result wasn't just about the Vale bloodline."

Silence.

"What else?"

Eleanor's voice became barely audible.

"It showed another match."

Caleb frowned.

"Another match?"

Eleanor nodded.

"A living relative."

Nobody moved.

"Who?"

Eleanor looked at Clara.

Then at the door.

Then at me.

"The person who carried the same marker..."

She swallowed.

"Wasn't Jonathan."

A cold feeling spread through me.

"Then who?"

Eleanor whispered:

"Your father."

The room exploded into silence.

My father.

A person completely separate from the Vale family.

A person who had nothing to do with this.

At least...

That was what I believed.

Caleb looked at me.

"Mara..."

I couldn't speak.

Because suddenly the nightmare wasn't only about his family.

It was about mine.

The secret wasn't only buried in the Vale name.

It was buried in my own blood too.

Eleanor looked at me.

And for the first time that night...

I understood why she was truly afraid.

She wasn't afraid my daughter would expose the Vale family.

She was afraid my daughter would expose everyone.

May you like

Including me.
