Chapter 10: The Woman Eleanor Could Never Silence

The phone remained in Eleanor’s hand.
But she wasn't holding it like a device anymore.
She was holding it like a piece of evidence.
Like a weapon that had turned around and pointed directly at her.
Nobody spoke.
Not Caleb.
Not Lucinda.
Not Clara.
Not even me.
Because everyone in that room understood the same thing.
The impossible had happened twice in one night.
First Clara Vale returned from the dead.
Now Evelyn Holloway had returned from the shadows.
And Eleanor Vale was the only person who seemed completely unsurprised by it.
She wasn't confused.
She wasn't asking who Evelyn was.
She knew.
She had always known.
"Eleanor," Evelyn's voice came through the phone.
"Are you still there?"
Slowly, Eleanor lifted the phone closer.
"Where are you?"
Her voice was barely recognizable.
The confidence was gone.
The control was gone.
For the first time, she sounded like everyone else.
A person.
A frightened person.
Evelyn laughed softly.
"You still think you can command people."
A pause.
"You haven't changed."
Eleanor looked around the room.
At Caleb.
At Clara.
At me.
At the baby in my arms.
Then she whispered:
"You should have stayed away."
The words made Clara step forward.
"Stayed away?"
Everyone turned toward her.
Clara looked at Eleanor with years of pain in her eyes.
"That's what you told me too."
Eleanor looked at her.
"You were supposed to disappear."
Clara's face hardened.
"I did."
A pause.
"For twenty-nine years."
The room became painfully quiet.
"I lost my name."
Clara continued.
"I lost my family."
She touched her chest.
"I lost my entire life."
Her voice shook.
"But I survived."
Then she looked at Eleanor.
"And you hated that."
Eleanor said nothing.
Because there was nothing she could say.
The truth had become too large.
Too heavy.
Too public.
The woman who had spent decades controlling the story no longer owned the story.
Evelyn's voice interrupted.
"Eleanor."
Everyone looked toward the phone.
"You still haven't told them the worst part."
Eleanor's face changed.
"What are you talking about?"
A nervous silence followed.
Then Evelyn answered:
"The part about Jonathan."
Caleb immediately reacted.
"My father?"
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"No."
It was barely a whisper.
But everyone heard it.
"No what?" Caleb demanded.
Evelyn spoke before Eleanor could.
"Your father didn't die because of an accident."
The room froze.
My fingers tightened around my daughter.
Caleb stared at the phone.
"What did you say?"
Evelyn continued.
"Jonathan Vale was murdered."
The air disappeared.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Even the wedding guests outside seemed impossibly far away.
Caleb looked at Eleanor.
"No."
His voice cracked.
"No, that's not true."
Evelyn replied calmly.
"Ask your mother."
Everyone turned.
Eleanor looked away.
And that was enough.
A denial would have been immediate.
A lie would have been polished.
But she couldn't deny it.
Because she knew.
"Mom."
Caleb's voice broke.
"Tell me she's lying."
Eleanor remained silent.
"Tell me."
Still nothing.
Then Caleb took a step back.
The pain on his face was worse than anger.
Because he wasn't just discovering a crime.
He was discovering that the person who raised him had stolen his entire history.
"You knew."
Eleanor finally looked at him.
"I was trying to protect you."
"No."
Caleb shook his head.
"You keep saying that."
His eyes filled.
"But every terrible thing you did has the same excuse."
Protect.
Family.
Safety.
Words that sounded beautiful until you saw what they were hiding.
"You weren't protecting me."
His voice became stronger.
"You were protecting yourself."
Eleanor looked wounded.
"You don't understand what I sacrificed."
Clara laughed bitterly.
"Sacrificed?"
She stepped closer.
"You sacrificed us."
Eleanor looked at her.
"I sacrificed everything."
"No."
Clara's voice trembled.
"You sacrificed everyone else."
A silence followed.
Then Evelyn spoke again.
"Caleb."
He looked at the phone.
"There is something you need to know."
Eleanor immediately reacted.
"No."
Everyone noticed.
Caleb noticed.
Clara noticed.
I noticed.
"No?"
Caleb whispered.
"Why are you afraid of what she will say?"
Eleanor didn't answer.
Because the answer was obvious.
She wasn't afraid of Evelyn.
She was afraid of Caleb hearing the truth.
"What happened?" Caleb asked.
Evelyn continued.
"Your father discovered that Eleanor had been hiding financial records."
Caleb looked toward his mother.
"Is that true?"
Eleanor said nothing.
"He discovered she had manipulated company accounts."
Another pause.
"He discovered she had used the Vale Foundation to hide money."
Lucinda covered her mouth.
"No..."
Her entire world was collapsing.
The charity.
The reputation.
The perfect family image.
Everything.
"He confronted her."
Evelyn's voice became quieter.
"And that was when she made her biggest mistake."
Caleb stared at the phone.
"What mistake?"
Evelyn answered:
"She thought removing one person would solve everything."
The words landed like thunder.
Removing.
Not convincing.
Not stopping.
Removing.
Caleb looked at his mother.
"What did you do?"
Eleanor finally broke.
Not completely.
Not enough.
But enough for everyone to see the cracks.
"I didn't mean for him to die."
Nobody spoke.
The sentence was worse than a confession.
Because it wasn't a denial.
It was an admission.
Caleb stepped away from her.
"What does that mean?"
Eleanor's eyes filled.
"Your father was going to destroy everything."
"So you killed him?"
"No!"
The scream came from somewhere deep inside her.
"I didn't kill him."
The room went silent.
Then Eleanor whispered:
"But I let it happen."
The confession hung in the air.
Heavy.
Permanent.
Lucinda began crying.
Caleb looked like he had stopped recognizing his own mother.
And I...
I looked at my daughter.
Because suddenly I understood something.
Eleanor hadn't been afraid of my baby because of genetics.
She was afraid because my daughter's birth happened at the exact moment her lies finally ran out of places to hide.
Then Evelyn spoke again.
"There is one more thing."
Nobody wanted to hear it.
But everyone needed to.
"What?" Caleb asked.
Evelyn was quiet for a moment.
Then:
"The person who helped Eleanor cover up Jonathan's death..."
A pause.
"Was someone standing in that room tonight."
Everyone looked around.
My heart began racing.
Because there were only a few people there.
Caleb.
Lucinda.
Clara.
Adrian.
Eleanor.
The room became unbearably still.
Then Evelyn said the name.
And the entire family shattered.
"Adrian Moss."
My blood turned cold.
The groom.
Lucinda's fiancé.
The man who had stood outside my bathroom door.
The man who knew exactly what Eleanor was doing.
The man who told me my daughter couldn't be born tonight.
Suddenly, every piece fell into place.
Adrian wasn't helping Eleanor.
He wasn't protecting the wedding.
He was protecting the secret.
And somewhere in the mansion...
The man who was supposed to marry into the Vale family was preparing to run.
May you like
Because he knew the truth was finally coming for him.
