Chapter 4 - THE WRONG GIRLThe words made no sense.

Vittorio grabbed Elena's arm.
âWhat did you mean?â
Elena pulled away.
âThey thought they had Lucy.â
âThey do have Lucy.â
âNo.â
âThen who was taken?â
Elena looked toward the upstairs hallway.
âEmma's daughter.â
Silence.
Emma froze.
âMy daughter?â
âYes.â
Emma stared at Elena.
âMy daughter died eight years ago.â
Elena shook her head.
âShe was reported dead.â
Emma's face collapsed.
Vittorio looked between them.
âWhat is going on?â
Emma started crying.
She had kept her face under control for three months.
She had faced Bianca's cruelty.
She had recorded the abuse.
She had survived threats.
But now she broke.
âShe wasn't dead,â Emma whispered.
Vittorio sat down.
âTell me.â
Emma covered her mouth.
âEight years ago, my husband died. My daughter disappeared the same night.â
âWhy?â
âBecause someone took her.â
âWho?â
Emma stared directly at him.
âYour mother.â
Vittorio's expression hardened.
âThat doesn't make sense.â
âShe came to me.â
âWhy?â
âShe said my daughter was in danger.â
Emma wiped her tears.
âShe told me if I wanted my daughter alive, I had to make everyone believe she was dead.â
Vittorio looked at Elena.
Elena nodded.
âIsabella saved several children.â
Vittorio whispered:
âFrom whom?â
âThe Bellini Foundation.â
His stomach dropped.
The foundation was a charitable organization Vittorio had inherited.
Hospitals.
Shelters.
Schools.
International aid.
It had been his pride.
His mother had always told him it represented the best of their family.
âYou're saying the foundation was involved?â
âNot officially,â Elena said.
âThen who?â
Elena stared at him.
âYour father.â
Vittorio's face changed.
His father had been dead for twelve years.
Dead in a plane crash.
Or so everyone believed.
A sound came from the hallway.
Lucy walked toward them.
She looked frightened.
âDaddy?â
Vittorio immediately went to her.
âI'm here.â
Lucy whispered:
âBianca told me something.â
âWhat?â
âShe said Grandma was still alive.â
Vittorio looked at Elena.
Lucy continued.
âShe said Grandma kept me safe.â
âWhy would she say that?â
Lucy hesitated.
âBecause she said I was worth a lot of money.â
Vittorio felt sick.
âHow much?â
Lucy shook her head.
âShe said I was worth more than the house.â
Then Elena spoke.
âNot money.â
Everyone turned.
Elena looked at Lucy.
âBlood.â
Vittorio stared.
âWhat?â
Elena moved toward Lucy slowly.
âYour daughter carries something your family has been searching for for decades.â
âWhat?â
âThe Bellini inheritance.â
âI know the inheritance.â
âNo.â
Elena's voice dropped.
âNot the money.â
She touched Lucy's shoulder.
âA genetic line.â
Vittorio frowned.
âThat's impossible.â
Elena shook her head.
âYour mother discovered that the Bellini family has a rare genetic condition. It was intentionally hidden. And someone has spent decades trying to locate descendants who carry it.â
Vittorio stared at Lucy.
âWhat does Lucy have?â
Elena answered:
âProof.â
Before Vittorio could ask another question, the front door slammed open.
A man walked inside.
He was wearing an expensive black suit.
No weapon.
No mask.
He looked completely calm.
Vittorio recognized him immediately.
His father's former attorney.
âMr. Bellini,â the man said.
Vittorio reached for his gun.
The attorney smiled.
âYou should put that away.â
âWhy?â
âBecause I came to give you your daughter back.â
Vittorio froze.
âWhere is Lucy?â
The attorney looked beside him.
Lucy was still standing there.
He pointed toward the staircase.
âNot that daughter.â
Vittorio's face went cold.
The attorney placed a small box on the table.
Inside was an old hospital bracelet.
It carried one name.
LUCIA BELLINI.
But the date was twenty years earlier.
Vittorio stared.
His daughter had been born twelve years ago.
He slowly looked at Lucy.
Then at Elena.
And finally at Emma.
The attorney smiled.
âYou've spent twelve years protecting a girl.â
He leaned closer.
May you like
âBut you never asked yourself one simple question.â
âWhich girl?â
