Chapter 11 - THE FIRST LUCYBianca was barely conscious.

Vittorio knelt beside her.
âWhat do you mean?â
Bianca coughed.
âYour father created the entire lie.â
His father laughed.
âShe's delirious.â
âShut up.â
Vittorio looked at Bianca.
âWho was the first Lucy?â
Bianca closed her eyes.
âIsabella had a daughter before you knew about her.â
Vittorio looked at his real daughter.
She went pale.
âMy daughter?â
âYes.â
Isabella whispered:
âI had a sister?â
Bianca nodded.
âLucy was her name.â
Vittorio stared.
The girl standing beside him had the same name as the child he believed was his daughter.
Everything suddenly became unbearable.
âWhat happened to her?â
Bianca's eyes filled with tears.
âYour father killed her.â
Isabella covered her mouth.
âNo.â
âWhy?â
âBecause she wasn't obedient.â
Vittorio's father stepped forward.
âThat is enough.â
Vittorio raised his weapon.
âDon't move.â
His father smiled.
âYou still believe guns solve family problems.â
âNo.â
Vittorio's voice shook.
âSometimes they do.â
His father stared at him.
Then said:
âYou killed her too.â
Vittorio froze.
âWhat?â
âYou were there.â
A memory flashed.
A hallway.
Blood.
A child crying.
His mother's voice.
Vittorio fell backward.
Images began returning.
He was twenty-seven.
He had discovered the trafficking network.
He had confronted his father.
A little girl was hiding behind Isabella.
Someone raised a gun.
A shot.
Isabella screaming.
Vittorio falling.
Then darkness.
He gasped.
His mother had erased his memory.
Not to hide the crime.
To protect him.
Because he had been shot in the head.
The man who pulled the trigger wasn't his father.
It was Marcus.
Marcus stepped forward.
âI was following orders.â
Vittorio looked at him.
âYou killed her.â
âYes.â
âWhy?â
âBecause she saw me.â
Lucy suddenly whispered:
âThat's not true.â
Everyone turned.
She pointed at Marcus.
âYou killed Grandma too.â
Marcus's face changed.
âWhat?â
Lucy was crying.
âI remember.â
The cemetery fell silent.
âGrandma wasn't killed in the study.â
Vittorio looked at her.
âShe was taken outside.â
Lucy continued.
âShe told me to hide.â
âWhere?â
âIn the car.â
Marcus stepped backward.
Lucy pointed at him.
âYou came after her.â
Marcus shook his head.
âNo.â
âYou had blood on your hands.â
Bianca closed her eyes.
Vittorio understood.
His daughter had remembered.
The Black Ledger wasn't merely financial records.
It was a map of every crime.
Every name.
Every payment.
Every body.
And Isabella had hidden the final evidence inside a child's memory.
Vittorio turned toward his father.
âWhere is the vault?â
His father smiled.
âYou'll never find it.â
Vittorio looked at Lucy.
She slowly pointed toward the cemetery chapel.
âUnder Grandma.â
Everyone froze.
âMy mother's grave?â
Lucy nodded.
âThere's a door.â
Vittorio stood.
He walked toward the chapel.
His father suddenly shouted:
âStop!â
Vittorio turned.
For the first time, his father's mask had disappeared.
He looked terrified.
Not angry.
Terrified.
Vittorio smiled.
âYou're afraid.â
His father said nothing.
Vittorio pushed open the chapel door.
Behind Isabella Bellini's altar was a stone panel.
He moved it.
A staircase descended beneath the cemetery.
At the bottom was a steel vault.
On the door was one sentence.
ONLY A SON WHO REMEMBERS CAN ENTER.
Vittorio touched the lock.
May you like
The door opened.
And inside was a coffin.
