Chapter 14 - THE MOTHERThey followed Marcus into the underground tunnel.

The passage ran beneath the cemetery for nearly half a mile.
Blue lights flickered along the walls.
At the end stood an iron door.
Marcus pushed Isabella inside.
Vittorio raised his weapon.
âLet her go.â
Marcus laughed.
âYou still think this ends with me.â
âWhat is inside?â
Marcus looked at Isabella.
âYour mother.â
The door opened.
A woman sat in a chair.
Her hair was gray.
Her wrists were restrained.
Her face was thin.
But her eyes were alive.
Isabella stopped breathing.
âMom?â
The woman lifted her head.
For several seconds she simply stared.
Then she whispered:
âMy little girl.â
Isabella ran.
Vittorio followed.
The woman looked at him.
âVittorio.â
He stopped.
âYou know me.â
âI knew you before you knew yourself.â
He stared.
âYou'reâŠâ
âMaria.â
Isabella's mother.
Vittorio had never seen her.
He moved closer.
âMy mother told me you were dead.â
âShe wanted you to believe that.â
âWhy?â
âBecause your father would have killed me.â
Marcus laughed from the doorway.
âHe almost did.â
Maria looked at him.
âYou always were a coward.â
Marcus raised his gun.
Maria smiled.
âYou still won't pull the trigger.â
Marcus hesitated.
Vittorio noticed.
âWhat does he fear?â
Maria looked at him.
âThe truth.â
âWhat truth?â
âThat Marcus is not who he says he is.â
Marcus fired.
Vittorio shoved Isabella aside.
The bullet hit the wall.
A second shot.
Catherine appeared behind Marcus.
She fired.
Marcus dropped his gun.
Vittorio tackled him.
They crashed against the steel floor.
Marcus fought wildly.
Vittorio punched him.
âYou killed my mother.â
Marcus laughed.
âShe asked me to.â
Vittorio froze.
âWhat?â
âShe knew what your father would do.â
âNo.â
âShe begged me.â
Vittorio slammed him against the wall.
âLiar.â
Marcus smiled through blood.
âAsk Elena.â
Vittorio turned.
Elena stood in the tunnel.
Alive.
The bullet had been stopped by a hidden metal plate under her coat.
She looked at Marcus.
âHe's telling the truth.â
Vittorio stared.
âYou knew?â
âI knew your mother had chosen Marcus to perform one final act.â
âWhat act?â
Elena's voice broke.
âShe asked him to kill her.â
Vittorio stood frozen.
âWhy?â
âBecause she knew your father would torture her for the location of Isabella.â
Maria closed her eyes.
âShe sacrificed herself.â
Vittorio looked at his father, unconscious on the floor.
All those years.
All that hatred.
All that grief.
And the truth was more complicated than anything he'd imagined.
Then Maria whispered:
âThere's one thing you don't know.â
Vittorio looked at her.
âYour father didn't create Isabella.â
âWhat?â
Maria stared at him.
âShe was born naturally.â
Vittorio frowned.
âThen why all the experiments?â
âTo make you believe she was the heir.â
His blood turned cold.
âWhy?â
Maria looked at Isabella.
âBecause the real heir died.â
Silence.
âWho?â
Maria pointed toward Lucy.
Vittorio's heart stopped.
âThe girl you call LucyâŠâ
Maria whispered.
ââŠis Isabella's twin.â
Everyone froze.
Lucy slowly looked at Isabella.
The two girls stared at one another.
Same eyes.
Same face.
Different lives.
Vittorio's voice cracked.
âYou're saying they are twins?â
Maria nodded.
âSeparated at birth.â
âBut which one is the heir?â
Maria smiled sadly.
âBoth.â
Then a distant alarm began screaming.
The tunnel lights turned red.
Catherine looked at her phone.
âWe have a problem.â
May you like
âWhat?â
âThe mansion is on fire.â
