CHAPTER 3 — THE LETTER INSIDE THE SEASHELL

Victoria tried to leave.

She barely reached the grand staircase before Daniel stopped her.

"You're not going anywhere."

The little girl suddenly stepped forward.

"My mommy told me to give Grandpa the shell."

The room fell silent again.

Daniel knelt.

"Where is your mother?"

The child lowered her head.

"She died last week."

A collective gasp echoed through the mansion.

The girl reached into her small coat pocket.

Then she pulled out a folded envelope.

Written across the front were six words.

FOR VINCENT — IF I DIE FIRST

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

The handwriting belonged to Maya.

Victoria began shaking.

"No..."

"No, no, no..."

Daniel opened the letter.

His voice trembled as he read aloud.

"Vincent,

If you are reading this, then I was right.

Someone spent years making sure we never found each other again.

But I never stopped loving you.

And I never told our daughter who her father was because I was afraid they would hurt her too."

The room exploded.

OUR DAUGHTER.

Daniel froze.

The guests froze.

Even Margaret stopped breathing.

Daniel continued reading.

"Her name is Lily.

She is your daughter.

And if anything happens to me, please protect her."

The letter slipped from Daniel's fingers.

The little girl.

The frightened child standing beside the broken shell.

Was Vincent Carter's daughter.

His secret child.

The rightful Carter heir.

Victoria stumbled backward.

Everything she had built over twenty years was collapsing.

Then Daniel found one final page hidden inside the envelope.

A list of bank transfers.

Private investigators.

Forged legal documents.

Bribes.

Kidnapping payments.

Every payment traced back to one person.

Victoria Carter.

The room erupted into chaos.

Police officers attending the funeral as private security immediately stepped forward.

Victoria's knees buckled.

For years she had hidden the truth.

For years she had stolen another woman's life.

And now the evidence sat in everyone's hands.

But one final secret remained.

A secret Vincent himself had left behind.
