CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN WHO WAS ERASED

The whispers spread through the funeral hall like wildfire.

"Maya Elena?"

"Who is Maya?"

"Why is her name listed among the family members?"

Victoria's face had turned completely pale.

The little girl stood frozen beside the broken seashell, tears still running down her cheeks.

Vincent's son, Daniel Carter, slowly unfolded the memorial booklet.

His hands shook.

There it was.

Printed near the bottom of the family tribute page.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF:
VINCENT CARTER

BELOVED FATHER,
HUSBAND,
AND FRIEND

SURVIVED BY:
VICTORIA CARTER
DANIEL CARTER

AND IN MEMORY OF MAYA ELENA CARTER

The room erupted.

"What does that mean?"

"Who is Maya Elena Carter?"

Victoria immediately stepped forward.

"It's a mistake."

Her voice cracked.

"A printing mistake."

But before anyone could believe her, an elderly woman suddenly stood from the second row.

Everyone recognized her instantly.

Margaret Carter.

Vincent's eighty-two-year-old mother.

The true matriarch of the Carter family.

Her cane struck the marble floor.

Once.

Twice.

Then she pointed directly at Victoria.

"Stop lying."

Silence swallowed the room.

Victoria's eyes widened.

Margaret slowly turned toward the little girl.

Tears filled her eyes.

"My God..."

"It really is her."

The child looked confused.

Margaret knelt before her and touched her cheek.

"You have your mother's eyes."

Victoria screamed.

"No!"

But the old woman wasn't finished.

Twenty-six years earlier, Vincent Carter had secretly fallen in love with a young artist named Maya Elena.

They planned to marry.

Then Maya disappeared.

Everyone was told she had abandoned him.

Run away.

Vanished forever.

Only now, standing in the middle of the funeral, Margaret revealed the horrifying truth.

Maya had never left.

Someone had paid people to make her disappear.

Someone who desperately wanted Vincent for herself.

Someone standing in the room right now.

Victoria Carter.

The guests stared at Victoria in horror.

And for the first time in years...

Victoria looked terrified.
