Chapter 2 — The Woman Behind the Glass Preston stared at the death certificate as though reality itself had betrayed him. "No..." he whispered. The nurse gently reached for his arm, but he pulled away. "There has to be a mistake." "I'm sorry, Captain Hale." Her voice remained calm, almost rehearsed. "Mrs. Bennett suffered cardiac arrest after extensive smoke inhalation. The paperwork has already been filed." He felt the hospital corridor tilt beneath him. Three days. For three days he had remained at the fire investigation, then the department hearings, then by Khloe's bedside while she recovered from what doctors repeatedly described as "minor smoke exposure." Three days. He had never come to see Tara. The bouquet slipped from his hand. White roses scattered across the polished floor. From behind the tinted glass of the restricted burn unit, Tara watched every second. Alive. Bandages wrapped her arms and neck. Half her face was hidden beneath healing dressings. The hospital administrator quietly entered her room. "They believed it was safer this way." Tara nodded weakly. Her father had insisted. Richard Bennett had arrived less than an hour after Wyatt secretly called him. Few people knew Richard Bennett. Even fewer knew he owned Bennett Medical Holdings, the company that quietly financed more than sixty trauma hospitals across the country—including this one. When doctors warned that someone might have deliberately trapped Tara inside the bridal suite, Richard made one decision. "Legally declare her deceased." The physicians stared. Richard didn't blink. "If someone wanted my daughter dead... I want them to believe they succeeded." Meanwhile, Preston refused to leave. "I want to see her." "I'm afraid that isn't possible." "The body?" "The family has already taken care of arrangements." Family. The word hit him like another collapse. Because Tara had no close relatives. Except... Her father. The mysterious businessman she almost never spoke about. His phone rang. Khloe. "Preston..." Her voice trembled. "I'm scared." He looked toward the closed hospital doors. Then he turned away. "I'll be there." Behind the glass, Tara closed her eyes. For the last time, she chose to let him walk away. / Chapter 1 / 2 1

Chapter 3 — The Truth Hidden in the Flames

Chapter 3 — The Truth Hidden in the Flames

The official fire investigation should have ended within forty-eight hours.

Instead, Wyatt couldn't sleep.

Something refused to make sense.

He replayed his helmet camera footage frame by frame.

At first, all he noticed was smoke.

Then...

A woman.

Khloe.

Twenty-three minutes before the alarms.

She wasn't running.

She was calmly leaving the bridal preparation room.

Something glittered in her hand.

Wyatt enlarged the frame.

Pearls.

The bracelet.

Minutes later, another angle appeared.

Khloe lighting one of the decorative candles after venue staff had already extinguished them for safety before the ceremony.

His stomach tightened.

He immediately forwarded everything to Fire Marshal Elena Brooks.

Within hours investigators returned to the estate.

Hidden beneath collapsed beams they discovered something impossible.

The bridal room door hadn't jammed naturally.

A heavy antique cabinet had been deliberately pushed against it.

From the outside.

Fingerprints survived on the untouched wooden edge.

Khloe Sinclair.

Police obtained search warrants.

Inside her apartment they found far more than stolen jewelry.

A second phone.

Deleted messages.

Insurance documents.

And one conversation that froze every detective in the room.

Khloe:

"If she dies today, everything becomes yours."

Preston:

"I don't want to talk about this anymore."

Khloe:

"Then stop pretending you don't love me."

Investigators initially believed Preston had helped plan Tara's death.

But the remaining messages revealed something different.

He never answered.

Instead, he repeatedly told Khloe to stay away from the wedding.

She came anyway.

Then another discovery surfaced.

Khloe had secretly purchased accelerant two days before the ceremony.

She had bribed one temporary venue worker to leave candles burning after inspection.

Most horrifying of all...

She admitted in one voice recording:

"Preston always chooses me eventually."

She simply never expected someone else would rescue Tara first.

That night police arrested Khloe on charges including attempted murder, arson, insurance fraud, and conspiracy.

Preston wasn't arrested.

But his badge was suspended indefinitely.

His reputation disappeared overnight.

And none of that hurt as much as realizing one unbearable truth.

He had never intended to kill Tara.

He had simply chosen someone else.

Sometimes...

That choice is enough.
