PART 3 — The Family That Protected the Monster
PART 3 — The Family That Protected the Monster
My hands shook as the recording continued.
Richard's calm voice sounded almost cheerful.
"This is our little secret."
Then Chloe's tiny voice.
"I want my dad..."
A loud thud.
A frightened gasp.
The recording ended.
I couldn't listen anymore.
Meredith stood frozen beside me.
Her face had turned completely white.
"I swear..." she whispered.
"I never knew."
I wanted to believe her.
But another question wouldn't leave my mind.
"Then why did Chloe say your mother told her not to make me sad?"
Meredith didn't answer.
She simply collapsed into a chair.
Minutes later, she finally spoke.
"When I was ten..."
She couldn't finish.
Tears streamed down her face.
"My mother caught him hurting me."
Silence.
"She said if anyone found out, it would destroy the family."
The room spun.
Richard had done this before.
His wife had hidden it.
For decades.
Meredith had spent her entire childhood believing silence was survival.
She looked at me with unbearable guilt.
"I thought he had changed."
"You let him babysit our daughter."
Her sob echoed through the house.
"I was wrong."
That afternoon, I drove Chloe to the hospital.
Doctors documented every bruise.
Specialists spoke gently with her.
Then detectives arrived.
One investigator looked at the photographs.
Another listened to the recording.
Neither of them said much.
Until the senior detective quietly asked,
"Does Richard Vance spend time with any other children?"
I froze.

My younger sister had two daughters.
They had spent the weekend with him.
