CHAPTER 2: THE MAN WHO RAN INTO THE FIRE The world came back in fragments. Metal screamed. Glass exploded across the cabin. The SUV rolled once... twice... then slammed onto its side in a cloud of dust. Silence. Only the ticking of the damaged engine remained. Daniel groaned, blood running down the side of his forehead. His left arm hung uselessly against the crushed door. "Emily..." No answer. He turned his head. His wife was unconscious, trapped beneath the collapsed dashboard. The map she had been holding drifted slowly through shattered glass like a fallen leaf. "Dad..." A tiny voice. Ethan. The nine-year-old was hanging upside down, still strapped into his seatbelt. Tears filled his eyes, but he was alive. "I'm here, buddy," Daniel whispered. Then he heard another sound. Not from inside the SUV. A little girl crying. "Lily!" His six-year-old daughter had been thrown through the broken rear window during the rollover. She was lying nearly twenty feet away beside the roadside ditch. And gasoline was pouring from the SUV. The sharp smell filled the air. A spark snapped beneath the engine. Someone shouted from the highway. "It's going to explode!" Cars stopped. People gathered. Everyone pulled out their phones. No one moved closer. Then the same golden dog darted back into view. Instead of running away, it stood beside Lily, barking desperately at the crowd. Again. And again. As if begging someone to save her. A pickup truck screeched to a stop. The driver—a broad-shouldered middle-aged rancher named Jack—jumped out before the tires had fully stopped spinning. "What are you doing?" someone yelled. "It'll blow!" Jack ignored them. He sprinted straight toward the wreck. Daniel slammed his shoulder against the crushed driver's door. Nothing. Again. Nothing. Jack reached the SUV, grabbed the twisted frame with both hands, and pulled with everything he had. The metal groaned. The door opened just enough. "Get your son!" Jack shouted. Daniel crawled out, ignoring the pain tearing through his body. Together they freed Ethan. But Emily was still trapped. And Lily still wasn't moving. The engine crackled louder. Then flames appeared beneath the hood. Jack looked at the burning vehicle... Then at the unconscious mother inside. He didn't hesitate. He climbed back into the fire. / Chapter 1 / 2 1

CHAPTER 3: THE HERO NO ONE EXPECTED

CHAPTER 3: THE HERO NO ONE EXPECTED

Heat swallowed the cabin.

Smoke burned Jack's lungs as he reached Emily.

The dashboard had crushed her legs beneath twisted steel.

"Stay with me," he said.

She didn't respond.

Outside, Daniel had finally reached Lily.

His hands trembled as he checked for a pulse.

Nothing.

"No..."

His voice broke.

"Lily... please..."

The golden dog sat beside them, whining softly.

Then...

A faint cough.

Lily's fingers twitched.

Daniel burst into tears.

"She's breathing!"

Paramedics finally arrived, racing toward the wreck with hydraulic cutters.

Inside the SUV, Jack wrapped both arms around Emily as firefighters tore away the crushed door.

"Pull!"

The metal snapped free.

They carried Emily out only seconds before—

BOOM!

A fireball erupted behind them.

The SUV disappeared inside an explosion of flames.

The shockwave knocked everyone to the ground.

Silence followed.

Then applause.

Complete strangers clapped through tears.

Daniel staggered toward Jack.

Without saying a word...

He hugged the man who had just saved his family.

Days later, doctors delivered difficult news.

Emily would recover.

Ethan would recover.

Lily would recover.

But Daniel's left leg had been shattered beyond repair.

He would never walk without assistance again.

Daniel smiled anyway.

"They're alive."

"That's enough."

Jack quietly prepared to leave the hospital.

He expected no reward.

No recognition.

Then a nurse hurried toward him.

May you like

"Sir..."

"Someone wants to meet you."
