Chapter 2: The Truth Behind the Crash

Chapter 1: The Woman Who Refused to Die

Leo never took his eyes off my hand.

The tiny twitch of my finger had lasted less than a second, but to my son, it was proof that hope still existed.

He straightened, wiping away his tears before Marcus could notice anything unusual.

"I want some water," Leo said quietly.

Marcus looked irritated. "Then go ask a nurse."

Leo nodded and walked toward the door. For the first time in his nine years of life, my little boy moved with calculated caution.

He wasn't leaving for water.

He was buying time.

As soon as the door opened, Marcus grabbed Victoria's arm.

"What lawyer?" he hissed.

Victoria wrapped her arms around herself.

"Maybe the boy is bluffing."

"No child invents a name like Lawson," Marcus snapped. "Did Valerie tell anyone else?"

"I don't know."

My pulse monitor accelerated.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

Marcus glanced at the machine.

"She's reacting."

A nurse entered moments later.

"Her heart rate is elevated," she said. "I'll notify Dr. Bennett."

Marcus immediately transformed into the grieving husband.

"I've barely left her side," he said, his voice thick with practiced emotion.

The nurse gave him a sympathetic smile.

"You should prepare yourself for any outcome."

If only she knew.

Fifteen minutes later, another voice echoed through the room.

Calm.

Confident.

"Mr. Hayes?"

Marcus froze.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Evelyn Lawson."

The attorney.

"You've been difficult to reach," Ms. Lawson continued. "Since your son contacted my office, I thought it best to come personally."

Silence.

Then Marcus laughed.

"A child called you. Valerie is dying."

Ms. Lawson stepped closer.

"Which is exactly why her revised estate documents become relevant."

Victoria's breathing grew shallow.

"What revised documents?" Marcus asked.

Ms. Lawson adjusted her glasses.

"The documents transferring every asset into a trust managed by Valerie Hayes."

She paused.

"Documents specifically stating that if Valerie's death occurs under suspicious circumstances, no assets transfer to her spouse pending investigation."

Marcus went completely still.

The mask had cracked.

And beneath it, rage stared back.
