Chapter 2: The Truth Behind the Crash

Two days later, I opened my eyes.

The room blurred before slowly sharpening into focus.

Leo.

He sat beside my bed asleep, clutching my hand.

"Mom?"

His voice broke.

I blinked once.

Then twice.

The next thing I knew, he was crying against my shoulder while nurses rushed into the room.

Dr. Bennett called it miraculous.

I called it unfinished business.

As my strength slowly returned, Detective Raymond Pierce visited me.

"I need you to tell me everything you remember," he said.

I described the documents.

Marcus's insistence.

His anger.

The drive that night.

Then the brakes.

The detective's expression darkened.

"Your vehicle was inspected after the crash," he admitted. "Initially, the failure was attributed to impact damage."

"Initially?" I whispered.

"We reopened the report."

He slid photographs onto my hospital tray.

The brake lines had been deliberately cut.

I stared at the images.

Victoria had been at our house that evening.

Marcus had insisted I drive alone.

My husband had not simply expected me to die.

He had arranged it.

Three days later, police officers arrested Marcus in the hospital lobby.

He struggled violently.

"You can't prove anything!"

Detective Pierce calmly replied, "Actually, we can."

Victoria had confessed.

Faced with conspiracy charges, she admitted everything.

Marcus had promised they would inherit millions.

Victoria had convinced herself that her older sister had always had the better life.

The better husband.

The better future.

Jealousy had grown into resentment.

Resentment had become greed.

Greed had become attempted murder.

As Marcus was led away in handcuffs, he looked directly at me.

"You ruined everything."

I met his gaze without fear.

May you like

"No, Marcus."

"You did."
