Chapter 3: The Man Who Came Too Late

Chapter 3: The Man Who Came Too Late
Michael burst into the room without knocking.
"What the hell is this?"
Every conversation stopped.
Rachel immediately stood between him and Catherine.
"You don't get to raise your voice."
Michael ignored her.
His eyes stayed fixed on Daniel, who had calmly remained near the doorway.
"So this is why you stopped calling me?"
Catherine stared at him in disbelief.
"You think that's what happened?"
Michael pointed toward Daniel.
"Looks like you found a replacement pretty quickly."
Rachel laughed.
It wasn't amusement.
It was disgust.
"A replacement?"
She stepped closer.
"You disappeared while your wife was in labor."
"You were in another woman's apartment."
"Your mistress answered your phone."
"And somehow you're the victim?"
Michael's face tightened.
"It wasn't like that."
Before anyone could respond, another familiar voice echoed from the hallway.
"Michael?"
Amber Collins froze in the doorway.
She had followed him to the hospital.
The room became painfully quiet.
Catherine looked from Michael...
...to Amber...
...then back again.
Neither of them denied anything.
That silence said more than words ever could.
Catherine reached into the bedside drawer.
She removed her wedding ring.
Without anger...
Without drama...
She placed it into Michael's hand.
"I needed my husband last night."
She looked at Emma sleeping peacefully.
"My daughter doesn't."
Michael's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
For the first time in years...
He had no excuse.
Daniel quietly stepped toward the exit.
Before leaving, he looked at Catherine.
"You and Emma have an excellent prognosis."
May you like
It sounded like medical advice.
But everyone understood it meant far more.
