CHAPTER 3 — THE LIE THAT BUILT A KINGDOM
CHAPTER 3 — THE LIE THAT BUILT A KINGDOM
King Aldric arrived before anyone could speak again.
The massive palace doors burst open.
Royal guards immediately knelt.
"My King."
The old monarch walked into the ballroom wearing black ceremonial armor.
His expression remained calm.
Until he saw the music box.
His face turned white.
"So..."
he whispered.
"You survived."
Every noble looked toward him in disbelief.
Princess Elyria slowly turned.
"Father..."
"What does he mean?"
The king closed his eyes.
For years...
he had rehearsed this confession.
He had simply hoped it would never be necessary.
Fifteen years earlier...
the palace had indeed been attacked.
But the assassins had not taken the infant prince.
The king himself had ordered the child removed.
A prophecy had terrified him.
"The second royal child," the royal seer had warned,
"will unite the kingdom...
only after the crown falls."
Afraid that civil war would destroy Eldoria, Aldric secretly entrusted the baby to Sir Rowan, his most loyal knight.
The knight fled.
But their carriage was attacked.
Everyone believed the child had died.
Everyone...
except Rowan's widow.
She escaped with the infant.
She raised him as her own.
Poor.
Forgotten.
Hidden from every kingdom.
The boy looked directly at the king.
"You abandoned me."
King Aldric lowered his head.
"Yes."
The word struck harder than any sword.
Princess Elyria stepped backward as tears blurred her vision.
"My entire life..."
"I mourned a brother who was never dead."
Kael slowly released the grip on his sword.
Every noble in the room realized they had just witnessed the greatest royal deception in Eldoria's history.
Then an elderly duke suddenly pointed toward the boy.
"He has the royal birthmark."
The boy slowly rolled back his torn sleeve.
A silver phoenix spread across his shoulder.
The symbol of House Vaelor.
Impossible to counterfeit.
One by one...
the nobles knelt.
May you like
Not to the king.
To the forgotten prince.
