Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Barefoot Boy
Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Barefoot Boy
The celebration ended hours later.
Luxury cars disappeared into the night.
But Elias remained outside the ballroom, sitting alone on the stone steps with his small cloth backpack beside him.
Lily's father found him there.
"Where will you sleep tonight?"
Elias shrugged.
"I usually find somewhere."
The father felt his chest tighten.
"You've been alone?"
"For almost three years."
"Social services?"
"I ran away."
"Why?"
The boy looked toward the stars.
"They kept moving me."
"No one wanted to keep me."
For a long moment neither of them spoke.
Then Lily slowly wheeled herself outside.
She had insisted on doing it herself.
When she reached Elias, she reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a tiny silver bracelet.
"My lucky bracelet."
Elias frowned.
"You should keep it."
"I don't need luck anymore."
She smiled.
"I found my courage."
She gently wrapped the bracelet around his wrist.
"I want you to have it."
The father watched the exchange.
In that moment he realized something painful.
His daughter had received every expensive treatment money could buy.
Elias had received almost nothing.
Yet somehow...
He was the richest child there.
Rich in compassion.
Rich in courage.
Rich in love.
The father quietly made a decision.
"You don't have to sleep outside anymore."
Elias looked confused.
"If you'll let us..."
May you like
The man's voice nearly broke.
"...come home."
