Chapter 2: The Safe That Held More Than Secrets Doña Elena closed her eyes and searched her memory. Years earlier, Valeria had laughed while watching Adrián unlock the safe. "He thinks no one notices," she had said. "He always uses Sofía's due date." At the time, Sofía had only been a dream—a daughter they hoped to have someday. Now Elena slowly entered the numbers. The lock clicked. Inside were stacks of legal files, bundles of cash, several encrypted flash drives, and a black notebook filled with handwritten names. Judges. Police commanders. Business executives. Politicians. Each page listed payments, favors, and carefully documented dates. It wasn't simply evidence of corruption. It was an entire network built on intimidation. Then Elena found something that made her hands tremble. A brown envelope labeled: Valeria Cárdenas. Inside were photographs of her daughter's bruises. Medical reports. Draft custody petitions already prepared before the baby was even born. There was even a signed agreement from a private psychiatric consultant stating that Valeria suffered from "emotional instability." The signature had been purchased. Every document had been prepared to destroy her if she ever tried to leave. Elena carefully photographed every page with her phone. She copied the flash drives. Then she quietly returned everything exactly where it had been. Except one item. The black notebook disappeared into her handbag. When she left the house before dawn, thunder echoed over Metepec. For the first time in months, Adrián had no idea someone else now held the weapon that could ruin him. / Chapter 1 / 2 4

Chapter 3: The Man Who Thought He Was Untouchable

Adrián returned home the next afternoon wearing another expensive suit and another victorious smile.

He kissed Valeria on the forehead as though he were the perfect husband.

"You look tired," he said.

She lowered her eyes.

"I didn't sleep well."

He smiled.

"Good. You worry less when you're exhausted."

Before he could say another word, the front doorbell rang.

Then another.

Then another.

The security cameras showed unfamiliar vehicles filling the street.

Federal investigators.

Financial crime agents.

Internal affairs officers.

Television reporters.

Someone knocked loudly.

"Mr. Adrián Cárdenas! Open the door!"

His confident smile vanished.

Minutes later, search warrants covered his dining table.

His office safe was opened in front of investigators.

One officer frowned.

"Interesting."

Another held up a flash drive.

A third quietly opened the black notebook.

Every page matched years of unexplained financial transfers already under investigation.

Adrián turned toward Valeria.

"You did this."

She remained silent.

Then Doña Elena stepped into the doorway.

"No."

"I did."

For the first time in his career, Adrián realized the law he had manipulated for years was finally standing on the other side.

He was handcuffed before sunset.

As cameras followed him outside, none of the politicians who once praised him answered his calls.

Power disappeared much faster than it had been built.
