Chapter 3: The Man Who Thought He Was Untouchable
Adrián returned home the next afternoon wearing another expensive suit and another victorious smile.
He kissed Valeria on the forehead as though he were the perfect husband.
"You look tired," he said.
She lowered her eyes.
"I didn't sleep well."
He smiled.
"Good. You worry less when you're exhausted."
Before he could say another word, the front doorbell rang.
Then another.
Then another.
The security cameras showed unfamiliar vehicles filling the street.
Federal investigators.
Financial crime agents.
Internal affairs officers.
Television reporters.
Someone knocked loudly.
"Mr. Adrián Cárdenas! Open the door!"
His confident smile vanished.
Minutes later, search warrants covered his dining table.
His office safe was opened in front of investigators.
One officer frowned.
"Interesting."
Another held up a flash drive.
A third quietly opened the black notebook.
Every page matched years of unexplained financial transfers already under investigation.
Adrián turned toward Valeria.
"You did this."
She remained silent.
Then Doña Elena stepped into the doorway.
"No."
"I did."
For the first time in his career, Adrián realized the law he had manipulated for years was finally standing on the other side.
He was handcuffed before sunset.
