CHAPTER 2: THE ROOM BENEATH THE CELLAR Leo Rossi barely noticed the cold anymore. His entire world had narrowed to the little girl trembling in his arms. Lily's breathing came in shallow, uneven gasps as Mateo carefully pressed the inhaler to her mouth. After two slow breaths, the wheezing began to ease. Color gradually returned to her pale cheeks. Leo let out the first real breath he had taken since opening the cellar door. "Daddy..." "I'm here," he whispered. "I thought... you forgot me." The words cut deeper than any knife. "I could never forget you." Lily wrapped her tiny arms around his neck, refusing to let go. Behind them, Mateo swept his flashlight around the hidden room. At first glance, it looked like an ordinary child's bedroom. Pink wallpaper decorated the walls. Stuffed animals sat neatly on a shelf. Children's books were arranged beside a small bed. Fresh clothes hung inside a tiny wardrobe. Nothing was covered in dust. Someone had been cleaning this room regularly. "This wasn't built for punishment," Mateo said quietly. "Someone expected her to keep coming back." Leo slowly looked around the room. His eyes stopped on the wall beside the bed. Dozens of short pencil marks had been scratched into the paint. One... Two... Ten... Twenty... He counted silently. One hundred and seventeen. Each mark represented a visit. His daughter hadn't been locked in this room once. She had been brought here one hundred and seventeen different times. A cold rage settled inside him. He had spent years believing his empire was untouchable. Yet someone had been hiding this from him beneath his own home. Mateo opened the bedside drawer. Inside lay stacks of children's drawings. Most showed flowers, butterflies, and smiling stick figures. Then one drawing caught Leo's attention. It showed a little girl standing beside a blonde woman wearing a maid's uniform. Beatrice. Across the room stood a dark-haired woman holding a key. Victoria. Above them, written in uneven crayon letters, were six words. Mommy says Daddy must never know. Leo's grip tightened. He turned to the next page. The smiling woman was gone. Instead, Victoria was pushing the little girl down a staircase. Below the picture, Lily had written another sentence. She says I'm not his daughter. Silence filled the room. Mateo slowly lowered the flashlight. Neither man spoke. Finally, Leo crouched beside Lily. "Sweetheart... who told you that?" Lily stared at the floor. "Mommy Victoria." "Did she bring you here?" A small nod. "Many times." "Why?" "She said I needed to learn to behave." Leo forced himself to remain calm. "Was anyone else here?" Lily hesitated. Then she whispered, "A scary man." "What did he look like?" "He was tall." She frowned, trying to remember. "He always wore black gloves." "Did he hurt you?" She shook her head. "No." Leo almost relaxed. Then she added, "He hurt Miss Beatrice." Mateo looked away. Everything Beatrice had suffered upstairs suddenly made sense. She hadn't been attacked trying to stop Victoria tonight. She had been protecting Lily for a long time. Leo stood. "We're leaving." As Mateo lifted Lily into his arms, a faint electronic sound echoed through the room. Beep... Both men froze. The sound came again. Not from the bedroom. From behind the stone wall opposite the bed. Mateo walked toward it, running his hand across the surface. One section felt different. The mortar was smoother. The stone was newer. "This wall was built later," he said. Leo pressed his ear against it. The beeping continued. Something was hidden behind the wall. Without hesitation, he grabbed an old iron crowbar leaning against the corner. One powerful strike. Stone cracked. Another. Chunks of mortar crashed onto the floor. After several blows, a hole opened large enough for the flashlight beam to pass through. The light revealed something impossible. Concrete. Electrical cables. White-painted walls. This wasn't an ancient cellar. It was a modern room concealed behind centuries-old stone. Leo widened the opening until both men could step inside. The hidden chamber looked like a surveillance center. Computer monitors lined one wall. Metal filing cabinets stood beside medical refrigerators. A backup generator hummed softly in the corner. Everything was powered. Everything was clean. Someone had been here recently. One wall was completely covered with photographs. Hundreds of them. Every picture showed Lily. Sleeping. Playing in the garden. Eating breakfast. Walking through the mansion. Even sitting beside Leo during Christmas dinner. She had been photographed almost every day of her life. Not as family memories. As surveillance. Each photo carried handwritten notes. Subject calm. Respiration stable. Isolation response successful. Leo felt his stomach twist. His daughter had been watched from the day she was born. Mateo pulled open one filing cabinet. Inside were dozens of folders. The first file read: PROJECT LILAC Leo opened it. The first page contained hospital records for an infant identified only as Female A-17. The next pages were filled with blood tests, DNA reports, psychological evaluations, and growth charts. None of them listed parents. Only one signature appeared again and again. Dr. Adrian Keller. "Who is Keller?" Mateo asked. Leo shook his head. "I've never heard the name." Then Mateo found another folder. This one bore a familiar label. Victoria Kensington. Inside were bank transfers totaling millions of dollars. Private meeting schedules. Encrypted messages. One document included a recent photograph. Victoria stood beside an unidentified man wearing a black suit. His face had been partially hidden from the camera. Across the bottom of the page were two words. Phase Three. Before either man could read further, every computer monitor suddenly flickered. The screens turned black. A calm male voice filled the hidden chamber. "Good evening, Mr. Rossi." Leo slowly looked toward the speakers. "I've been expecting you." The voice carried no fear. Only confidence. "You finally opened the right door." The monitors flashed back to life. One sentence appeared across every screen in bright white letters. WELCOME TO THE TRUTH. / Chapter 8 / 14

CHAPTER 9: THE FIRE BELOW

CHAPTER 9: THE FIRE BELOW

Gunfire echoed through the mansion as masked intruders rushed toward the hidden cellar.

They ignored the priceless paintings.

They ignored the vault.

They ignored Leo himself.

There was only one destination.

The laboratory beneath the house.

"They're after the files!" Mateo shouted over his radio.

Leo fired twice.

The lead intruder dropped to the marble floor, but the others kept moving without stopping to help him.

Professionals.

Their mission mattered more than their lives.

Mateo carried Lily toward the panic room while two guards sealed the reinforced steel door behind them.

"Daddy?" Lily cried.

Leo turned just long enough to smile.

"I'll come back."

The door closed.

He hoped he hadn't just made a promise he couldn't keep.

By the time Leo reached the cellar, smoke was already rising through the broken stone wall.

One of the masked men had thrown an incendiary device into the hidden laboratory.

Flames climbed the shelves, swallowing files and computers.

Another intruder emptied gasoline across the floor.

"They're burning everything!" Mateo yelled as he caught up.

Leo charged forward.

The nearest attacker raised his rifle.

A single shot echoed.

The man collapsed before he could pull the trigger.

Leo didn't slow down.

Within seconds, two more attackers were disarmed.

The last survivor threw down his weapon and tried to flee through the tunnel leading to the forest.

Mateo tackled him before he reached the ladder.

The man fought violently.

Then, to everyone's surprise, he bit down on something hidden inside his mouth.

A capsule.

Foam gathered at his lips.

Within seconds, he stopped breathing.

Mateo checked for a pulse.

Nothing.

"Cyanide."

Leo stared at the dead man.

"They expected to be captured."

"No," Mateo corrected.

"They expected to die."

The fire spread rapidly.

Wooden shelves collapsed.

Glass shattered in the heat.

Leo rushed toward the filing cabinets.

Most were already burning.

He pulled open one drawer after another.

Empty.

Someone had removed the most important files before setting the fire.

Only one metal box remained untouched beneath a fallen cabinet.

Leo forced it open.

Inside lay a single VHS tape.

A handwritten label covered the front.

PHASE ONE

Before he could examine it, part of the ceiling collapsed.

Mateo grabbed his arm.

"We have to leave!"

They escaped only seconds before the laboratory disappeared behind a wall of fire.

Outside, firefighters from Leo's private security company quickly brought the blaze under control.

By dawn, the hidden laboratory had become a blackened ruin.

Most of the evidence was gone.

The captain of security approached.

"We counted the attackers."

"How many?"

"Eight."

"And?"

"Seven dead."

Leo looked toward the covered bodies.

"The eighth?"

"Gone."

Someone had escaped during the confusion.

Later that morning, the estate's surveillance team reviewed the attack frame by frame.

One image caught Mateo's attention.

He paused the video.

"Boss."

Leo looked at the screen.

The escaping intruder had briefly turned toward one of the cameras.

His mask had slipped.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Leo recognized the face immediately.

Daniel Brooks.

The gardener they had captured.

"The interrogation room..." Mateo whispered.

Leo nodded.

Daniel had never escaped.

Someone had released him during the blackout.

And now he had helped destroy the laboratory.

Just as the realization settled in, another guard hurried into the room carrying a sealed envelope.

"It was delivered ten minutes ago."

"No messenger?"

The guard shook his head.

"It was hanging on the front gate."

Leo opened it carefully.

Inside was a single photograph.

The image showed Lily asleep in the panic room.

The timestamp was less than thirty minutes old.

Someone had photographed her after the attack.

Beneath the picture was a typed message.

You can protect her from bullets.

Can you protect her from the truth?

Leo slowly folded the note.

Someone inside Rossi Manor was still working for Keller.

The laboratory was gone.

The attackers were dead.

Yet Keller already knew exactly where Lily had been hidden.

Leo looked around the room at every guard, every servant, every familiar face.

For the first time in his life...

May you like

He realized he no longer knew who he could trust.
