CHAPTER 2: THE ROOM BENEATH THE CELLAR Leo Rossi barely noticed the cold anymore. His entire world had narrowed to the little girl trembling in his arms. Lily's breathing came in shallow, uneven gasps as Mateo carefully pressed the inhaler to her mouth. After two slow breaths, the wheezing began to ease. Color gradually returned to her pale cheeks. Leo let out the first real breath he had taken since opening the cellar door. "Daddy..." "I'm here," he whispered. "I thought... you forgot me." The words cut deeper than any knife. "I could never forget you." Lily wrapped her tiny arms around his neck, refusing to let go. Behind them, Mateo swept his flashlight around the hidden room. At first glance, it looked like an ordinary child's bedroom. Pink wallpaper decorated the walls. Stuffed animals sat neatly on a shelf. Children's books were arranged beside a small bed. Fresh clothes hung inside a tiny wardrobe. Nothing was covered in dust. Someone had been cleaning this room regularly. "This wasn't built for punishment," Mateo said quietly. "Someone expected her to keep coming back." Leo slowly looked around the room. His eyes stopped on the wall beside the bed. Dozens of short pencil marks had been scratched into the paint. One... Two... Ten... Twenty... He counted silently. One hundred and seventeen. Each mark represented a visit. His daughter hadn't been locked in this room once. She had been brought here one hundred and seventeen different times. A cold rage settled inside him. He had spent years believing his empire was untouchable. Yet someone had been hiding this from him beneath his own home. Mateo opened the bedside drawer. Inside lay stacks of children's drawings. Most showed flowers, butterflies, and smiling stick figures. Then one drawing caught Leo's attention. It showed a little girl standing beside a blonde woman wearing a maid's uniform. Beatrice. Across the room stood a dark-haired woman holding a key. Victoria. Above them, written in uneven crayon letters, were six words. Mommy says Daddy must never know. Leo's grip tightened. He turned to the next page. The smiling woman was gone. Instead, Victoria was pushing the little girl down a staircase. Below the picture, Lily had written another sentence. She says I'm not his daughter. Silence filled the room. Mateo slowly lowered the flashlight. Neither man spoke. Finally, Leo crouched beside Lily. "Sweetheart... who told you that?" Lily stared at the floor. "Mommy Victoria." "Did she bring you here?" A small nod. "Many times." "Why?" "She said I needed to learn to behave." Leo forced himself to remain calm. "Was anyone else here?" Lily hesitated. Then she whispered, "A scary man." "What did he look like?" "He was tall." She frowned, trying to remember. "He always wore black gloves." "Did he hurt you?" She shook her head. "No." Leo almost relaxed. Then she added, "He hurt Miss Beatrice." Mateo looked away. Everything Beatrice had suffered upstairs suddenly made sense. She hadn't been attacked trying to stop Victoria tonight. She had been protecting Lily for a long time. Leo stood. "We're leaving." As Mateo lifted Lily into his arms, a faint electronic sound echoed through the room. Beep... Both men froze. The sound came again. Not from the bedroom. From behind the stone wall opposite the bed. Mateo walked toward it, running his hand across the surface. One section felt different. The mortar was smoother. The stone was newer. "This wall was built later," he said. Leo pressed his ear against it. The beeping continued. Something was hidden behind the wall. Without hesitation, he grabbed an old iron crowbar leaning against the corner. One powerful strike. Stone cracked. Another. Chunks of mortar crashed onto the floor. After several blows, a hole opened large enough for the flashlight beam to pass through. The light revealed something impossible. Concrete. Electrical cables. White-painted walls. This wasn't an ancient cellar. It was a modern room concealed behind centuries-old stone. Leo widened the opening until both men could step inside. The hidden chamber looked like a surveillance center. Computer monitors lined one wall. Metal filing cabinets stood beside medical refrigerators. A backup generator hummed softly in the corner. Everything was powered. Everything was clean. Someone had been here recently. One wall was completely covered with photographs. Hundreds of them. Every picture showed Lily. Sleeping. Playing in the garden. Eating breakfast. Walking through the mansion. Even sitting beside Leo during Christmas dinner. She had been photographed almost every day of her life. Not as family memories. As surveillance. Each photo carried handwritten notes. Subject calm. Respiration stable. Isolation response successful. Leo felt his stomach twist. His daughter had been watched from the day she was born. Mateo pulled open one filing cabinet. Inside were dozens of folders. The first file read: PROJECT LILAC Leo opened it. The first page contained hospital records for an infant identified only as Female A-17. The next pages were filled with blood tests, DNA reports, psychological evaluations, and growth charts. None of them listed parents. Only one signature appeared again and again. Dr. Adrian Keller. "Who is Keller?" Mateo asked. Leo shook his head. "I've never heard the name." Then Mateo found another folder. This one bore a familiar label. Victoria Kensington. Inside were bank transfers totaling millions of dollars. Private meeting schedules. Encrypted messages. One document included a recent photograph. Victoria stood beside an unidentified man wearing a black suit. His face had been partially hidden from the camera. Across the bottom of the page were two words. Phase Three. Before either man could read further, every computer monitor suddenly flickered. The screens turned black. A calm male voice filled the hidden chamber. "Good evening, Mr. Rossi." Leo slowly looked toward the speakers. "I've been expecting you." The voice carried no fear. Only confidence. "You finally opened the right door." The monitors flashed back to life. One sentence appeared across every screen in bright white letters. WELCOME TO THE TRUTH. / Chapter 11 / 14

CHAPTER 12: ROSE

CHAPTER 12: ROSE

The recording ended with a sharp click.

No one moved.

Leo stood beside the tiny crib, staring at the brass nameplate.

ROSE.

For six years he had believed he had one daughter.

Now he knew there had always been two.

The question was no longer if Rose existed.

It was where she was.

Back in his office, Leo spread every piece of evidence across the table.

Emily's videos.

The birth register.

The laboratory notes.

The DNA report.

One detail suddenly stood out.

Every document referred to Project Lilac.

Except one.

The cassette recording mentioned only the girls' names.

No experiments.

No project.

Just two daughters.

"Keller changed the story," Mateo said.

"He wanted us to focus on the project."

Leo nodded.

"And ignore the family."

Someone had carefully buried the truth beneath layers of lies.

That evening, Lily wandered into the office carrying her stuffed rabbit.

She noticed the photograph of Emily on the desk.

"The flower lady."

Leo looked up.

"You remember her?"

"A little."

Lily frowned.

"I remember another girl, too."

Leo's heart skipped a beat.

"What girl?"

"We played together."

"Where?"

"In the white room."

"The room with the doctor."

Mateo immediately grabbed a notebook.

"What did she look like?"

Lily smiled.

"She looked just like me."

"What was her name?"

Lily thought for several seconds.

Then she whispered,

"Rosie."

Leo exchanged a glance with Mateo.

Children often shortened names.

Rose.

Rosie.

It fit.

"What happened to Rosie?"

Lily's smile disappeared.

"The doctor took her away."

"When?"

"The day we promised to be sisters forever."

Leo felt a lump rise in his throat.

"They already were."

The next morning, one of Leo's intelligence contacts called.

"I found something on Adrian Keller."

Leo put the call on speaker.

"Go on."

"Six years ago..."

"...a private jet left Italy using forged documents."

"It carried one adult."

"And one little girl."

"Destination?"

"No record."

"The flight disappeared after landing in Romania."

Mateo leaned forward.

"The child?"

"The passenger list used a fake name."

"What name?"

The investigator answered quietly.

"Rose Carter."

Leo's pulse quickened.

For the first time, they had a trail.

Before they could discuss it further, the mansion's front gate alarm sounded.

A package had been delivered.

No courier.

No fingerprints.

Just a plain cardboard box.

The bomb squad inspected it first.

Safe.

Leo opened it himself.

Inside was a small pink music box.

Lily gasped.

"Rosie's."

She ran toward it.

Leo stopped her gently.

"Wait."

He opened the lid.

The music box played a soft lullaby.

Hidden beneath the mechanism was a folded photograph.

It showed two little girls sitting together.

Identical.

Both smiling.

One wore a bracelet engraved L.

The other wore one engraved R.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written:

One stayed with the father.

One stayed with me.

No signature was needed.

Keller.

As Leo studied the picture, something else slipped from the box.

A tiny GPS tracker.

Still active.

Mateo immediately crushed it under his boot.

"He wanted to know where we'd take this."

Leo nodded.

"He knows we're following him."

Just then, Lily quietly picked up the photograph.

She touched the face of the second girl.

"That's Rosie."

Then she looked at Leo.

"Daddy..."

"When is she coming home?"

Leo couldn't answer.

Not yet.

But he made himself a silent promise.

Whether Rose was in Romania...

Or anywhere else in the world...

He would find her.

Late that night, long after everyone had gone to bed, Leo's encrypted phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Keller's calm voice returned.

"I see you've met Rose."

Leo remained silent.

"What do you want?"

"I want you to make a choice."

"What choice?"

"You can keep searching for Rose..."

"...or you can protect Lily."

Leo's expression hardened.

"I'll do both."

A soft laugh echoed through the phone.

"You still think this story has a happy ending."

The line went quiet for a moment.

Then Keller spoke one final sentence.

"Check Lily's left shoulder."

The call ended.

Leo stood frozen.

He rushed upstairs to Lily's bedroom.

She was asleep.

Carefully, he pulled back the sleeve of her pajamas.

Just below her shoulder...

Barely visible beneath the skin...

Was a tiny tattoo.

A black lily.

Exactly the same symbol they had found throughout Keller's laboratory.

Leo stared at it in disbelief.

The mark had been there all along.

May you like

Hidden in plain sight.
