CHAPTER 2: THE ROOM BENEATH THE CELLAR Leo Rossi barely noticed the cold anymore. His entire world had narrowed to the little girl trembling in his arms. Lily's breathing came in shallow, uneven gasps as Mateo carefully pressed the inhaler to her mouth. After two slow breaths, the wheezing began to ease. Color gradually returned to her pale cheeks. Leo let out the first real breath he had taken since opening the cellar door. "Daddy..." "I'm here," he whispered. "I thought... you forgot me." The words cut deeper than any knife. "I could never forget you." Lily wrapped her tiny arms around his neck, refusing to let go. Behind them, Mateo swept his flashlight around the hidden room. At first glance, it looked like an ordinary child's bedroom. Pink wallpaper decorated the walls. Stuffed animals sat neatly on a shelf. Children's books were arranged beside a small bed. Fresh clothes hung inside a tiny wardrobe. Nothing was covered in dust. Someone had been cleaning this room regularly. "This wasn't built for punishment," Mateo said quietly. "Someone expected her to keep coming back." Leo slowly looked around the room. His eyes stopped on the wall beside the bed. Dozens of short pencil marks had been scratched into the paint. One... Two... Ten... Twenty... He counted silently. One hundred and seventeen. Each mark represented a visit. His daughter hadn't been locked in this room once. She had been brought here one hundred and seventeen different times. A cold rage settled inside him. He had spent years believing his empire was untouchable. Yet someone had been hiding this from him beneath his own home. Mateo opened the bedside drawer. Inside lay stacks of children's drawings. Most showed flowers, butterflies, and smiling stick figures. Then one drawing caught Leo's attention. It showed a little girl standing beside a blonde woman wearing a maid's uniform. Beatrice. Across the room stood a dark-haired woman holding a key. Victoria. Above them, written in uneven crayon letters, were six words. Mommy says Daddy must never know. Leo's grip tightened. He turned to the next page. The smiling woman was gone. Instead, Victoria was pushing the little girl down a staircase. Below the picture, Lily had written another sentence. She says I'm not his daughter. Silence filled the room. Mateo slowly lowered the flashlight. Neither man spoke. Finally, Leo crouched beside Lily. "Sweetheart... who told you that?" Lily stared at the floor. "Mommy Victoria." "Did she bring you here?" A small nod. "Many times." "Why?" "She said I needed to learn to behave." Leo forced himself to remain calm. "Was anyone else here?" Lily hesitated. Then she whispered, "A scary man." "What did he look like?" "He was tall." She frowned, trying to remember. "He always wore black gloves." "Did he hurt you?" She shook her head. "No." Leo almost relaxed. Then she added, "He hurt Miss Beatrice." Mateo looked away. Everything Beatrice had suffered upstairs suddenly made sense. She hadn't been attacked trying to stop Victoria tonight. She had been protecting Lily for a long time. Leo stood. "We're leaving." As Mateo lifted Lily into his arms, a faint electronic sound echoed through the room. Beep... Both men froze. The sound came again. Not from the bedroom. From behind the stone wall opposite the bed. Mateo walked toward it, running his hand across the surface. One section felt different. The mortar was smoother. The stone was newer. "This wall was built later," he said. Leo pressed his ear against it. The beeping continued. Something was hidden behind the wall. Without hesitation, he grabbed an old iron crowbar leaning against the corner. One powerful strike. Stone cracked. Another. Chunks of mortar crashed onto the floor. After several blows, a hole opened large enough for the flashlight beam to pass through. The light revealed something impossible. Concrete. Electrical cables. White-painted walls. This wasn't an ancient cellar. It was a modern room concealed behind centuries-old stone. Leo widened the opening until both men could step inside. The hidden chamber looked like a surveillance center. Computer monitors lined one wall. Metal filing cabinets stood beside medical refrigerators. A backup generator hummed softly in the corner. Everything was powered. Everything was clean. Someone had been here recently. One wall was completely covered with photographs. Hundreds of them. Every picture showed Lily. Sleeping. Playing in the garden. Eating breakfast. Walking through the mansion. Even sitting beside Leo during Christmas dinner. She had been photographed almost every day of her life. Not as family memories. As surveillance. Each photo carried handwritten notes. Subject calm. Respiration stable. Isolation response successful. Leo felt his stomach twist. His daughter had been watched from the day she was born. Mateo pulled open one filing cabinet. Inside were dozens of folders. The first file read: PROJECT LILAC Leo opened it. The first page contained hospital records for an infant identified only as Female A-17. The next pages were filled with blood tests, DNA reports, psychological evaluations, and growth charts. None of them listed parents. Only one signature appeared again and again. Dr. Adrian Keller. "Who is Keller?" Mateo asked. Leo shook his head. "I've never heard the name." Then Mateo found another folder. This one bore a familiar label. Victoria Kensington. Inside were bank transfers totaling millions of dollars. Private meeting schedules. Encrypted messages. One document included a recent photograph. Victoria stood beside an unidentified man wearing a black suit. His face had been partially hidden from the camera. Across the bottom of the page were two words. Phase Three. Before either man could read further, every computer monitor suddenly flickered. The screens turned black. A calm male voice filled the hidden chamber. "Good evening, Mr. Rossi." Leo slowly looked toward the speakers. "I've been expecting you." The voice carried no fear. Only confidence. "You finally opened the right door." The monitors flashed back to life. One sentence appeared across every screen in bright white letters. WELCOME TO THE TRUTH. / Chapter 12 / 14

CHAPTER 13: THE BLACK LILY

CHAPTER 13: THE BLACK LILY

Leo stared at the tiny black lily on Lily's shoulder.

It was no larger than a coin.

So faint that it looked like a birthmark.

He was certain he had never noticed it before.

Mateo arrived moments later.

"What happened?"

Leo silently pointed to the mark.

Mateo's face tightened.

"The same symbol."

"The laboratory."

"The notebook."

"The letters."

Leo nodded.

"Keller marked her."

The next morning, Leo asked the family's dermatologist to examine Lily.

Without mentioning Keller or the laboratory, he simply asked one question.

"When was this tattoo made?"

The doctor studied it through a magnifying lens.

After several minutes, he looked up.

"This isn't a tattoo."

Leo frowned.

"What is it?"

"It's a tiny medical implant."

Silence filled the room.

"An implant?"

The doctor nodded.

"Placed just beneath the skin."

"It appears inactive."

"But it wasn't made accidentally."

Leo's jaw tightened.

"Can you remove it?"

"I can."

"But I'd recommend an X-ray first."

Within an hour, Lily was taken to a private imaging clinic.

The scan confirmed the doctor's suspicion.

A capsule no larger than a grain of rice rested beneath the skin.

It contained a miniature electronic circuit.

Mateo stared at the image.

"A tracker."

The doctor shook his head.

"No."

"It's too small."

"Then what is it?"

"I don't know."

"I've never seen this design before."

Leo made his decision.

"Remove it."

The procedure lasted only fifteen minutes.

Lily slept peacefully under light anesthesia.

The doctor carefully placed the tiny implant into a sterile container.

The moment it touched the metal tray...

A red light began flashing.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

The entire operating room froze.

The doctor looked confused.

"It wasn't active before."

Mateo reacted instantly.

"Everyone out!"

They evacuated the room.

Thirty seconds later...

The implant released a burst of smoke.

Not an explosion.

Just enough heat to destroy its own electronic components.

Leo stared through the glass.

"It erased itself."

Mateo nodded grimly.

"Keller built a dead man's switch."

Back at Rossi Manor, the security team examined the destroyed implant.

Nothing remained.

No serial numbers.

No manufacturer.

No data.

The evidence had literally burned itself away.

Just then, the communications officer hurried into Leo's office.

"Boss."

"We intercepted a signal."

"What kind?"

"A satellite transmission."

"It activated exactly when the implant failed."

"Can you trace it?"

The officer nodded.

"It lasted only four seconds."

"But we got a location."

He placed a map on the table.

A remote mountain estate in northern Romania.

Leo's eyes narrowed.

"So he's there."

Preparations began immediately.

Within hours, a private jet was ready.

Mateo assembled a small team of trusted guards.

No one else was informed.

If Keller still had spies inside the mansion, Leo wasn't giving them another chance.

Before leaving, Leo visited Lily.

She hugged him tightly.

"Are you going away?"

"For a little while."

"Will you bring Rosie home?"

Leo smiled gently.

"I'll do everything I can."

She reached into her pocket and handed him a folded drawing.

Two little girls stood holding hands.

One was labeled Lily.

The other Rosie.

Above them she had written:

Families belong together.

Leo folded the drawing and slipped it into his jacket.

That night, the jet lifted into the dark sky.

As Rossi Manor disappeared beneath the clouds, Leo studied the map again.

Northern Romania.

A place Keller had hidden for six years.

A place where Rose might still be alive.

But just as the aircraft crossed the Adriatic Sea, the cockpit door opened.

The pilot looked pale.

"Mr. Rossi..."

"What is it?"

"We have a problem."

"What kind?"

The pilot swallowed.

"We're not controlling the navigation anymore."

Every screen inside the cockpit suddenly changed.

A black lily appeared across the displays.

Then Keller's voice filled the cabin.

"Welcome aboard, Mr. Rossi."

"I've been waiting for you."

Leo looked out the cockpit window.

The aircraft was no longer following its original route.

Someone had taken control of the jet from the ground.

May you like

And they were flying straight into Keller's trap.
