CHAPTER 14: THE ISLAND

CHAPTER 14: THE ISLAND
The cockpit alarms echoed through the cabin.
Red warning lights flashed across every screen.
The autopilot had locked itself.
The controls no longer responded.
Mateo rushed into the cockpit.
"Can you disconnect the system?"
The pilot shook his head.
"Nothing works."
"The navigation has been overwritten."
Then Keller's voice returned through the aircraft speakers.
"Relax, Mr. Rossi."
"I have no intention of killing you."
"Not yet."
The transmission ended.
A new flight path appeared on the screen.
It wasn't Romania.
It led to a small island in the Black Sea.
No airport.
Only a private runway.
Leo understood immediately.
"Keller wants us alive."
Three hours later, the jet landed automatically.
No one touched the controls.
The aircraft rolled to a perfect stop in front of an enormous concrete building hidden among pine trees.
The doors opened.
Outside stood nearly twenty armed guards dressed in black.
But none of them raised a weapon.
Instead, they stepped aside.
An invitation.
Leo looked at Mateo.
"It's exactly what he wants."
Mateo loaded his pistol.
"So let's finish it."
Inside, the building looked more like a research center than a fortress.
Bright white corridors.
Security doors.
Medical equipment.
Everything was spotless.
At the end of the main hallway stood a single man.
Dr. Adrian Keller.
He looked older than the newspaper photographs.
Gray hair.
Sharp blue eyes.
A perfectly tailored black suit.
He smiled as Leo approached.
"Mr. Rossi."
Leo stopped only a few feet away.
"Where's my daughter?"
Keller smiled faintly.
"You'll have to be more specific."
Leo's jaw tightened.
"Rose."
Keller nodded.
"I was wondering how long it would take before you said her name."
He stepped aside.
Behind a glass wall was a comfortable room.
A teenage girl wasn't there.
Instead...
A six-year-old girl sat quietly at a table, drawing with colored pencils.
She looked up.
Her face was identical to Lily's.
Leo couldn't breathe.
Rose.
She was alive.
Healthy.
Safe.
The little girl smiled politely.
"Hello."
She had no idea who he was.
Leo instinctively stepped toward the glass.
Rose tilted her head.
"Are you the man in Mommy Emily's pictures?"
Leo's heart nearly stopped.
"You remember Emily?"
She nodded.
"Keller told me she loved me very much."
Leo slowly turned toward Keller.
"You let her believe I abandoned her."
Keller didn't deny it.
"I gave her stability."
"You stole her."
"I saved her."
The two men stared at each other.
Neither blinked.
"Why?" Leo finally asked.
Keller folded his hands behind his back.
"Because six years ago, powerful people funded Project Lilac."
"They wanted perfect children."
"Children whose health, intelligence, and emotional development could be observed from birth."
Leo's eyes narrowed.
"You experimented on them."
"No."
"I observed them."
"You kidnapped infants."
"I protected them."
Leo took one step forward.
"You murdered Emily."
For the first time...
Keller's smile disappeared.
"No."
"I failed to save her."
The words sounded sincere.
Almost.
Keller walked to a nearby table and picked up an old photograph.
It showed Emily holding both newborn twins.
"Lily."
"Rose."
"She refused to choose."
"So someone else chose for her."
Leo looked at the picture.
For the first time, he saw both daughters together.
Emily looked exhausted.
But happy.
Keller placed the photograph into Leo's hands.
"I always intended to reunite them."
Leo looked up sharply.
"Then why all this?"
"Because I needed to know something."
"What?"
Keller looked directly into Leo's eyes.
"If I returned Rose..."
"...would Leo Rossi choose revenge..."
"...or would he choose his daughters?"
The room fell silent.
Leo slowly lowered the photograph.
"You destroyed my family."
Keller nodded once.
"Yes."
"You manipulated my child."
"Yes."
"You murdered innocent people."
Keller hesitated.
"I never ordered Beatrice's death."
Leo raised his pistol.
Mateo and the guards instantly aimed theirs as well.
The room filled with the sound of weapons being cocked.
Keller didn't move.
"I won't stop you."
He calmly spread his arms.
"But if you kill me..."
"...you'll never learn who financed Project Lilac."
Leo's finger rested on the trigger.
Years ago...
He would have fired without hesitation.
Now he looked through the glass at Rose.
She was still drawing.
Completely unaware that her future depended on the next few seconds.
Leo slowly lowered the pistol.
"I'm done letting my daughters lose people they love."
Keller looked genuinely surprised.
For the first time...
He had miscalculated Leo Rossi.
Just then, alarms blared throughout the facility.
A technician burst into the hallway.
"Doctor!"
"Keller Group security has been breached!"
"What?"
"Someone is attacking the island!"
Keller frowned.
"I didn't order any operation."
The technician's face turned white.
"It's not our people..."
"It's the investors."
Keller's expression changed for the first time.
Fear.
Real fear.
He whispered only two words.
May you like
"They found us."
