CHAPTER 2: THE ROOM BENEATH THE CELLAR Leo Rossi barely noticed the cold anymore. His entire world had narrowed to the little girl trembling in his arms. Lily's breathing came in shallow, uneven gasps as Mateo carefully pressed the inhaler to her mouth. After two slow breaths, the wheezing began to ease. Color gradually returned to her pale cheeks. Leo let out the first real breath he had taken since opening the cellar door. "Daddy..." "I'm here," he whispered. "I thought... you forgot me." The words cut deeper than any knife. "I could never forget you." Lily wrapped her tiny arms around his neck, refusing to let go. Behind them, Mateo swept his flashlight around the hidden room. At first glance, it looked like an ordinary child's bedroom. Pink wallpaper decorated the walls. Stuffed animals sat neatly on a shelf. Children's books were arranged beside a small bed. Fresh clothes hung inside a tiny wardrobe. Nothing was covered in dust. Someone had been cleaning this room regularly. "This wasn't built for punishment," Mateo said quietly. "Someone expected her to keep coming back." Leo slowly looked around the room. His eyes stopped on the wall beside the bed. Dozens of short pencil marks had been scratched into the paint. One... Two... Ten... Twenty... He counted silently. One hundred and seventeen. Each mark represented a visit. His daughter hadn't been locked in this room once. She had been brought here one hundred and seventeen different times. A cold rage settled inside him. He had spent years believing his empire was untouchable. Yet someone had been hiding this from him beneath his own home. Mateo opened the bedside drawer. Inside lay stacks of children's drawings. Most showed flowers, butterflies, and smiling stick figures. Then one drawing caught Leo's attention. It showed a little girl standing beside a blonde woman wearing a maid's uniform. Beatrice. Across the room stood a dark-haired woman holding a key. Victoria. Above them, written in uneven crayon letters, were six words. Mommy says Daddy must never know. Leo's grip tightened. He turned to the next page. The smiling woman was gone. Instead, Victoria was pushing the little girl down a staircase. Below the picture, Lily had written another sentence. She says I'm not his daughter. Silence filled the room. Mateo slowly lowered the flashlight. Neither man spoke. Finally, Leo crouched beside Lily. "Sweetheart... who told you that?" Lily stared at the floor. "Mommy Victoria." "Did she bring you here?" A small nod. "Many times." "Why?" "She said I needed to learn to behave." Leo forced himself to remain calm. "Was anyone else here?" Lily hesitated. Then she whispered, "A scary man." "What did he look like?" "He was tall." She frowned, trying to remember. "He always wore black gloves." "Did he hurt you?" She shook her head. "No." Leo almost relaxed. Then she added, "He hurt Miss Beatrice." Mateo looked away. Everything Beatrice had suffered upstairs suddenly made sense. She hadn't been attacked trying to stop Victoria tonight. She had been protecting Lily for a long time. Leo stood. "We're leaving." As Mateo lifted Lily into his arms, a faint electronic sound echoed through the room. Beep... Both men froze. The sound came again. Not from the bedroom. From behind the stone wall opposite the bed. Mateo walked toward it, running his hand across the surface. One section felt different. The mortar was smoother. The stone was newer. "This wall was built later," he said. Leo pressed his ear against it. The beeping continued. Something was hidden behind the wall. Without hesitation, he grabbed an old iron crowbar leaning against the corner. One powerful strike. Stone cracked. Another. Chunks of mortar crashed onto the floor. After several blows, a hole opened large enough for the flashlight beam to pass through. The light revealed something impossible. Concrete. Electrical cables. White-painted walls. This wasn't an ancient cellar. It was a modern room concealed behind centuries-old stone. Leo widened the opening until both men could step inside. The hidden chamber looked like a surveillance center. Computer monitors lined one wall. Metal filing cabinets stood beside medical refrigerators. A backup generator hummed softly in the corner. Everything was powered. Everything was clean. Someone had been here recently. One wall was completely covered with photographs. Hundreds of them. Every picture showed Lily. Sleeping. Playing in the garden. Eating breakfast. Walking through the mansion. Even sitting beside Leo during Christmas dinner. She had been photographed almost every day of her life. Not as family memories. As surveillance. Each photo carried handwritten notes. Subject calm. Respiration stable. Isolation response successful. Leo felt his stomach twist. His daughter had been watched from the day she was born. Mateo pulled open one filing cabinet. Inside were dozens of folders. The first file read: PROJECT LILAC Leo opened it. The first page contained hospital records for an infant identified only as Female A-17. The next pages were filled with blood tests, DNA reports, psychological evaluations, and growth charts. None of them listed parents. Only one signature appeared again and again. Dr. Adrian Keller. "Who is Keller?" Mateo asked. Leo shook his head. "I've never heard the name." Then Mateo found another folder. This one bore a familiar label. Victoria Kensington. Inside were bank transfers totaling millions of dollars. Private meeting schedules. Encrypted messages. One document included a recent photograph. Victoria stood beside an unidentified man wearing a black suit. His face had been partially hidden from the camera. Across the bottom of the page were two words. Phase Three. Before either man could read further, every computer monitor suddenly flickered. The screens turned black. A calm male voice filled the hidden chamber. "Good evening, Mr. Rossi." Leo slowly looked toward the speakers. "I've been expecting you." The voice carried no fear. Only confidence. "You finally opened the right door." The monitors flashed back to life. One sentence appeared across every screen in bright white letters. WELCOME TO THE TRUTH. / Chapter 4 / 14

CHAPTER 5: THE FLASH DRIVE

CHAPTER 5: THE FLASH DRIVE

The interrogation room sat beneath the west wing of Rossi Manor.

Unlike the hidden cellar, Leo knew every inch of this place.

Concrete walls.

A single steel table.

Two chairs.

One security camera.

No windows.

The captured gardener sat handcuffed under the harsh white lights, his clothes still damp from the rain outside.

He couldn't have been older than thirty.

His name was Daniel Brooks.

He had worked at the estate for only eight months.

Leo entered alone.

The steel door closed behind him.

Daniel refused to meet his eyes.

Leo placed Beatrice's bloodstained flash drive on the table.

"You tried to run."

Daniel swallowed.

"I was scared."

"Of me?"

A long silence.

Finally, Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"Then who?"

Daniel's hands began to tremble.

"You wouldn't believe me."

Leo leaned forward.

"Try me."

The young gardener took a slow breath.

"I never worked for Victoria."

"I worked for Dr. Keller."

Leo's expression remained calm, though the name struck him immediately.

"What was your job?"

"To report."

"Report what?"

"Lily."

Every word felt heavier than the last.

"I sent weekly updates."

"Health."

"School."

"Friends."

"Everything."

Leo stared at him.

"For how long?"

"Since I was hired."

"And before you?"

"There was someone else."

"So every employee around my daughter..."

"...was planted?"

Daniel lowered his head.

"I don't know."

"I only know my assignment."

Leo reached into his pocket and laid the necklace with the silver V pendant on the table.

"Where is Victoria?"

Daniel looked genuinely confused.

"I don't know."

"When did you last speak to her?"

"This afternoon."

"What did she say?"

"Only one sentence."

Leo waited.

Daniel whispered,

"'Tonight everything changes.'"

The room fell silent.

Leo studied the man's face.

He saw fear.

Real fear.

Not the fear of punishment.

The fear of someone else.

Someone far more dangerous.

A knock interrupted the interrogation.

Mateo stepped inside carrying a laptop.

"We recovered the files."

Leo stood.

"The flash drive?"

Mateo nodded.

"You need to see this."

Minutes later they were inside Leo's private office.

The flash drive contained hundreds of encrypted folders.

Most opened only after entering a long password hidden inside the drive itself.

The first folder was labeled:

LILY - ORIGINAL RECORDS

Leo clicked.

Hospital files appeared on the screen.

Birth records.

Medical scans.

Blood tests.

One document caught his attention immediately.

Mother: Emily Carter

Father: Leo Rossi

Leo stopped breathing.

Victoria's name appeared nowhere.

Mateo quietly broke the silence.

"Victoria was never Lily's mother."

Leo nodded slowly.

He had suspected it.

Now he had proof.

Another folder opened automatically.

A video file.

Recorded six years earlier.

The image shook as someone adjusted the camera.

Then a young woman appeared.

Blonde hair.

Gentle smile.

The same woman from the photographs.

Emily Carter.

She looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

She hesitated, fighting back tears.

"...then something happened to me."

Leo felt his chest tighten.

Emily continued.

"Leo..."

"I know you probably hate me."

"But I never stopped loving you."

She looked down for a moment before lifting a sleeping newborn into her arms.

Tiny Lily.

"If they take her..."

"...don't let them raise her."

"They'll turn her into..."

The recording suddenly distorted.

Static covered the screen.

The audio cut in and out.

When the picture returned, Emily was crying.

"They already have people inside your house."

"They're closer than you think."

The image froze.

Then went black.

The video ended.

Neither Leo nor Mateo spoke.

After nearly a minute, Mateo asked quietly,

"Who is 'they'?"

Leo had no answer.

He opened the next folder.

A scanned newspaper article filled the screen.

SCIENTIST ADRIAN KELLER MISSING AFTER ILLEGAL HUMAN RESEARCH INVESTIGATION

The article was six years old.

Authorities believed Keller had died in a laboratory fire.

His body had never been found.

Mateo frowned.

"So everyone thought he was dead."

Leo looked toward the hidden laboratory beneath the cellar.

"He wanted them to."

At that moment, Leo's phone rang.

It was the captain of security.

"Boss."

"What is it?"

"We searched Victoria's bedroom."

"And?"

"We found a hidden safe."

Leo stood.

"What was inside?"

"Nothing."

A pause.

"Except one photograph."

"What photograph?"

The captain's voice grew quieter.

"It was taken yesterday."

Leo's heart skipped a beat.

"Yesterday?"

"Yes."

"The picture shows Lily..."

Another pause.

"...standing beside Dr. Adrian Keller."

Silence filled the office.

Leo slowly lowered the phone.

If the photograph had been taken yesterday...

Then Keller hadn't been hiding far away.

May you like

He had already been inside Rossi Manor.
