Chapter 2: The River’s Secret

That night, Ethan locked the ballroom and brought Isabella into his private study.

Lucas refused to let go of her hand.

"I thought I buried you," Ethan said quietly.

"You buried an empty coffin," Isabella replied. "The police never found my body. They only found the car."

She placed another item on the desk: a silver bracelet twisted from the crash.

"I found this tangled in the guardrail when I returned to the bridge last week."

Ethan recognized it instantly. He had given it to Victoria six months after Isabella’s death.

His stomach turned cold.

"Why was her bracelet there?"

"Because she was there."

Before Ethan could respond, the study door burst open. Victoria stood trembling in the doorway.

"You don’t understand!" she cried. "I went to meet Isabella that night, but I didn’t kill her."

"Then who did?" Ethan demanded.

Victoria’s eyes darted toward the hallway, toward the security cameras, toward the dark corners of the mansion.

"Your brother."

Ethan froze.

"Daniel?"

"He said the company would collapse if Isabella exposed the fraud. He followed us to the bridge. We argued. Then he pushed the car."

Isabella stared at her.

"Why didn’t you tell the police?"

Victoria began to cry silently.

"Because he threatened to destroy my family. And because after you disappeared… Ethan needed someone. I convinced myself you were dead."

Footsteps echoed in the hallway.

Daniel Whitmore was coming upstairs.
