Chapter 2: The Man Isabel Feared The phone continued to ring. Neither Matthew nor Elena moved. Finally, Matthew answered. He didn't greet the caller. He simply listened. On the other end, Isabel Vargas' voice was perfectly composed, as though she were discussing a delayed shipment instead of a missing woman. "Matthew," she said softly. "You've picked up something that belongs to me." Matthew looked at Elena. "No," he replied. "She never did." Silence. Then Isabel laughed. "You always did enjoy making things difficult." Matthew ended the call without another word. Elena stared at him. "You know her." "I do." "Who are you?" Matthew leaned back in his seat. "Someone your stepmother has spent twenty years trying to avoid." The SUV behind them accelerated. Matthew spoke calmly to the driver. "Take Route Nine." The sedan suddenly turned off the highway onto a narrow road winding through abandoned factories. The pursuing SUV followed immediately. "They're not giving up," Elena whispered. "They won't." "Why?" Matthew looked directly at her. "Because tonight wasn't about selling you." She frowned. "It was about making sure you never learned who you really are." Those words struck harder than Isabel's slap. "What do you mean?" Before Matthew could answer, the SUV rammed the back of the sedan. The impact threw Elena sideways. Glass rattled. The driver fought to keep control. Matthew remained astonishingly calm. "Keep driving." Another hit. Closer this time. Then, in the distance... Massive iron gates slowly opened. The sedan shot inside. The gates slammed shut only seconds before the SUV reached them, crashing violently into solid steel. For the first time that night... Matthew smiled. Very slightly. "They can't follow us here." / Chapter 1 / 2

Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden in the Safe

The estate beyond the gates looked nothing like the Vargas mansion.

There were no marble statues.

No extravagant fountains.

Only quiet stone buildings protected by armed security.

Everyone bowed as Matthew stepped from the car.

No one asked about Elena.

As though they had been expecting her.

Inside his private office, Matthew unlocked an antique safe hidden behind a painting.

He removed a single leather folder.

Across the front was one name.

ELENA MARIE CARRANZA.

Her hands froze.

"That's impossible."

Matthew opened the file.

Inside were hospital records.

Birth certificates.

Newspaper clippings.

Old photographs.

One photograph made Elena stop breathing.

A young woman held a newborn baby.

Standing beside her...

A much younger Matthew.

His arm wrapped protectively around both of them.

The woman smiled.

She looked exactly like Elena.

"My mother..."

Matthew nodded.

"Her name was Sofia."

"You knew her."

"I loved her."

Elena looked up.

"You... were having an affair with my mother?"

Matthew shook his head.

"No."

He closed the folder.

"I was supposed to marry her."

The room fell silent.

"Then why did she marry my father?"

"She didn't."

Matthew's voice became almost emotionless.

"She disappeared the week before our wedding."

"And twenty-four years later..."

He looked straight into Elena's eyes.

"...you appeared in Isabel Vargas' house."

Elena felt the floor vanish beneath her.

"If Sofia wasn't my father's wife..."

She could barely whisper the next question.

"Then who am I?"

Matthew didn't answer.

Instead, he handed her a DNA report.
