Chapter 3: The Secret Olivia Never Knew

Chapter 3: The Secret Olivia Never Knew
Daniel spent the next hour trying to explain the money.
Each explanation collapsed faster than the last.
The judge wasn't convinced.
Neither was anyone else.
But Olivia still looked confused.
She leaned toward him.
"Daniel..."
"What money?"
He refused to meet her eyes.
That was all the answer she needed.
My attorney stood again.
"There's one final document, Your Honor."
He handed a sealed envelope to the judge.
The judge read it carefully.
Then looked directly at Daniel.
"Is this authentic?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
"...Yes."
Olivia grabbed his arm.
"What is it?"
No one answered.
Finally the judge looked toward me.
"Mrs. Carter... you may explain."
I took a slow breath.
"Three months before Daniel asked for this divorce..."
"...he changed his will."
Olivia smiled.
"I already know that."
"You think you do."
Her smile faded.
I continued.
"The version he showed you wasn't the version he filed."
Silence.
"The legal version states that if Daniel is found guilty of intentionally hiding marital assets..."
"...every amendment naming a future spouse becomes automatically void."
Olivia stared at Daniel.
"You told me everything would belong to us."
Daniel whispered,
"I thought it would."
"You lied."
"No..."
"I was wrong."
"No," she snapped.
"You lied."
For the first time since I'd known her...
Olivia looked terrified.
She hadn't fallen in love with Daniel.
She had fallen in love with the life she believed he owned.
And that life had just disappeared.
She slowly removed the engagement ring from her finger.
Placed it on the table.
Then walked away without looking back.
Daniel called after her.
"Olivia!"
She never turned around.
