Chapter 2: The Truth She Never Told

Chapter 2: The Truth She Never Told

The attorney quietly handed me another document.

"I wasn't supposed to give you this unless you finished the letters."

It was a bank statement.

Not Evelyn's.

Mine.

Over the past two years, someone had anonymously paid off thousands of dollars of my debt.

Every missed loan payment...

Every overdue credit card...

Every collection notice...

Gone.

I stared at him.

"Who did this?"

He answered softly.

"Evelyn."

I couldn't speak.

"She knew you'd never accept help if you knew it came from her."

My knees nearly gave out.

The attorney reached into his briefcase one final time.

"This belonged to her."

It was an old video recorder.

When I pressed play, Evelyn appeared sitting in her favorite chair.

She looked tired.

But she smiled.

"Daniel..."

"If you're watching this, then I never got the chance to tell you goodbye."

She paused before continuing.

"I never wanted to leave you rich."

"I wanted to leave you free."

Then her smile faded.

"But freedom only matters if you choose to become someone worth freeing."

The screen went black.

May you like

For the first time in my life...

I cried without trying to stop.
