PART 3

PART 3
No one spoke.
Katherine slowly walked back into the bedroom.
Her hands were still trembling.
"You've hated me for three years..."
"...because you believed a lie."
Caleb laughed bitterly.
"A lie?"
"I saw the police report."
"I saw your name."
"You stood outside the courthouse smiling."
Katherine's eyes filled with tears.
"Because they had just cleared me."
"I wasn't celebrating."
"I was relieved that they finally believed me."
Grace stepped closer.
"Then tell us."
"What really happened?"
Katherine swallowed hard.
"I wasn't driving."
Caleb's face hardened.
"Stop."
"You expect us to believe that?"
"I was in the passenger seat."
Silence.
"My older sister..."
"...Olivia..."
"...was driving."
Robert frowned.
"The report listed only you."
"Because Olivia disappeared."
Katherine slowly removed a silver necklace from beneath her dress.
Inside was a tiny photograph.
Two identical young women smiled at the camera.
Twins.
Grace stared.
"You have a twin sister?"
Katherine nodded.
"After the accident..."
"Olivia panicked."
"She ran."
"Our father begged me to protect her."
"He said she had two little children."
"I took the blame."
Caleb's breathing became uneven.
"You're lying."
"I wish I were."
Katherine pulled another folded document from the envelope she had carried all evening.
"This is why I came to the wedding."
"I was finally going to tell you everything."
Grace unfolded the paper.
It was a handwritten confession.
Signed...
Olivia Bennett.
Robert whispered,
"My God..."
Caleb grabbed the confession.
His hands shook violently.
Then he noticed the date.
Yesterday.
He stared at Katherine.
"You already knew?"
She nodded.
"I wanted to tell you after the ceremony."
"I was afraid."
"I thought if I told you before..."
"...you'd never marry me."
Caleb slowly backed away.
Everything he had believed...
Every ounce of hatred...
Suddenly began to collapse.
Then his phone vibrated.
One message.
May you like
Unknown number.
Too late. She'll never testify.
