Chapter 2: The Promise Beneath the Rain
Chapter 1: The Name He Had Forgotten
The man lowered his head, unable to answer.
The little girl stood quietly in front of him, waiting with the same patience she had shown while offering the bread.
Finally, he whispered, "Because... I forgot people could still be kind."
She blinked. "How can someone forget that?"
He gave a broken laugh.
"When life hurts you long enough, you start believing kindness only happens in stories."
The little girl sat beside him on the cold sidewalk without hesitation.
"My name is Lily," she said.
He looked at her.
"Lily..."
"What about you?"
The question caught him off guard.
His fingers tightened around the small piece of bread.
He had been called many things over the past few months. Beggar. Drunk. Useless. Burden.
People had stopped asking his name.
For a moment, he struggled to remember the person he used to be.
"...Daniel," he finally replied.
Lily smiled brightly.
"Nice to meet you, Mr. Daniel."
No disgust.
No pity.
Just a simple introduction.
As if he mattered.
As if he still belonged to the world.
Before leaving, Lily reached into her tiny pocket and pulled out a folded napkin.
Inside was a crayon drawing.
A house.
A tree.
Three smiling stick figures holding hands beneath a yellow sun.
"My mom says people are like windows," Lily explained. "Sometimes dirt covers them so much that they can't see the light anymore. But the light is still there."
She placed the drawing into Daniel's hands.
"Don't forget again."

Daniel watched her walk away with her mother disappearing into the crowd.
For the first time in months, he carefully unfolded the picture instead of throwing it away.
