Chapter 2: The Promise Beneath the Rain

The following morning, Daniel woke before sunrise.
He stared at Lily's drawing until the edges softened from being held too often.
He remembered another drawing.
Years ago, his own daughter had loved using crayons.
But after losing his wife in an accident, grief swallowed everything.
He pushed people away.
Lost his job.
Lost his home.
Eventually, he lost contact with the daughter who had once called him her hero.
Daniel slowly stood up.
For the first time, he decided to try.
A nearby shelter offered clean clothes and temporary work opportunities.
The process was humiliating.
Some people doubted him.
Others dismissed him.
But whenever he wanted to quit, he remembered Lily's voice.
"Don't forget again."
Weeks turned into months.
He swept floors.
Carried boxes.
Washed dishes.
Saved every coin he earned.
One rainy evening, while organizing donated books at the shelter, Daniel found an old telephone directory containing information that led him to someone he had searched for only in his memories.
His daughter.
Emma.
His hands shook harder than they had on that cold sidewalk.
He wrote her a letter.
Not to ask for forgiveness.
Not to demand another chance.
Only to say:
"I am trying to become someone worthy of meeting you again."
May you like
Then he mailed it into the storm.
And waited.
