CHAPTER 3 — The Wife Who Knew Nothing
CHAPTER 3 — The Wife Who Knew Nothing
Julian tried to leave.
Two investigators blocked the stairs.
"I have lawyers."
"You'll need them," one replied.
Guests who had spent years chasing Julian's approval now slowly stepped away from him.
No one wanted to be seen standing beside a man under federal investigation.
Evelyn remained frozen.
She wasn't thinking about the fraud.
She was thinking about something much smaller.
Something much crueler.
Twenty-two years.
Not once had Julian ever thanked her.
Not once had he introduced her as his partner.
She had quietly raised their daughter while he traveled.
She had hosted every fundraiser.
Balanced every household account.
Remembered every anniversary.
Protected every secret.
Yet tonight...
He had offered her to strangers for ten dollars.
Alexander noticed the tears she refused to let fall.
"You don't deserve this."
She looked at him carefully.
"Do I know you?"
He smiled sadly.
"You used to."
Confusion crossed her face.
Alexander removed an old photograph from his wallet.
The edges had faded with time.
In it...
A teenage Evelyn stood between two smiling young men.
One was Julian.
The other was Alexander.
She stared at the picture.
Then memories she hadn't visited in decades slowly returned.
College.
Business school.
Three inseparable friends.
Until Alexander suddenly disappeared.
Julian had told her Alexander betrayed them both.
She had believed him.
Alexander sighed.
"I didn't disappear."
"I was forced out."
Julian shouted from across the ballroom.
"Don't listen to him!"
Alexander ignored him.
"I wrote you thirty-seven letters."
"They were all returned unopened."
Evelyn's heart stopped.
"I never received any letters."
Alexander slowly looked at Julian.
"He made sure you never would."
The room fell silent once again.
Julian's eyes betrayed him.
For the first time that evening...
He had no lie ready.
Then Evelyn whispered something that cut deeper than any accusation.
"You stole twenty-two years from both of us."
Julian opened his mouth.
But before he could answer...
A young woman burst through the ballroom doors.
"Dad!"
Everyone turned.
It was Julian and Evelyn's daughter.
She wasn't alone.
