CHAPTER 2 — The Man Julian Never Wanted to See Again No one applauded. No one laughed. The ballroom became so quiet that the faint hum of the crystal chandeliers seemed deafening. The stranger walked toward the stage with measured steps, each one echoing across the polished marble floor. He wasn't in a tuxedo covered with medals or surrounded by bodyguards. He carried himself like someone who had never needed either. Julian's confident grin disappeared. His fingers tightened around the microphone until his knuckles turned white. "...You." The single word escaped before he could stop it. The stranger looked at him without emotion. "It's been a long time, Julian." Several guests exchanged confused glances. They had expected an angry billionaire. Instead, they saw two men who clearly shared a dangerous history. Julian forced out a laugh. "Everyone, this is just an old acquaintance." "No," the stranger replied calmly. "I'm your former business partner." A ripple spread through the audience. Former partner? Julian had always claimed he built Carter Foundation and Carter Holdings from nothing. The stranger reached into his jacket and placed an old leather folder onto the auction podium. "I helped build your first company." "You stole it." Gasps filled the room. Julian immediately grabbed the folder. "These are fake." "They're originals." The stranger never raised his voice. "Every contract still bears your signature." Julian's face lost its color. Evelyn stared at the folder. Twenty-two years of marriage... Yet she had never heard this man's name. One elderly donor slowly stood. "I remember him." Another donor nodded. "My God..." "His name is Alexander Hayes." Several people suddenly recognized him. Alexander Hayes. The brilliant entrepreneur who had mysteriously vanished over twenty years earlier after selling his shares. Or so everyone believed. Alexander calmly looked toward Evelyn. "I didn't bid on a woman." "I bid for the truth." Julian interrupted angrily. "Security!" No one moved. Instead... Three men wearing dark suits entered through the ballroom doors. Not security. Federal investigators. One of them walked directly toward Julian. "Mr. Carter." "We have several questions regarding financial fraud." The ballroom exploded into whispers. Julian looked at Alexander with hatred. "You planned this." Alexander answered quietly. "No." "You planned it yourself twenty-two years ago." Then one investigator opened the leather folder. The first page revealed a signature. Julian Carter. Forged beneath it... Alexander Hayes. And suddenly everyone understood. The charity gala had never been the real event. It had been the stage. / Chapter 1 / 2 405

CHAPTER 3 — The Wife Who Knew Nothing

CHAPTER 3 — The Wife Who Knew Nothing

Julian tried to leave.

Two investigators blocked the stairs.

"I have lawyers."

"You'll need them," one replied.

Guests who had spent years chasing Julian's approval now slowly stepped away from him.

No one wanted to be seen standing beside a man under federal investigation.

Evelyn remained frozen.

She wasn't thinking about the fraud.

She was thinking about something much smaller.

Something much crueler.

Twenty-two years.

Not once had Julian ever thanked her.

Not once had he introduced her as his partner.

She had quietly raised their daughter while he traveled.

She had hosted every fundraiser.

Balanced every household account.

Remembered every anniversary.

Protected every secret.

Yet tonight...

He had offered her to strangers for ten dollars.

Alexander noticed the tears she refused to let fall.

"You don't deserve this."

She looked at him carefully.

"Do I know you?"

He smiled sadly.

"You used to."

Confusion crossed her face.

Alexander removed an old photograph from his wallet.

The edges had faded with time.

In it...

A teenage Evelyn stood between two smiling young men.

One was Julian.

The other was Alexander.

She stared at the picture.

Then memories she hadn't visited in decades slowly returned.

College.

Business school.

Three inseparable friends.

Until Alexander suddenly disappeared.

Julian had told her Alexander betrayed them both.

She had believed him.

Alexander sighed.

"I didn't disappear."

"I was forced out."

Julian shouted from across the ballroom.

"Don't listen to him!"

Alexander ignored him.

"I wrote you thirty-seven letters."

"They were all returned unopened."

Evelyn's heart stopped.

"I never received any letters."

Alexander slowly looked at Julian.

"He made sure you never would."

The room fell silent once again.

Julian's eyes betrayed him.

For the first time that evening...

He had no lie ready.

Then Evelyn whispered something that cut deeper than any accusation.

"You stole twenty-two years from both of us."

Julian opened his mouth.

But before he could answer...

A young woman burst through the ballroom doors.

"Dad!"

Everyone turned.

It was Julian and Evelyn's daughter.

She wasn't alone.
