CHAPTER 2 — The Locked Truth
The cemetery erupted into chaos.
“Open it,” the judge ordered, voice sharp now.
“No!” the stepmother snapped too quickly.
All eyes turned to her.
She forced a calmer tone. “This is disrespectful to the dead.”
But the judge was already stepping forward.
The coffin was unsealed.
The wood creaked as the lid was lifted.
For a moment, nothing moved.
Then—
A fragile gasp.
A young girl lay inside, pale, barely conscious, her fingers twitching weakly against the satin lining.
Gasps tore through the mourners.
“She’s alive…” someone whispered.
The judge stumbled back like he had been struck.
The boy rushed forward, tears flooding his face.
“I told you,” he cried. “I told you!”
The girl’s lips moved faintly.
“Dad…?”
The world stopped.
But in the crowd, the stepmother quietly stepped backward.
