CHAPTER 2 THE FIRST LIE I used to believe the truth was something people gave you. A confession. An apology. A moment of honesty when someone finally decided you deserved to know. I was wrong. The truth is something you take back. Piece by piece. From the places people tried to hide it. And Julian had hidden a lot. The next morning, I woke up before sunrise. Not because I couldn't sleep. Because I had stopped wanting to. For fourteen months, I had spent countless nights staring at the ceiling, wondering if Julian was safe. Wondering if he was eating enough. Wondering if he missed me. I had imagined him looking at the same moon from another country, thinking about coming home to me. Now I knew. Maybe he had been looking at the moon. Maybe he had even missed home. But I wasn't the only person he was dreaming about. I walked into the kitchen and saw the empty coffee cup on the counter. Julian's cup. He had come home late last night. I didn't hear him enter. I didn't hear him leave. The apartment felt like a hotel room shared by two strangers. Then I noticed something. A piece of paper on the counter. My heart stopped. For a second, I thought it was a letter. An explanation. Something from the husband I remembered. But it wasn't. It was a grocery list. Milk. Bread. Coffee. Normal things. Almost insulting. After everything that happened, Julian could still wake up and think about buying groceries. Like our world wasn't falling apart. I grabbed my phone. No new messages. No apology. No explanation. Nothing. Just silence. That silence told me more than words could. Julian wasn't confused. He wasn't desperately trying to fix things. He was waiting. Waiting to see what I knew. Waiting to decide what version of the truth he would tell me. So I did something unexpected. I smiled. Because now I understood the game. And I was done playing by his rules. At 9:15 a.m., Julian finally came home. I heard the key turn. The old Elena would have rushed to the door. She would have hugged him. She would have checked his face for injuries. She would have cried because he was finally home. Instead, I sat at the dining table with two cups of coffee. One for me. One for him. Julian stepped inside. For a moment, he looked exactly like the man I married. The same tired eyes. The same familiar smile. The same voice. "Elena." I looked up. "Julian." The way he said my name used to make me feel safe. Now it sounded like a stranger trying to open a locked door. He put his bag down. "You didn't sleep?" "I did." He looked at me carefully. "No, you didn't." Interesting. He could still read me. After all these years. But apparently he couldn't remember how to protect me. "I wanted to talk about yesterday," he said. I lifted my coffee. "Okay." He sat across from me. His hands were nervous. That was the first thing I noticed. Julian was a soldier. A man who had faced danger. A man who had been trained to stay calm under pressure. But sitting across from his wife? His fingers kept moving. His eyes kept avoiding mine. "Priya is..." He stopped. I waited. This was the moment. The moment where he would decide who he wanted to be. Honest Julian. Or the man who betrayed me. "She's someone I know from overseas." I almost laughed. Almost. Because that sentence was so carefully prepared. Someone I know. Not someone I love. Not someone important. Not someone I've been seeing. Just someone. A tiny word designed to make a huge betrayal disappear. "How long have you known her?" His eyes moved to mine. "Elena..." "How long?" A pause. "About six months." Six months. There it was. The first lie. Because I knew about eight months. Maybe more. But I didn't correct him. Not yet. I leaned back. "Six months?" "Yes." "Interesting." His face changed slightly. "What does that mean?" I looked at him. "Nothing." But it meant everything. Because now I knew. Julian wasn't going to tell me the truth. Not unless he had to. "She was going through a difficult time," he continued. "I helped her." I nodded slowly. "You helped her." "Yes." "And that's why she hugged you like she hadn't seen you in years?" His jaw tightened. "Elena, you're misunderstanding." That sentence. That sentence almost made me angry. Because cheaters always had the same talent. They didn't just hurt you. They made you question whether you had the right to be hurt. "What am I misunderstanding?" He looked away. "I didn't expect her to come to the airport." Another lie. Small. Careful. But still a lie. Because Priya didn't look surprised. She looked like someone waiting for the person she loved. "I need you to trust me," Julian said. The words hit harder than I expected. Trust. A word he was asking me to give after destroying it. I stared at my wedding ring. Then slowly removed it from my finger. Julian noticed. His expression changed. "Elena..." I placed the ring on the table. Not dramatically. Not angrily. Just calmly. Like I was putting down something that had become too heavy. "You want me to trust you." My voice was quiet. "So tell me something, Julian." He swallowed. "What?" I looked directly into his eyes. "Why did Priya know exactly where you would be standing at the airport?" Silence. A long one. The kind that reveals things people try to hide. His face lost color. For the first time since he walked through the door... Julian looked afraid. Not angry. Not defensive. Afraid. And that told me I had asked the right question. "Elena..." "No." I raised my hand. "I don't want excuses." He stared at me. "Then what do you want?" I looked at the man I once thought was my forever. "I want the truth." His phone suddenly rang. Neither of us moved. The screen lit up on the table between us. A name appeared. Priya. Julian reached for it immediately. Too quickly. Like his body reacted before his brain could stop it. I noticed. And so did he. Slowly, he placed the phone face down. "I'll handle this later." I smiled. Because there it was. The proof I needed. Not a confession. Not a message. Not a photograph. A reaction. A husband who cared more about hiding another woman than comforting his wife. "Go ahead," I said. He looked confused. "What?" "Answer it." His eyes widened. "Elena..." "Answer the phone." He didn't. And that silence was louder than anything he could have said. A few seconds later, the phone stopped ringing. Then another notification appeared. This time, I saw the preview. Only six words. But six words were enough. "She knows everything. We need to talk." Julian froze. My heart stopped. Because suddenly I wasn't just investigating an affair. I was uncovering something bigger. Something Julian and Priya were both afraid of. I looked at him. "Who knows everything?" He didn't answer. And for the first time in six years... I saw fear in my husband's eyes. Not fear of losing me. Fear of losing something else. Something much bigger. Something he had been hiding. I picked up my coffee and took a slow sip. Because now I knew. Priya wasn't the only secret in my marriage. She was just the first one I found. And whatever Julian was protecting... was the reason he had been lying to me from the beginning. CHAPTER 8 THE TRUTH ABOUT THAT NIGHT

CHAPTER 8

THE TRUTH ABOUT THAT NIGHT

The human mind has a strange way of protecting itself.

When something is too painful, it searches for another explanation.

A mistake.

A misunderstanding.

Anything that hurts less than the truth.

For years, I had done that with Julian.

Every cold phone call.

Every forgotten promise.

Every moment when I felt him slipping away.

I found excuses.

He was tired.

He was stressed.

He was under pressure.

I had built a thousand explanations to protect the man I loved.

But now?

I had no excuses left.

Because Priya's message was sitting right in front of me.

"Julian didn't save me from danger."

"He saved me from him."

I looked at my husband.

Waiting.

Demanding an answer without saying a word.

For the first time in six years, I didn't know if I was looking at my protector...

or my greatest threat.

"Tell me she's lying."

My voice was quiet.

Almost a whisper.

Julian didn't answer.

And that silence destroyed something inside me.

"Tell me."

His eyes moved toward mine.

"Elena..."

"No."

I stepped back.

"Don't say my name."

The pain on his face was real.

But I couldn't let that distract me anymore.

Not now.

Not after everything.

"Tell me Priya is lying."

Julian opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

A soldier.

A man trained to make decisions in seconds.

A man who could face impossible situations.

But standing in front of me...

he couldn't say one simple sentence.

That was my answer.

Daniel watched us silently.

Finally, he spoke.

"Julian."

My husband looked at him.

"You need to tell her."

Julian's expression hardened.

"You don't understand."

"No."

Daniel stepped closer.

"I understand exactly."

There was anger between them.

Old anger.

The kind that doesn't come from one argument.

The kind that comes from years of carrying secrets.

"You promised Marcus."

Julian froze.

I noticed.

"Who is Marcus to you?"

Daniel looked at Julian.

"He was the reason we are still alive."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Marcus discovered someone inside the operation was selling information."

"To who?"

"We don't know."

"Then why was he killed?"

Nobody answered.

Again.

Another locked door.

Another secret.

I turned toward Julian.

"How many more?"

He looked at me.

"What?"

"How many more things don't I know?"

My voice became stronger.

"One secret? Ten secrets? An entire life?"

Julian looked away.

And that hurt.

Because I realized something.

I wasn't discovering a new side of my husband.

I was discovering how much of him had always been hidden.

An hour later, Julian finally agreed to talk.

Not at the apartment.

Not at the abandoned building.

Somewhere neutral.

A quiet park outside the city.

The same park where we had our first date.

The irony wasn't lost on me.

Six years ago, this place represented the beginning.

Today, it felt like a courtroom.

I sat across from him.

Waiting.

Julian looked older.

Not physically.

Something else.

Like carrying the truth had aged him.

"I didn't hurt Priya."

The first words out of his mouth.

I stared at him.

"That's what you want me to believe?"

"It's the truth."

"Then why did she say that?"

He looked down.

"Because she thinks I failed her."

"Failed her?"

I almost laughed.

"Julian, you hugged her at the airport."

His face tightened.

"Because I thought she was in danger."

"Not because you missed her?"

Silence.

A painful silence.

Then he said:

"I cared about her."

The words still hurt.

Even though I expected them.

"But not the way you think."

I looked away.

"Everyone says that."

"It's true."

"Then explain."

Julian took a deep breath.

"Priya was connected to Marcus."

"How?"

"Marcus had a sister."

I frowned.

"What does that have to do with Priya?"

Julian looked at me.

"Priya is Marcus's younger sister."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

I thought back.

The airport.

The way she said his name.

The way she held onto him.

The grief in her eyes.

She wasn't greeting a lover.

She was greeting someone connected to the person she lost.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I knew what it looked like."

I looked at him.

"Exactly."

He nodded.

"I know."

"And you still lied."

"Yes."

The honesty surprised me.

He didn't defend himself.

Didn't make excuses.

"I was wrong."

I looked at him carefully.

"Why protect her?"

"Because Marcus saved my life."

His voice changed.

"During the final operation, Marcus found out the truth. He tried to get the evidence out."

Julian paused.

"He knew he might not survive."

My chest tightened.

"What happened?"

Julian looked away.

"He gave the evidence to Priya."

"Before he died?"

"Yes."

"Then why did you say he was dead?"

"Because officially, he was."

The answer confused me.

"Officially?"

Julian leaned forward.

"Marcus wasn't killed during the mission."

A chill went through me.

"What are you saying?"

Julian looked around.

Then lowered his voice.

"I'm saying Marcus's death was staged."

The world seemed to stop.

I stared at him.

"No."

"Elena..."

"No."

My hands trembled.

"You're telling me a dead man sent me a message?"

Julian nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"Then where is he?"

Julian didn't answer.

And I already knew.

The answer was impossible.

"He's alive."

Julian looked at me.

For the first time...

he didn't deny it.

That night, I returned home alone.

I needed space.

I needed to breathe.

I needed to decide whether my husband was a liar...

or a man trapped inside a lie.

But before I could even open the apartment door, I noticed something.

The lock was damaged.

Someone had forced their way inside.

My heart started racing.

I slowly stepped in.

The apartment was destroyed.

Drawers pulled open.

Documents everywhere.

Someone had searched everything.

Not stolen.

Searched.

They weren't looking for money.

They were looking for something.

Something Julian had hidden.

Something Marcus had left behind.

Then I saw it.

On the wall.

Written in black ink.

A message.

Three words.

My blood froze.

Because I recognized the handwriting.

It wasn't from Julian.

It wasn't from Priya.

It wasn't from Daniel.

It was from someone I thought I would never see again.

My father.

The message said:

"TRUST NO ONE."

Underneath it was a date.

A date from six years ago.

The day before my wedding.

I stepped back.

Because suddenly, I understood.

My father knew.

Before I married Julian...

my father knew something was wrong.

And he tried to warn me.

But someone made sure I never received that warning.

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No voice.

Only breathing.

Then a man's voice whispered:

"Elena."

My blood turned cold.

Because I knew that voice.

A voice I hadn't heard in six years.

A voice I thought belonged to a dead man.

"Your husband is lying to you."

I couldn't speak.

The man continued:

"But not about Priya."

A pause.

"He's lying about why he married you."

The call ended.

I stood frozen in the middle of my destroyed home.

Because the biggest question was no longer:

"Did Julian betray me?"

The question was much worse.

May you like

"Was my entire marriage built on a lie?"
