CHAPTER 2 THE FIRST LIE I used to believe the truth was something people gave you. A confession. An apology. A moment of honesty when someone finally decided you deserved to know. I was wrong. The truth is something you take back. Piece by piece. From the places people tried to hide it. And Julian had hidden a lot. The next morning, I woke up before sunrise. Not because I couldn't sleep. Because I had stopped wanting to. For fourteen months, I had spent countless nights staring at the ceiling, wondering if Julian was safe. Wondering if he was eating enough. Wondering if he missed me. I had imagined him looking at the same moon from another country, thinking about coming home to me. Now I knew. Maybe he had been looking at the moon. Maybe he had even missed home. But I wasn't the only person he was dreaming about. I walked into the kitchen and saw the empty coffee cup on the counter. Julian's cup. He had come home late last night. I didn't hear him enter. I didn't hear him leave. The apartment felt like a hotel room shared by two strangers. Then I noticed something. A piece of paper on the counter. My heart stopped. For a second, I thought it was a letter. An explanation. Something from the husband I remembered. But it wasn't. It was a grocery list. Milk. Bread. Coffee. Normal things. Almost insulting. After everything that happened, Julian could still wake up and think about buying groceries. Like our world wasn't falling apart. I grabbed my phone. No new messages. No apology. No explanation. Nothing. Just silence. That silence told me more than words could. Julian wasn't confused. He wasn't desperately trying to fix things. He was waiting. Waiting to see what I knew. Waiting to decide what version of the truth he would tell me. So I did something unexpected. I smiled. Because now I understood the game. And I was done playing by his rules. At 9:15 a.m., Julian finally came home. I heard the key turn. The old Elena would have rushed to the door. She would have hugged him. She would have checked his face for injuries. She would have cried because he was finally home. Instead, I sat at the dining table with two cups of coffee. One for me. One for him. Julian stepped inside. For a moment, he looked exactly like the man I married. The same tired eyes. The same familiar smile. The same voice. "Elena." I looked up. "Julian." The way he said my name used to make me feel safe. Now it sounded like a stranger trying to open a locked door. He put his bag down. "You didn't sleep?" "I did." He looked at me carefully. "No, you didn't." Interesting. He could still read me. After all these years. But apparently he couldn't remember how to protect me. "I wanted to talk about yesterday," he said. I lifted my coffee. "Okay." He sat across from me. His hands were nervous. That was the first thing I noticed. Julian was a soldier. A man who had faced danger. A man who had been trained to stay calm under pressure. But sitting across from his wife? His fingers kept moving. His eyes kept avoiding mine. "Priya is..." He stopped. I waited. This was the moment. The moment where he would decide who he wanted to be. Honest Julian. Or the man who betrayed me. "She's someone I know from overseas." I almost laughed. Almost. Because that sentence was so carefully prepared. Someone I know. Not someone I love. Not someone important. Not someone I've been seeing. Just someone. A tiny word designed to make a huge betrayal disappear. "How long have you known her?" His eyes moved to mine. "Elena..." "How long?" A pause. "About six months." Six months. There it was. The first lie. Because I knew about eight months. Maybe more. But I didn't correct him. Not yet. I leaned back. "Six months?" "Yes." "Interesting." His face changed slightly. "What does that mean?" I looked at him. "Nothing." But it meant everything. Because now I knew. Julian wasn't going to tell me the truth. Not unless he had to. "She was going through a difficult time," he continued. "I helped her." I nodded slowly. "You helped her." "Yes." "And that's why she hugged you like she hadn't seen you in years?" His jaw tightened. "Elena, you're misunderstanding." That sentence. That sentence almost made me angry. Because cheaters always had the same talent. They didn't just hurt you. They made you question whether you had the right to be hurt. "What am I misunderstanding?" He looked away. "I didn't expect her to come to the airport." Another lie. Small. Careful. But still a lie. Because Priya didn't look surprised. She looked like someone waiting for the person she loved. "I need you to trust me," Julian said. The words hit harder than I expected. Trust. A word he was asking me to give after destroying it. I stared at my wedding ring. Then slowly removed it from my finger. Julian noticed. His expression changed. "Elena..." I placed the ring on the table. Not dramatically. Not angrily. Just calmly. Like I was putting down something that had become too heavy. "You want me to trust you." My voice was quiet. "So tell me something, Julian." He swallowed. "What?" I looked directly into his eyes. "Why did Priya know exactly where you would be standing at the airport?" Silence. A long one. The kind that reveals things people try to hide. His face lost color. For the first time since he walked through the door... Julian looked afraid. Not angry. Not defensive. Afraid. And that told me I had asked the right question. "Elena..." "No." I raised my hand. "I don't want excuses." He stared at me. "Then what do you want?" I looked at the man I once thought was my forever. "I want the truth." His phone suddenly rang. Neither of us moved. The screen lit up on the table between us. A name appeared. Priya. Julian reached for it immediately. Too quickly. Like his body reacted before his brain could stop it. I noticed. And so did he. Slowly, he placed the phone face down. "I'll handle this later." I smiled. Because there it was. The proof I needed. Not a confession. Not a message. Not a photograph. A reaction. A husband who cared more about hiding another woman than comforting his wife. "Go ahead," I said. He looked confused. "What?" "Answer it." His eyes widened. "Elena..." "Answer the phone." He didn't. And that silence was louder than anything he could have said. A few seconds later, the phone stopped ringing. Then another notification appeared. This time, I saw the preview. Only six words. But six words were enough. "She knows everything. We need to talk." Julian froze. My heart stopped. Because suddenly I wasn't just investigating an affair. I was uncovering something bigger. Something Julian and Priya were both afraid of. I looked at him. "Who knows everything?" He didn't answer. And for the first time in six years... I saw fear in my husband's eyes. Not fear of losing me. Fear of losing something else. Something much bigger. Something he had been hiding. I picked up my coffee and took a slow sip. Because now I knew. Priya wasn't the only secret in my marriage. She was just the first one I found. And whatever Julian was protecting... was the reason he had been lying to me from the beginning. CHAPTER 13 THE SIGNATURE THAT DESTROYED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 13

THE SIGNATURE THAT DESTROYED EVERYTHING

There are moments when your entire life divides into two parts.

Before.

And after.

Before that moment, I was still searching for answers.

After that moment, I was searching for the truth behind the person who gave me those answers.

Because Julian had finally admitted it.

The one thing I never expected.

The one thing my heart refused to accept.

He signed the order.

The order connected to my family.

The order that caused my father to disappear.

The order my mother warned me about.

I stared at him.

Waiting for him to explain.

Waiting for him to say he was misunderstood.

Waiting for him to tell me there was another side.

But Julian didn't speak.

And somehow, that silence hurt more.

"Say something."

My voice was barely recognizable.

Julian looked down.

"I was nineteen when I joined the military."

I frowned.

"What does that have to do with anything?"

"Everything."

He took a breath.

"I wasn't the person making decisions. I wasn't the person controlling operations."

"Then why is your signature there?"

His eyes closed.

"Because I was ordered."

I laughed.

A broken, empty sound.

"Of course."

He looked at me.

"Elena..."

"No."

I stepped back.

"Don't."

The word came out stronger.

"Not another explanation."

"I need you to hear me."

"I heard enough."

My hand touched the wedding ring still hanging around my neck.

A habit.

A reminder.

A piece of the old me.

"I spent six years believing I married a hero."

I looked at him.

"Now I don't even know if I married a soldier or a weapon."

That sentence hurt him.

I saw it.

But pain wasn't enough.

Not anymore.

Julian sat down.

"I didn't know what the order was connected to."

I stared.

"You signed something without knowing?"

"Yes."

"That makes you innocent?"

"No."

The answer surprised me.

"No."

He looked at me.

"It makes me responsible."

For the first time in days...

I saw honesty.

Not excuses.

Not protection.

Just guilt.

"What happened?"

Julian looked at the floor.

"The order was classified."

"Classified as what?"

"Transfer and surveillance."

My eyebrows tightened.

"Surveillance?"

"Your father."

The room went quiet.

"So you were assigned to watch my father."

"Yes."

"And my mother?"

"Later."

My stomach tightened.

"Later?"

Julian nodded.

"When your father disappeared, the investigation changed."

"How?"

"Because we realized he wasn't the target."

"Then who was?"

Julian looked at me.

"You."

The word felt impossible.

"Me?"

He nodded.

"Someone believed your father had left something with you."

"The key."

"Yes."

I looked at the small metal chip on the table.

"Everyone has been searching for this."

"Yes."

"Why didn't anyone just ask me?"

Julian's expression became painful.

"Because your father made sure you didn't know."

I frowned.

"Why?"

"Because if you knew, someone could force the information out of you."

I looked away.

"So instead everyone lied to me."

Julian didn't deny it.

I picked up the letter from my mother again.

The last line stayed in my mind.

Ask him who signed the order.

My mother knew.

She knew Julian was involved.

She knew he was connected.

But she also wrote:

The man you married is not the enemy.

Why?

Why defend him?

Unless...

Unless there was something bigger.

"Who gave you the order?"

Julian became silent.

I looked at him.

"That is the question, isn't it?"

He didn't answer.

"Julian."

Finally, he said:

"The person who gave me the order was someone above my command."

"Who?"

His hands tightened.

"I can't say."

I stared at him.

"You still can't?"

"It's not about protecting myself."

"Then what?"

"It's about keeping you alive."

I shook my head.

"I am tired of hearing that."

But this time...

he looked angry.

Not at me.

At himself.

"You think I don't hate this?"

The sudden emotion surprised me.

"You think I don't wake up every day remembering what happened?"

His voice cracked.

"Marcus died because we trusted the wrong person."

"My career was destroyed because I followed the wrong person."

"Your family was destroyed because someone used me."

Silence.

Then he whispered:

"And I have spent six years trying to fix something I helped break."

I looked at him.

For the first time, I saw the weight he carried.

But understanding someone wasn't the same as forgiving them.

Not yet.

A sound interrupted us.

A notification.

My phone.

Unknown number.

Again.

I opened it.

One message.

A photograph.

My blood froze.

It was Julian.

Six years ago.

Standing in front of a building.

Handing a document to someone.

The person receiving it...

was my mother.

I looked at Julian.

"What is this?"

His face changed.

"I don't know."

"You don't know?"

"I swear."

The picture showed Julian meeting my mother before our wedding.

Before I even knew he existed.

Another message appeared.

"Ask Julian what your mother begged him to do."

My heart raced.

I looked at him.

"What did my mother ask you to do?"

Julian didn't answer.

And that was the moment I knew.

This was the secret he feared the most.

"Julian."

He closed his eyes.

"She asked me to make sure you never found out the truth."

I froze.

"About what?"

He looked at me.

"About who your real enemy was."

I waited.

"Who?"

Julian's voice dropped.

"Your father."

I stepped back.

"What?"

"Your mother believed your father was involved."

I shook my head.

"No."

"Elena..."

"No."

My entire life was collapsing again.

My mother blamed my father.

My father warned me about Julian.

Julian protected me from my father.

Everyone had a different version.

Everyone claimed they were saving me.

Everyone claimed they knew the truth.

But someone was lying.

Maybe everyone was.

That night, I couldn't sleep.

Too many names.

Too many secrets.

I placed the necklace, the documents, and the letters on the table.

Trying to create a timeline.

My father disappeared.

My mother disappeared.

Julian entered my life.

Marcus died.

Priya appeared.

Richard returned.

Everything connected.

But one thing didn't make sense.

The key.

Why did my father hide it inside my necklace?

Why me?

Then I noticed something.

The metal chip.

It wasn't a key.

It was a storage device.

A tiny light blinked.

It had activated.

My laptop suddenly received a notification.

A file appeared.

No password.

No lock.

Just one folder.

The name:

ELENA'S TRUTH

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was one video.

Recorded six years ago.

By my father.

I pressed play.

His face appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

Afraid.

"Elena..."

My eyes filled with tears.

His voice.

I hadn't heard it in years.

"If you are watching this, then I failed."

He paused.

"But there is something you must know."

He looked directly into the camera.

"The person who destroyed our family..."

A long silence.

Then my father said:

"Was not your mother."

"Was not Julian."

"Was not Richard."

My breathing stopped.

"Elena..."

His expression became terrified.

"The person responsible..."

"has been standing beside you your entire life."

The video ended.

And beneath it...

one final file appeared.

A name.

A name I never expected.

May you like

MAYA HAYES.
