CHAPTER 2 THE FIRST LIE I used to believe the truth was something people gave you. A confession. An apology. A moment of honesty when someone finally decided you deserved to know. I was wrong. The truth is something you take back. Piece by piece. From the places people tried to hide it. And Julian had hidden a lot. The next morning, I woke up before sunrise. Not because I couldn't sleep. Because I had stopped wanting to. For fourteen months, I had spent countless nights staring at the ceiling, wondering if Julian was safe. Wondering if he was eating enough. Wondering if he missed me. I had imagined him looking at the same moon from another country, thinking about coming home to me. Now I knew. Maybe he had been looking at the moon. Maybe he had even missed home. But I wasn't the only person he was dreaming about. I walked into the kitchen and saw the empty coffee cup on the counter. Julian's cup. He had come home late last night. I didn't hear him enter. I didn't hear him leave. The apartment felt like a hotel room shared by two strangers. Then I noticed something. A piece of paper on the counter. My heart stopped. For a second, I thought it was a letter. An explanation. Something from the husband I remembered. But it wasn't. It was a grocery list. Milk. Bread. Coffee. Normal things. Almost insulting. After everything that happened, Julian could still wake up and think about buying groceries. Like our world wasn't falling apart. I grabbed my phone. No new messages. No apology. No explanation. Nothing. Just silence. That silence told me more than words could. Julian wasn't confused. He wasn't desperately trying to fix things. He was waiting. Waiting to see what I knew. Waiting to decide what version of the truth he would tell me. So I did something unexpected. I smiled. Because now I understood the game. And I was done playing by his rules. At 9:15 a.m., Julian finally came home. I heard the key turn. The old Elena would have rushed to the door. She would have hugged him. She would have checked his face for injuries. She would have cried because he was finally home. Instead, I sat at the dining table with two cups of coffee. One for me. One for him. Julian stepped inside. For a moment, he looked exactly like the man I married. The same tired eyes. The same familiar smile. The same voice. "Elena." I looked up. "Julian." The way he said my name used to make me feel safe. Now it sounded like a stranger trying to open a locked door. He put his bag down. "You didn't sleep?" "I did." He looked at me carefully. "No, you didn't." Interesting. He could still read me. After all these years. But apparently he couldn't remember how to protect me. "I wanted to talk about yesterday," he said. I lifted my coffee. "Okay." He sat across from me. His hands were nervous. That was the first thing I noticed. Julian was a soldier. A man who had faced danger. A man who had been trained to stay calm under pressure. But sitting across from his wife? His fingers kept moving. His eyes kept avoiding mine. "Priya is..." He stopped. I waited. This was the moment. The moment where he would decide who he wanted to be. Honest Julian. Or the man who betrayed me. "She's someone I know from overseas." I almost laughed. Almost. Because that sentence was so carefully prepared. Someone I know. Not someone I love. Not someone important. Not someone I've been seeing. Just someone. A tiny word designed to make a huge betrayal disappear. "How long have you known her?" His eyes moved to mine. "Elena..." "How long?" A pause. "About six months." Six months. There it was. The first lie. Because I knew about eight months. Maybe more. But I didn't correct him. Not yet. I leaned back. "Six months?" "Yes." "Interesting." His face changed slightly. "What does that mean?" I looked at him. "Nothing." But it meant everything. Because now I knew. Julian wasn't going to tell me the truth. Not unless he had to. "She was going through a difficult time," he continued. "I helped her." I nodded slowly. "You helped her." "Yes." "And that's why she hugged you like she hadn't seen you in years?" His jaw tightened. "Elena, you're misunderstanding." That sentence. That sentence almost made me angry. Because cheaters always had the same talent. They didn't just hurt you. They made you question whether you had the right to be hurt. "What am I misunderstanding?" He looked away. "I didn't expect her to come to the airport." Another lie. Small. Careful. But still a lie. Because Priya didn't look surprised. She looked like someone waiting for the person she loved. "I need you to trust me," Julian said. The words hit harder than I expected. Trust. A word he was asking me to give after destroying it. I stared at my wedding ring. Then slowly removed it from my finger. Julian noticed. His expression changed. "Elena..." I placed the ring on the table. Not dramatically. Not angrily. Just calmly. Like I was putting down something that had become too heavy. "You want me to trust you." My voice was quiet. "So tell me something, Julian." He swallowed. "What?" I looked directly into his eyes. "Why did Priya know exactly where you would be standing at the airport?" Silence. A long one. The kind that reveals things people try to hide. His face lost color. For the first time since he walked through the door... Julian looked afraid. Not angry. Not defensive. Afraid. And that told me I had asked the right question. "Elena..." "No." I raised my hand. "I don't want excuses." He stared at me. "Then what do you want?" I looked at the man I once thought was my forever. "I want the truth." His phone suddenly rang. Neither of us moved. The screen lit up on the table between us. A name appeared. Priya. Julian reached for it immediately. Too quickly. Like his body reacted before his brain could stop it. I noticed. And so did he. Slowly, he placed the phone face down. "I'll handle this later." I smiled. Because there it was. The proof I needed. Not a confession. Not a message. Not a photograph. A reaction. A husband who cared more about hiding another woman than comforting his wife. "Go ahead," I said. He looked confused. "What?" "Answer it." His eyes widened. "Elena..." "Answer the phone." He didn't. And that silence was louder than anything he could have said. A few seconds later, the phone stopped ringing. Then another notification appeared. This time, I saw the preview. Only six words. But six words were enough. "She knows everything. We need to talk." Julian froze. My heart stopped. Because suddenly I wasn't just investigating an affair. I was uncovering something bigger. Something Julian and Priya were both afraid of. I looked at him. "Who knows everything?" He didn't answer. And for the first time in six years... I saw fear in my husband's eyes. Not fear of losing me. Fear of losing something else. Something much bigger. Something he had been hiding. I picked up my coffee and took a slow sip. Because now I knew. Priya wasn't the only secret in my marriage. She was just the first one I found. And whatever Julian was protecting... was the reason he had been lying to me from the beginning. CHAPTER 15 THE LAST PERSON I TRUSTED

CHAPTER 15

THE LAST PERSON I TRUSTED

The first thing I felt was silence.

Not fear.

Not panic.

Silence.

The kind of silence that comes after something irreversible happens.

I was lying on the floor of my childhood home, staring at the ceiling.

The lights had returned.

The room looked exactly the same.

The old furniture.

The dusty shelves.

The family photographs.

But nothing was the same anymore.

Because Maya was gone.

And the person I trusted most had just admitted she was connected to everything.

I slowly sat up.

My hands were shaking.

Not because of the gunshot.

Because of the note.

The note lying beside me.

Three words.

Written in my father's handwriting.

SHE KNOWS EVERYTHING.

I picked it up carefully.

My father's handwriting.

Again.

Always my father's handwriting.

Even after years of searching for him...

his words kept finding me.

But this time, I didn't know if they were saving me...

or leading me deeper into the nightmare.

I called Julian.

He answered immediately.

"Elena?"

His voice was different.

Like he already knew something happened.

"Maya was here."

Silence.

Then:

"Where are you?"

"My father's house."

"Leave."

I closed my eyes.

"Not again."

"Elena, listen to me."

"No."

My voice became harder.

"I am done running every time someone tells me to."

"Someone tried to hurt you."

"And someone has been lying to me for six years."

A pause.

Then Julian said quietly:

"I know."

Those two words stopped me.

Because there was no defense.

No argument.

Just acceptance.

"Come here."

"Why?"

"Because I need to tell you everything."

I looked around the room.

At the place where my childhood disappeared.

"Everything?"

"Everything."

Julian arrived twenty minutes later.

The moment he saw my face, he knew.

Something had changed.

"What happened?"

I handed him the note.

He read it.

And immediately froze.

"You know this handwriting?"

I watched him carefully.

"Yes."

His expression changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

"You've seen this before."

Julian didn't answer.

"Julian."

He looked away.

"I have."

My chest tightened.

"Where?"

He hesitated.

Then:

"On the night your father disappeared."

The room became silent.

I felt my heartbeat.

"The night he disappeared?"

Julian nodded.

"I was there."

The words hit harder than anything before.

"You were there?"

"Yes."

I stepped back.

"Then tell me."

He looked at me.

"Tell me what happened."

Julian sat down.

And for the first time...

he stopped protecting the past.

"Six years ago, your father contacted me."

I listened.

"He knew someone inside the operation was trying to take the information he discovered."

"The key."

"Yes."

"He didn't trust the military. He didn't trust his colleagues."

"Why did he trust you?"

Julian looked down.

"Because he knew I was already in love with you."

I said nothing.

"He knew my feelings weren't part of the assignment anymore."

I swallowed.

"Then what happened?"

Julian took a deep breath.

"Your father asked me to do something."

"What?"

"Watch over you."

I almost laughed.

"Again."

But Julian continued.

"He knew if something happened to him, everyone would look for the key."

"Everyone?"

"Everyone involved."

"Who?"

Julian looked at me.

"The people who wanted the information destroyed."

I waited.

"Your father didn't want you knowing because he believed the closer you got to the truth..."

He paused.

"The more danger you were in."

I looked at the note.

"SHE KNOWS EVERYTHING."

"Who is she?"

Julian was quiet.

Then he said:

"Your mother."

My breathing stopped.

Again.

My mother.

The woman who disappeared.

The woman everyone kept connecting to the truth.

"But Richard said she was gone."

"Richard lied."

"Maya said my father knew."

"Your father did know."

"Then why didn't he tell me?"

Julian looked at me.

"Because he found out something about your mother."

"What?"

Julian hesitated.

"The person everyone thought your mother was protecting..."

"wasn't you."

I frowned.

"Who was she protecting?"

Julian looked at me.

"You."

I stood up.

"I don't understand."

Julian looked exhausted.

"Elena, your mother discovered something before your father did."

"What?"

"That you weren't just connected to the investigation."

The room felt colder.

"You were the reason it started."

I stared.

"No."

"Listen."

"No."

My voice shook.

"That doesn't make sense."

Julian stood.

"Your father and mother were not ordinary people."

"They were researchers."

"They discovered something."

"Something dangerous."

"What?"

Julian looked at me.

"A program."

"What kind of program?"

"A program designed to predict human behavior."

I frowned.

"That's impossible."

"Your parents helped create the early version."

My heart sank.

"Why would they?"

"Because they thought it could save lives."

"And then?"

Julian's voice became darker.

"Then someone realized it could control people."

Silence.

"Your mother wanted to destroy it."

"Your father wanted evidence."

"And you?"

Julian looked at me.

"I was sent to find it."

I felt dizzy.

"Where is it?"

Julian didn't answer.

I already knew.

"The key."

He nodded.

"The key contains everything."

Suddenly, my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

I looked at Julian.

He immediately became alert.

"Don't answer."

But I did.

No voice.

Only a recording.

My mother's voice.

A voice I hadn't heard in years.

"Elena."

My entire body froze.

"If you are hearing this, then they failed to keep you away."

I couldn't breathe.

Her voice continued.

"I know you have questions."

A pause.

"But there is one thing you must understand."

The recording became quieter.

"Julian did not betray you."

I looked at him.

Then the next sentence came.

"He betrayed me."

My eyes widened.

Julian's face changed.

Because he knew what was coming.

My mother's voice continued:

"He made a choice six years ago."

"A choice that saved Elena..."

"But destroyed me."

The recording stopped.

A final message appeared on the screen.

A location.

No explanation.

No name.

Just coordinates.

Julian looked at the phone.

Then at me.

"What is it?"

I showed him.

His face went pale.

"Where is this?"

I looked at him.

"You know."

He didn't answer.

Because he did.

Finally, he whispered:

"It's where your mother disappeared."

I stared at the location.

The place where the final truth was waiting.

The place where my family was destroyed.

The place where Julian made the choice that changed everything.

I picked up my jacket.

Julian looked at me.

"Elena..."

I stopped him.

"No more secrets."

He nodded.

"No more."

We walked toward the door.

But before leaving...

I looked back at the house.

The place where my story began.

The place where every lie was born.

Because tomorrow...

I would finally meet the person who had been missing from my life for years.

My mother.

And I would finally learn the truth.

Not about Julian.

Not about Priya.

Not about Maya.

About myself.

Because maybe the biggest secret...

was never the people who betrayed me.

May you like

Maybe it was the reason they all did.
