CHAPTER 12 THE WOMAN WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO RETURN

CHAPTER 12
THE WOMAN WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO RETURN
Some names have power.
Not because they are dangerous.
Because they carry memories.
For me, that name was my mother.
A woman who disappeared from my life when I was twelve years old.
A woman I spent years trying to understand.
A woman everyone told me not to talk about.
And now Richard was standing in my apartment...
telling me she was connected to everything.
My marriage.
My father's disappearance.
Julian's mission.
Marcus's death.
I stared at my uncle.
Waiting for him to laugh.
Waiting for him to admit this was some cruel joke.
He didn't.
"You expect me to believe that?"
Richard's expression remained calm.
"Believe whatever you want."
He looked around my apartment.
"But you already know something is wrong."
I hated that he was right.
Because deep inside...
I did.
Too many people had secrets.
Too many pieces connected.
And every path kept leading back to my family.
"Where is my mother?"
The question came out before I could stop it.
Richard's expression changed.
A small movement.
But I saw it.
"You really don't know."
"Know what?"
He looked at me.
"Your mother didn't leave."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
"She disappeared."
I shook my head.
"No."
My voice became quieter.
"Everyone told me she left."
"Everyone lied."
The room suddenly felt freezing.
Because if that was true...
my entire childhood had been built on a false story.
"Why would everyone lie to me?"
Richard didn't answer.
Instead, he walked toward the table.
He picked up the photograph of Julian, my father, and Maya.
"You've been searching for the wrong enemy."
I looked at him.
"What does that mean?"
"It means your father spent years trying to uncover the truth."
"About my mother?"
Richard nodded.
"About what she became."
I felt sick.
"What she became?"
He looked at me.
"Your mother wasn't the woman you remember."
I hated him for saying that.
Because I remembered her.
Her voice.
Her perfume.
The way she sang while cooking.
The way she held my hand when I was afraid.
"You don't know her."
Richard smiled sadly.
"I knew her better than anyone."
The sentence disturbed me.
"What are you saying?"
Before he could answer...
my phone rang.
Julian.
I looked at Richard.
He immediately stepped back.
"Don't tell him I'm here."
"Why?"
"Because if Julian knows I spoke to you..."
He paused.
"He will come looking for answers."
"Isn't that what we all want?"
Richard looked at me.
"No."
His voice became serious.
"Some answers destroy everything."
Then he walked toward the exit.
"Wait."
He stopped.
"Where is my father?"
Richard looked back.
For a moment, he almost looked sorry.
Then he said:
"Ask Julian."
And he left.
I answered Julian's call.
"Where are you?"
His voice sounded worried.
"Home."
A pause.
"Are you alone?"
I looked around the apartment.
At the place where Richard had been standing seconds ago.
"Yes."
A lie.
My first lie to him.
And somehow...
that hurt.
"Elena, we need to talk."
"I know."
"Not over the phone."
"Why?"
Silence.
Then Julian said:
"Because there are things I should have told you years ago."
I closed my eyes.
Years ago.
Everyone kept using those words.
Years ago.
As if six years of my life had been a chapter they could rewrite.
"Come over."
When Julian arrived, he immediately noticed something.
"You saw someone."
I looked at him.
"How do you know?"
"Because you're standing like you're waiting for someone to attack."
I almost smiled.
Even after everything...
he still knew me.
"Richard was here."
The moment I said his name, Julian froze.
Not surprised.
Afraid.
"You need to leave."
I stared at him.
"What?"
"Now."
"No."
"Elena."
"Stop."
My voice became sharp.
"Stop telling me what to do."
He went silent.
Good.
I needed him to listen.
"Richard said my mother didn't leave."
Julian's face changed.
Slowly.
Painfully.
Like a wound reopening.
"Julian."
He sat down.
"Your mother was involved."
I stared at him.
"With what?"
"The operation."
My chest tightened.
"Explain."
Julian looked exhausted.
"When I was assigned to investigate your father, I discovered something."
"What?"
"Your father wasn't the first person trying to expose the conspiracy."
"Who was?"
Julian looked at me.
"Your mother."
I couldn't breathe.
"She knew before him."
"Yes."
"Then why did she disappear?"
Julian was quiet.
Finally:
"Because she found out who was behind everything."
"Who?"
He looked away.
"She never told anyone."
"Why?"
"Because she didn't trust anyone."
I laughed bitterly.
"Smart woman."
Julian looked at me.
"Elena."
"No."
I stood.
"Everyone around me knew."
"My father."
"My mother."
"You."
"Maya."
"Richard."
I pointed toward him.
"Everyone knew something except me."
His face showed pain.
"I was trying to protect you."
I shook my head.
"That's not protection."
"What is it?"
"Control."
The word hurt him.
But I needed to say it.
"You all decided what I could handle."
Julian didn't argue.
Because he knew.
Then he reached into his jacket.
And placed something on the table.
A small box.
I stared at it.
"What is that?"
"Something your mother left."
My heart stopped.
"You had this?"
"Yes."
"For how long?"
He looked down.
"Six years."
Another secret.
Another wound.
I opened the box.
Inside was a letter.
My name was written on the front.
For Elena.
My hands shook.
Because this was the first thing from my mother I had seen in years.
I opened it.
The letter was short.
But the words destroyed me.
"Elena,
If you are reading this, it means they failed to keep you away from the truth.
I need you to know something.
The man you married is not the enemy.
But he is not innocent either.
Julian knows why I disappeared.
He knows what happened to your father.
And he knows the name of the person who destroyed our family.
Ask him one question:
Who signed the order?"
I looked up.
Julian was pale.
Because he knew exactly what that meant.
"What order?"
He didn't answer.
"Julian."
His eyes met mine.
And finally...
after six years of silence...
he said the name.
"The order that erased your family."
A pause.
"The order was signed by..."
He stopped.
Like saying the name out loud would make it real.
"Who?"
Julian whispered:
"Me."
The room went silent.
My heart stopped.
Because the man I loved had just confessed something impossible.
My husband wasn't just connected to my family's tragedy.
May you like
He was the person who signed the document that started it.
