CHAPTER 2 THE FIRST LIE I used to believe the truth was something people gave you. A confession. An apology. A moment of honesty when someone finally decided you deserved to know. I was wrong. The truth is something you take back. Piece by piece. From the places people tried to hide it. And Julian had hidden a lot. The next morning, I woke up before sunrise. Not because I couldn't sleep. Because I had stopped wanting to. For fourteen months, I had spent countless nights staring at the ceiling, wondering if Julian was safe. Wondering if he was eating enough. Wondering if he missed me. I had imagined him looking at the same moon from another country, thinking about coming home to me. Now I knew. Maybe he had been looking at the moon. Maybe he had even missed home. But I wasn't the only person he was dreaming about. I walked into the kitchen and saw the empty coffee cup on the counter. Julian's cup. He had come home late last night. I didn't hear him enter. I didn't hear him leave. The apartment felt like a hotel room shared by two strangers. Then I noticed something. A piece of paper on the counter. My heart stopped. For a second, I thought it was a letter. An explanation. Something from the husband I remembered. But it wasn't. It was a grocery list. Milk. Bread. Coffee. Normal things. Almost insulting. After everything that happened, Julian could still wake up and think about buying groceries. Like our world wasn't falling apart. I grabbed my phone. No new messages. No apology. No explanation. Nothing. Just silence. That silence told me more than words could. Julian wasn't confused. He wasn't desperately trying to fix things. He was waiting. Waiting to see what I knew. Waiting to decide what version of the truth he would tell me. So I did something unexpected. I smiled. Because now I understood the game. And I was done playing by his rules. At 9:15 a.m., Julian finally came home. I heard the key turn. The old Elena would have rushed to the door. She would have hugged him. She would have checked his face for injuries. She would have cried because he was finally home. Instead, I sat at the dining table with two cups of coffee. One for me. One for him. Julian stepped inside. For a moment, he looked exactly like the man I married. The same tired eyes. The same familiar smile. The same voice. "Elena." I looked up. "Julian." The way he said my name used to make me feel safe. Now it sounded like a stranger trying to open a locked door. He put his bag down. "You didn't sleep?" "I did." He looked at me carefully. "No, you didn't." Interesting. He could still read me. After all these years. But apparently he couldn't remember how to protect me. "I wanted to talk about yesterday," he said. I lifted my coffee. "Okay." He sat across from me. His hands were nervous. That was the first thing I noticed. Julian was a soldier. A man who had faced danger. A man who had been trained to stay calm under pressure. But sitting across from his wife? His fingers kept moving. His eyes kept avoiding mine. "Priya is..." He stopped. I waited. This was the moment. The moment where he would decide who he wanted to be. Honest Julian. Or the man who betrayed me. "She's someone I know from overseas." I almost laughed. Almost. Because that sentence was so carefully prepared. Someone I know. Not someone I love. Not someone important. Not someone I've been seeing. Just someone. A tiny word designed to make a huge betrayal disappear. "How long have you known her?" His eyes moved to mine. "Elena..." "How long?" A pause. "About six months." Six months. There it was. The first lie. Because I knew about eight months. Maybe more. But I didn't correct him. Not yet. I leaned back. "Six months?" "Yes." "Interesting." His face changed slightly. "What does that mean?" I looked at him. "Nothing." But it meant everything. Because now I knew. Julian wasn't going to tell me the truth. Not unless he had to. "She was going through a difficult time," he continued. "I helped her." I nodded slowly. "You helped her." "Yes." "And that's why she hugged you like she hadn't seen you in years?" His jaw tightened. "Elena, you're misunderstanding." That sentence. That sentence almost made me angry. Because cheaters always had the same talent. They didn't just hurt you. They made you question whether you had the right to be hurt. "What am I misunderstanding?" He looked away. "I didn't expect her to come to the airport." Another lie. Small. Careful. But still a lie. Because Priya didn't look surprised. She looked like someone waiting for the person she loved. "I need you to trust me," Julian said. The words hit harder than I expected. Trust. A word he was asking me to give after destroying it. I stared at my wedding ring. Then slowly removed it from my finger. Julian noticed. His expression changed. "Elena..." I placed the ring on the table. Not dramatically. Not angrily. Just calmly. Like I was putting down something that had become too heavy. "You want me to trust you." My voice was quiet. "So tell me something, Julian." He swallowed. "What?" I looked directly into his eyes. "Why did Priya know exactly where you would be standing at the airport?" Silence. A long one. The kind that reveals things people try to hide. His face lost color. For the first time since he walked through the door... Julian looked afraid. Not angry. Not defensive. Afraid. And that told me I had asked the right question. "Elena..." "No." I raised my hand. "I don't want excuses." He stared at me. "Then what do you want?" I looked at the man I once thought was my forever. "I want the truth." His phone suddenly rang. Neither of us moved. The screen lit up on the table between us. A name appeared. Priya. Julian reached for it immediately. Too quickly. Like his body reacted before his brain could stop it. I noticed. And so did he. Slowly, he placed the phone face down. "I'll handle this later." I smiled. Because there it was. The proof I needed. Not a confession. Not a message. Not a photograph. A reaction. A husband who cared more about hiding another woman than comforting his wife. "Go ahead," I said. He looked confused. "What?" "Answer it." His eyes widened. "Elena..." "Answer the phone." He didn't. And that silence was louder than anything he could have said. A few seconds later, the phone stopped ringing. Then another notification appeared. This time, I saw the preview. Only six words. But six words were enough. "She knows everything. We need to talk." Julian froze. My heart stopped. Because suddenly I wasn't just investigating an affair. I was uncovering something bigger. Something Julian and Priya were both afraid of. I looked at him. "Who knows everything?" He didn't answer. And for the first time in six years... I saw fear in my husband's eyes. Not fear of losing me. Fear of losing something else. Something much bigger. Something he had been hiding. I picked up my coffee and took a slow sip. Because now I knew. Priya wasn't the only secret in my marriage. She was just the first one I found. And whatever Julian was protecting... was the reason he had been lying to me from the beginning. CHAPTER 14 THE FRIEND WHO STOOD BESIDE ME

CHAPTER 14

THE FRIEND WHO STOOD BESIDE ME

I watched the file name for almost a minute.

I didn't open it.

Not because I was afraid of what was inside.

Because I already knew.

Somewhere deep down, I knew.

The hardest truths are not the ones that surprise you.

They are the ones you secretly feared were possible.

MAYA HAYES.

My best friend.

The person who sat beside me when I cried.

The person who held my hand when Julian left for deployment.

The person who told me I deserved honesty.

The person who helped me search for the truth.

The person who might have been hiding it all along.

My laptop screen reflected my face.

I barely recognized myself.

The woman who entered the airport holding sunflowers was gone.

She believed love could survive anything.

She believed loyalty was something people earned by giving it.

She believed the people closest to her would never hurt her.

That woman was gone.

Now I questioned everything.

Every memory.

Every conversation.

Every "I'm here for you."

I moved the cursor toward the file.

Then stopped.

Because opening it meant accepting the possibility.

Accepting that Maya had betrayed me.

Accepting that my entire life was surrounded by people wearing masks.

Before I could click...

my phone rang.

Julian.

I almost ignored it.

Almost.

But after everything, there was one thing I knew.

Julian lied.

But he also told me things that nobody else wanted me to know.

I answered.

"Where are you?"

His voice was tense.

"At home."

"Are you alone?"

I looked at the laptop.

At Maya's name.

"Yes."

A pause.

"Elena."

"What?"

"Leave the apartment."

My body stiffened.

"Why?"

"Because someone accessed the file."

I looked at my screen.

"What file?"

Another pause.

The kind of pause that told me he already knew.

"The one your father left."

My heart started racing.

"How do you know?"

"Because I created the security system around it."

I stared at the computer.

"Julian..."

"Listen to me."

His voice became urgent.

"If someone opened that file, they know you found it."

"Who?"

Silence.

Then:

"I don't know."

A cold feeling moved through me.

The same words again.

But this time...

I believed him.

Because Julian sounded scared.

Not guilty.

Scared.

I grabbed the laptop and left.

I didn't know where I was going.

I just knew I couldn't stay there.

The city moved around me.

People walking.

Cars passing.

Everyone living normal lives.

Nobody knew my entire reality had collapsed.

I drove to the one place I felt connected to my old life.

My childhood home.

The house where my father raised me.

The house where my mother disappeared.

The house where all these secrets began.

The property had been empty for years.

But when I arrived...

the front door was open.

My heart immediately tightened.

Not again.

Another person entering.

Another secret waiting.

I stepped inside slowly.

The house smelled exactly the same.

Old wood.

Dust.

Memories.

I walked through the hallway.

Family photos still hung on the walls.

Me as a child.

My parents smiling.

A happy family.

A lie?

Or just a moment before everything broke?

Then I heard something.

A sound upstairs.

Footsteps.

I froze.

"Who's there?"

No answer.

I reached for my phone.

Then a voice spoke.

"Elena."

I stopped breathing.

Because I knew that voice.

"Maya?"

She stepped out from the hallway.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were full of tears.

"What are you doing here?"

The question sounded stupid.

Because both of us knew.

The real question was:

Why was she here before me?

Maya looked at the laptop in my hand.

"You opened it."

I stared.

"How do you know about the file?"

She closed her eyes.

And that was enough.

I felt something inside me break.

"You knew."

"Elena..."

"You knew."

Her tears fell.

"Yes."

I stepped back.

"How long?"

She didn't answer.

"How long have you known?"

"Since before Julian."

That sentence hit harder than anything.

Before Julian.

Before my marriage.

Before my entire adult life.

"You were always there."

She nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

Maya looked around the old house.

"Because your father asked me."

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone uses my father as an excuse."

"He wasn't an excuse."

"Then what was he?"

Maya looked at me.

"A man who knew he was running out of time."

The anger inside me weakened.

Only slightly.

"What did you do?"

Maya looked down.

"I protected you."

I shook my head.

"No."

My voice became colder.

"You watched me."

Silence.

"You watched me fall in love with Julian."

"Yes."

"You watched me marry him."

"Yes."

"You watched me build a life based on a lie."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I was trying to keep you alive."

I stared at her.

"By letting me live a fake life?"

She had no answer.

"Open the file."

Maya looked at the laptop.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because once you know, there is no going back."

I smiled sadly.

"Maya."

I held up the computer.

"My entire life has already changed."

She looked at me.

"Please."

That word surprised me.

Maya was never afraid.

But now?

She looked terrified.

"What is inside?"

She whispered:

"The truth about your mother."

I froze.

"Not my father?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"Then why did my father say your name?"

Maya looked away.

"Because he knew I was the only person who could stop you from finding out."

"Stop me?"

She nodded.

"Or prepare you."

I opened the file.

A video appeared.

The date.

Six years ago.

The day before my wedding.

I pressed play.

My father appeared again.

But this time...

he wasn't alone.

Maya was sitting beside him.

My heart stopped.

My father looked into the camera.

"Maya knows everything."

A pause.

"If Elena sees this, it means we failed."

I looked at Maya.

She was crying silently.

The video continued.

My father's voice became weaker.

"Maya, I need you to promise me something."

Young Maya on the screen nodded.

"Protect Elena."

My father looked directly at the camera.

"Because the person who destroyed our family..."

He paused.

"Is someone Elena loves."

I held my breath.

Then my father said:

"Someone she trusts more than anyone."

The screen went black.

The video ended.

But a new file appeared.

A final document.

A confession.

Signed by:

Maya Hayes.

I looked at my best friend.

My hands were shaking.

"What did you do?"

Maya couldn't look at me.

And then she said the words that changed everything.

"I was the one who gave Julian the order."

I couldn't speak.

The person who comforted me.

The person who protected me.

The person who claimed she was saving me...

was the person controlling the entire operation.

"You?"

Maya nodded.

"But I didn't know what would happen."

I laughed quietly.

"That doesn't make it better."

"I know."

"Why?"

Her face broke.

"Because your father asked me to."

I froze.

"What?"

Maya looked at me.

"Your father didn't trust anyone else."

"Why you?"

"Because I was the only person who loved you enough to make the hardest choice."

I stared.

"I don't understand."

Maya whispered:

"Elena..."

"Your father wasn't trying to protect you from Julian."

"He was trying to protect you from yourself."

My blood ran cold.

"What does that mean?"

Before she could answer...

the lights went out.

Again.

Darkness.

Then a sound.

A gunshot.

Maya screamed.

I fell to the floor.

And when the lights returned...

Maya was gone.

But on the ground beside me...

was a note.

Written in my father's handwriting.

Three words:

May you like

"SHE KNOWS EVERYTHING."
