CHAPTER 4 – THE HALF OF BREAD

CHAPTER 4 – THE HALF OF BREAD

Daniel shoved Emma behind him as the SUV mounted the curb.

Police sirens erupted from every direction.

Three unmarked police vehicles blocked the intersection.

Armed officers surrounded the SUV before it could escape.

The driver never reached the door.

Weeks later...

The investigation shook the country.

Executives were arrested.

Billions in stolen assets were recovered.

The forged evidence against Daniel was erased.

His reputation was restored.

But none of that was what people remembered.

News cameras waited outside the courthouse as Daniel walked down the steps beside Claire and Emma.

A reporter shouted,

"Mr. Carter! After everything you've regained... what's the most valuable thing you own now?"

Daniel looked at his daughter.

Emma was eating another piece of bread.

She broke it in half.

Just as she had done on that rainy afternoon.

She handed him one piece.

"You can have half."

Daniel smiled through tears.

"This."

He held up the small piece of bread.

"Because when I had nothing left—not my company, not my name, not even hope—a little girl who believed she was poor reminded me what real wealth looks like."

Emma slipped her tiny hand into his.

The silver charm caught the afternoon sunlight.

This time...

Daniel wasn't recognizing the past.

He was finally holding on to his future.
