CHAPTER 3 – THE LIE
CHAPTER 3 – THE LIE
Claire refused to get into Daniel's car.
"We can't stay here," he pleaded.
"You don't understand."
"I understand perfectly," she replied.
"They're still looking for us."
Daniel frowned.
"Who?"
Claire slowly rolled up the sleeve of her sweater.
A faded scar crossed her forearm.
"You remember the investment company you trusted?"
His stomach tightened.
The company that had bankrupted him.
The scandal that had destroyed his career.
The reason he had believed he had lost everything.
"It wasn't an accident," Claire said.
"They framed you."
Daniel stared at her.
"What?"
"The board needed someone to blame after they stole billions."
"They forged your signature."
"They paid witnesses."
"And when I found proof..."
Her voice broke.
"They tried to make Emma disappear."
Daniel felt physically sick.
"I searched for both of you."
"They told me you died."
Claire nodded slowly.
"They wanted you to believe that."
She opened Emma's backpack.
Hidden beneath the schoolbooks was a weathered flash drive.
"I've spent seven years protecting this."
Daniel reached for it.
Just then...
A gunshot shattered the silence.
Glass exploded behind them.
People screamed.
The black SUV accelerated straight toward the sidewalk.
